It's amusing, the difference between the left and right sides of this photograph, a play on the contrasting nature of the forms involved: a zig-zag and tight wave-form set next to wide arching, curvilinear shapes. They seem like two very different images. Perhaps play with some crops, highlighting these broad sweeping beams of light created by the automobile headlamps.

The white balance looks great on the right side; maybe a bit too yellow-green on the ramps.

Anyway, here's one for today:

Trust me, great photographers have stopped posting in these threads because of YOU specifically.

I trust you. Ansel Adams took umbrage, after I'd likened him to a garden gnome, and started posting on Luminous Landscape instead.

Doylem is a declared disliker of HDR

Thanks for your thoughtful post, Phil, though this isn't quite true.

Light is a challenge and an opportunity: to capture the plays of light, and the contrasts between light and shade. I don’t “dislike HDR”, but I wouldn’t meet that challenge with a single photographic solution any more than I’d start every recipe with a spoonful of chilli powder.

For those who want their photography to develop into a life-long passion (not just another pastime), I think HDR represents a cul-de-sac, a dead end. There’s nowhere else to go from there. If HDR is always the answer then, IMO, a photographer is simply asking the wrong questions.

The ability to combine different exposures (in Photomatix, say) is just another tool in the toolbox. It has its uses, though I'm still working out what they are. HDR is mostly used without thought or discrimination, by people who haven't yet got bored with everything tasting of chilli.

Here's a shot from when I first bought Photomatix: the 'straight' version, and the HDR version (from five different exposures). I prefer the HDR version, 'cos it looks like how the scene felt on that occasion.

Lastly, this forum is a 'broad church', with people who offer something more than "Wow!!! That's awesome!!!!!" My opinions, however misguided, are always sincere. But that's all they are: opinions. They can be safely ignored as the rantings of an idiot... :)

Thanks.

I'd prefer it if they were separate portrait shots to be honest, they're both very interesting in their own way, and the pattern is nice, but I don't think it's as effective as it could be and I'm unsure how you could force it to be. Great shot none the less though.

Some tweaking to slightly darken this picture taken on automatic mode.

Hi, folks. I have revised all of my tutorials and edited the Welcome post with new links. I also made the Google Docs folder I keep these in public. That will allow me to add or update them when I'm not the thread starter.

It looks like this: <edit out the usual blah-blah-blah>

If you need any help with posting, try one of these tutorials.

I finally got a chance to mess around with my rig today on my Prelude. First time rig shot ever. I need a better ND filter. Decent... not what I'm looking for but its a good start I'd say. Had to stop as it started to rain.
What do you guys think? Any tips? C&C weclome! :)
