The walled town of Dubrovnik...

The conker really ‘pops out’ of the screen. I used to love collecting them as a kid. We’d drill holes in them, put string through, and play ‘conkers’ in the playground for a few weeks every autumn. But the best moment of all was prising a brand-new conker out of its spiky shell. It was glossy, and that beautiful colour... but only for a few brief hours, before the gloss faded. It taught me a valuable lesson about life: good things don’t last... ;)

A couple of really crazy skies! I haven't seen anything like those in a long time.

Thanks to a tip of Keleko in a sister thread (thanks!) I bought the Nik software plugins for Aperture with a nice rebate yesterday. I am mainly interested in the B&W conversion tool, so here we go with a pic I took yesterday.

Very good use of B&W. I really like the general area where the figure is placed, though it's a pity he didn't step out from behind the pole for you. The lines of the tracks are very striking and give the photo a great sense of depth.

It's interesting to see the different body language of each person. Good timing!

Nice warm colors and interesting textures in this one.

The walled town of Dubrovnik...

One of my favorite places to visit on the Adriatic. I've seen a lot of photos from this vantage point, but I have no idea where it is; I've never been up that high. I really like the placement of the boats and their wakes in this one.

Last night I processed this one from the Henry Ford Museum visit last week. I don't usually go for a completely different look from reality (not counting converting to B&W), but when I was playing around with different effects in Topaz Adjust, this immediately jumped out at me as the right look for this shot.

Love the color effects and the whole picture for that matter!

When I took yesterday morning's sunrise photo of the dramatic red sky my old Navy days flashed in my brain-"red sky at night, sailor's delight; red sky in morning, sailor take warning." We're due for some serious weather with snow and high winds out here in the Rockies today through tomorrow!

It is a lovely place - I really had no idea! That photo was taken at the top of the mountain overlooking town which has become accessible by a gondola (I think this is a fairly recent development).

Here's a rather different perspective...

Conkers.

You might be interested to know that the game "conkers" made its way across the Atlantic Ocean to my home province, Newfoundland and Labrador. As schoolboys, we too would gather the nuts, dry them, put holes through them and then dangle the nut in midair as an opponent tried their best to crack or break your own nut. (the one on the string, not your head) It was also hoped that the chestnuts on Newfoundland island were of the "American Chestnut", a valued and oh so common species lost to a blight many years ago. Alas, our nut were the humble "horse" chestnut - great for decorative street cover and conkers, lousy for eating and no use for the lumber.

Nice photo by the by Lumberman. See how a single photo can evoke so many memories.

Stupid question

I understand the one photo post per day, but I was wondering if the photo has to be taken that day or can it be from any other day? Thanks.

Thanks everyone! It was a snapshot taken while I was exploring a park near my home and I wasn't expecting such a reaction from it. Your kind words are very encouraging!

So, this is one from my walk through Butte a little over a month ago, it is my first portrait of a stranger. The guy saw me walking up the street taking photos and came out to greet me. After exchanging greetings I asked if I could take his picture and his response was, "You'd better do it before I die!"
