Thats what i was thinking. I love the throwback!!! But is that graphite or the aluminum that is on the white iphone 5? and what color whould you call the macbook??

Whoo! First time poster, long time reader.

So, let's think with our American "consumer" brains for a second here.

You see a new iPhone from let's say your iPhone 4 or 4s (because if you have a 5, you're only upgrading because your rich or you have to have the latest and greatest).

Gee, that iPhone 5c is new and has all of these color options AND IT'S FREE ON CONTRACT? Wait, there's also a new iPhone 5s and it costs me money and looks the exact same as the old model?

Most normal consumers\purchasers of the iPhone don't care much about internal specs, but rather having the latest and greatest phone (or it costing nothing or next to nothing to them out of pocket). It would look pretty poor to have the same two colors for the 5s next to the rainbow of colors of the 5c.

I think that this is a real smart move on Apple's part and I absolutely agree wit the people stating that the iPhone 5s line are premium metal colors versus the plastic rainbow.

Also, the "graphite" color is a throwback to the original iPhone:

As a purchaser of the original unsubsidized iPhone, this is a day one purchase for me.

True. I would be fine with more color choices and a speck upgrade just as long as they release something new like an iwatch at the ipad event before the holidays.

when is the last time we heard 1 more thing at an iphone event?

... um.. or they could just make batteries that last longer...

Just some features I'd want in an iPhone, which would suit a "platinum" user, and I understand that I would support a different higher class user structure. The features I described to Tim are a wish list, and not really technologically possible yet, I guess, but would hope that the innovative team at Apple thought some ideas were ok, and have some variant of them in development.
Essentially, I want this version of the iPhone to be able to (steal) with user permission, 10% battery power from another iPhone. Simply by magnetically (or otherwise) placing the phones back to back inverted, so the apple logos attached to something in the opposite phone (through technology that doesn't exist) and transmit battery charge to the weaker phone, up to 10%.
Now, because I love an elite class structure, a "platinum" user can obtain 20% from a non platinum iPhone, and with permission ? Maybe not, a "platinum" iPhone deserves it.

Dude, lay off the meds... or perhaps take more!

The graphite/silver is a good colour choice to add to the new champaign gold. It'll be a popular choice as grey goes with anything.

The graphite looks very nice. I will definitely be getting this new colour when it comes time to upgrade from my black iPhone 5.

I wanted this ever since they adopted the slate design! I never liked the dark metal as it scratches off, this graphite version is both aesthetically superior and from a design point in terms of resisting wear and scratches.

Really hahaha
I really do think its a good idea.
I'm always running out of battery. And everywhere around me is other people's phones, but no chargers.
Whatever, someone will take this on board.

You have been convinced to buy one based on its colour? Wow. Just wow.

Apparently you missed the word "may." Also, I have an unlocked iPhone 5 and no longer have a contract. I can very easily upgrade to a 5S If I desire to do so. When one has a 5, the 5S won't be too much of an upgrade so perhaps some people may be convinced by a color. To each his own, right?

Also, what was the point of your comment? trolling?

That's what I was thinking when I first saw it. Another possibility, the gold/champagne replaces the silver trim on the white iPhone. Apple could be doing this to visually differentiate the 5S from the 5. What else can Apple can do to try to overcome the "same look" criticism that 'S' models get. Some people want others to know that they have the latest iPhone and this would help.

If that's the case, then Apple is clearly in a no-win situation.

Here are the possible scenarios, and then the subsequent criticism:

1) Keep only existing choices (black/white) - "It looks the same! Not even a new color! Apple is clearly out of ideas!"

2) Replace old colors with new colors (graphite/gold) - "Who are they trying to fool! It's the same thing! Apple is clearly out of ideas!"

3) Add new colors to existing line (black/white/graphite/gold) - "Apple is adding too many SKUs, and for what, nothing more than new colors? Apple is clearly out of ideas!"

And a hypothetical 4th scenario (which has zero chance of happening)

4) Surprise everybody with a brand new design and larger screen - "Apple realized that they are lagging behind the competition and this is a pitiful attempt at playing catchup. Apple is clearly out of ideas!"

I don't know about anyone else, but I find it disappointing that much of the talk about the new iPhone is about color.

Why do you think that?

Inventory.
If iPhone 5C is available in one size, that's six models.
If iPhone 5S has a new 128gb option, that would be 8 models for two color choices.... or a mind-boggling stocking nightmare of 16 models if they decided to offer 4 colors. I can't see it.

now that's a color option, it's the best iphone i've ever seen, but the problem is, it's and iphone:(. bring a bigger screen add android 4.3 and i'm buying it.

Is it that unusual to talk about what you have actually seen? If we see a pic of a home button I am pretty sure no one will be talking about the color.

It seems that the major news on the iPhone front is different colors and adding a plastic phone to the mix. Perhaps Apple really has something good up it's sleeve, but if these are the big news items, I find it quite disappointing. We'll see in a few weeks.

Nope. Mature enough to NOT make a fool of myself trying to sound "hip", using words that are no longer part of the lexicon.
If you consider it infantile jargon btw, why again were you using it? *confused*

You are possibly the last person to associate it with "hip", since bling is as mainstream as a regular dictionary (check one out, sometime) and CNN, and I used it as such. Not sure why you would even perceive it as "hip"?

And the reference to infantile jargon was not to the word "bling", but your supposed expertise on it (the jargon).

I'm out.

(That's 1997-ish for "enjoy having the last word", btw)

New colours make sense. So people know you've got the new iPhone.

Wouldn't be surprised if the new colours are only available in higher memory spec'd phones too.

I'm pretty sure the "Graphite" color is actually darker than the white iPhone (at least that's the way it looks in pictures). I imagine the color is more along the lines of the current Macbook and Mac Mini coloring vs. the Silvery White iPhone 5.
