International Coastal Cleanup

In celebration of yesterday's International Coastal Cleanup, here's the result of the effort to clean a beach:

DMP.jpg

Overall, the entire experience was a success. We coordinated teams in several beaches in our state, and got lots of volunteers to participate (we're still processing the data, but we project between 800 and 1200 people). The result: cleaner beaches and tourists that realize that trash doesn't belong on the beach.

All of the above are just exquisite to me. Personally, landscapes are yet to come, I'm still learning to use my camera to its fullest, and slowly developing an eye for a good scene or vignette.

First sunset attempt, suggestions & feedback appreciated.

Finally had an evening with interesting cloud formations and not just a blanket of haze, so decided to leap in and try my first sunset. Next time I'll try a larger f-stop and slower shutter speed to blur the water, and get there early so it's not such a rush setting up. I think I'd also try shooting lower down on the beach, so the jetty is not sitting on the horizon line, but sits quite proud of it. Allowing the golden light through underneath its pylons also.

For a first attempt I thought it wan't too bad, considering how much I forgot to do, such as take shots using the remote! I wanted realism of colour and was trying to get a relatively balanced exposure as my primary concern. I don't have any filters yet to aid with colour saturation or tonal balance, etc...

I'm doing a photography course currently, but we haven't covered sunsets yet, just the technical use of the camera thus far really.

Canon 1100D, EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS II, Manual Exposure, Manual Program, Manual White Balance, 1/125 sec, f/8, ISO 200, Partial Metering, 60mm.

Thanks in advance for any help you may offer me for next time.

I have this same problem, but look at the image closely. It is tilted pretty badly.

Also, I'd suggest not using manual white balance while you are starting out. Use auto, and shoot RAW. Fix it later.

Love the colours and the way they harmonise; they're almost good enough to eat...

That is such a nice looking beach. All you need now, is all of us there !

Thank you all for your comments! We had a great time cleaning the beach, and we hope to make it a regular occurrence, not something that is done once a year. :)
