Trust me, great photographers have stopped posting in these threads because of YOU specifically.
I trust you. Ansel Adams took umbrage, after I'd likened him to a garden gnome, and started posting on Luminous Landscape instead.
Doylem is a declared disliker of HDR
Thanks for your thoughtful post, Phil, though this isn't quite true.
Light is a challenge and an opportunity: to capture the plays of light, and the contrasts between light and shade. I dont dislike HDR, but I wouldnt meet that challenge with a single photographic solution any more than Id start every recipe with a spoonful of chilli powder.
For those who want their photography to develop into a life-long passion (not just another pastime), I think HDR represents a cul-de-sac, a dead end. Theres nowhere else to go from there. If HDR is always the answer then, IMO, a photographer is simply asking the wrong questions.
The ability to combine different exposures (in Photomatix, say) is just another tool in the toolbox. It has its uses, though I'm still working out what they are. HDR is mostly used without thought or discrimination, by people who haven't yet got bored with everything tasting of chilli.
Here's a shot from when I first bought Photomatix: the 'straight' version, and the HDR version (from five different exposures). I prefer the HDR version, 'cos it looks like how the scene felt on that occasion.
Lastly, this forum is a 'broad church', with people who offer something more than "Wow!!! That's awesome!!!!!" My opinions, however misguided, are always sincere. But that's all they are: opinions. They can be safely ignored as the rantings of an idiot...
