1859 Stationary Steam Engine

This kind of steam engine made possible the growth of massive steam-powered factories. Designed by George Corliss, it had a complicated valve that made it run more smoothly and efficiently than other engines. Its power was great enough to drive many machines; its efficiency saved fuel. Its uniform speed was necessary for precise machinery, like textile looms.

More limestone rock formations off the coast of Marseille, France...

How I wish I was there! That light is just magical. :)

BarryJ: Very nice shot of the library foyer.

I've been digging through my lot of photos and adding more to my site. Here is a Cathay Pacific A330 Airbus at 27mm:

(click to enlarge, and for exif details).

That thing was low. Hope to do the same this afternoon with their brand spanking new B747-8F "Hong Kong Trader" when I go to have a look at it.

Oversize Load

This is one of the last of MANY oversize loads that were hauled from Lewiston, ID to a town about 300 miles into Canada north of western Montana, this shot is in Missoula(Bonner). It is for a Weyerhaeuser plant being built. This particular load weighs in at around 550,000lbs, complete with the pusher truck. The object being moved is an evaporator that weighs about 340,000lbs.

The trucking company doing the work specializes in moving houses by land and water, this is their first entry into industrial equipment. They had to buy some used equipment, the trailer here was used and was heavily modified for this project. Some equipment they had to build from scratch.

The company is being paid about $7m for the project and only expects to break even on it due to the equipment costs, however they will be prepared to do more industrial work later, and turn a profit on it. Weyerhaeuser picked up the bill for the utility companies to move power lines, and for permits and pilot cars/security. Somehow this was still cheaper than building it on site.

Temple Beth El in Bloomfield Hills, MI. Every time I visit my in-laws, we drive past this several times. I've wanted to take a picture of it at night with it all lit up, and Friday night I finally took the time to do it. I think the deep blue of the twilight sky really sets it off well.

I wish I could have set up further back to reduce the wide angle distortion, but to do so would mean crossing a very busy 6 lane road and trying to time the long exposure between all the traffic. I'm also hampered by power lines immediately above me that would get in the shot if I was further back. So I'll just live with the wide angle version.

I think a lot of serious photographers avoid this lake because of its limitations, despite its fame and beauty. To begin with, it is forbidden to approach its shores, as a perimeter of wooden barriers plastered with signs makes clear in no uncertain terms. Therefore, you're stuck back in the trees and can either shoot through them or else choose one of three openings that provide a clear shot of the lake.

Then there's the matter of light versus water volume. When the water level is low, some of the beautiful yellow lake bottom and lots of boulders are revealed (as you see here). The time of year when the water is low, however, is also when the sun is setting further south; so to get the mountains in the shot, you either have to shoot right into a high sun or else shoot when the sun is down. In the summer the water in the lake rises all the way up to the trees, which makes the lake look less interesting. Ah well, "fools rush in where angels fear to tread"...

I am constantly amazed by the beauty of your images. Brilliant.

I think I've got some old toy petrol pumps from the 70s that look just like that. I still think they're kinda cool.

We were feeding the ducks and swans on the Thames at Windsor and these critters came flying past. It's a nightmare to get a decent picture of them.

Winter Silhouette

I took a walk along part of the Antonine wall today, as it had stopped raining, and the sun was out. Despite it being nearly midday, the winter sun this far north hangs low in the sky, and there were some wonderful silhouettes to be seen. Along the brow of the hill, along with an old stone wall were trees which looked as though they had withstood strong winds for many years.

This is the sight that met my eyes when I woke up early deep in the Kenyan scrub..I can't remember the gear, think it was a canon dos 400d with a 70-200 f4 L lens

Such an intricate tree silhouette and set in some wonderful atmosphere. Lovely sunrise.

From the Henry Ford Museum: President Eisenhower's 1950 Lincoln "Bubbletop"

President Truman first rode in this convertible Lincoln. President Eisenhower later had it fitted with a removable transparent top that allowed him to see and be seen even in bad weather. "Bubbletop" soon became the name for the whole car.

I like how you've given us the president's view, so to speak. Fascinating vehicle.

I really appreciate the comment, Tracheotomy Bob. Thank you. :)

That's actually more of a Secret Service view from riding on the back bumper. :)

For the past 3 years at Thanksgiving my church has had a Thanksgiving Market for families in need. We collect enough food for over 100 families, and then the families come in and go "shopping" for the items they want for their meal. This is the first year I've been able to be there and photograph it. Here is the sanctuary just before we open up the market with all the food set up for distribution.
