Haven't contributed on here in ages, but I was struck by this view while driving today. Unfortunately I didn't have my dslr but my 3GS subbed in admirably. :)

cx spring training in late summer...

Cyclocross bicycle racers can participate in three weekend preliminary events to prepare for the start of the fall Cross Crusade Cyclocross series. It's also the time photographers can check out their equipment and get things sorted out before the big kick-off Oct. 3rd. This is from yesterday's Pain + Suffer'n Weekend on Bald Peak west of Portland. The course was run over parts of a harvested wheat field among other terrain. Next weekend the action moves to Hood River in the Columbia River gorge.

Fantastic lighting and composition... just a beuautiful shot which sets the mood of sailing so well....

Thanks, NevadaJack. Regarding the lighting, for anyone who cares: one bare Speedlite, camera right, held aloft by a deluxe "voice activated light stand," also known as my friend Neal. ;)

Nice shot! That's generally the look on my face when I am at the helm as well! Unless I am mistaken, it looks like a nice fast beam reach across the SF Bay? I'm going sailing tomorrow, alas, I am restricted to a small inland lake. But at least I'm sailing! :D

You guessed it exactly. We had a double reef in the main, had the jib furled a bit, and were zipping across the bay at about 8 knots. Good times. :) Have a nice sail on the lake tomorrow!

I prefer the forest in. :)

He said some, not all.

I concur.

As it is now the tops of the trees are at ~1/3, if the tops of the mountains were at the bottom 1/3 of the shot is would add something. As it is now the amount of pure black is just a bit to much.

Lovely sky and I love the colors and tones in the water, mountains and clouds though. It takes a good initial shot to spark a debate on what PP changes could be made, so I don't want to detract from that.

With a sky that strong, I'd be looking to simplify as much as possible: maybe just one or two trees, in silhouette, to 'anchor' the composition. This 'frieze' of trees creates no particular subject, no place for the eye to rest and together they don't create an arresting shape. Just my two-pennorth...

ladybird

I tried to make it appear as though the ladybird was riding a wave of petals....

My friend, Pat Malach, getting the shots for OregonCyclingAction, his website which covers cycling in Oregon and the Pacific NW. I had some fun covering the guy covering the sport.

Out for a quick photowalk today at a local conservation area. I had a ND filter and CIR-POL stacked; some adjustments in Elements 8. C&C welcomed....
