I really sincerely hope this isn't it. And I don't mean it in the same way that was said when the iPhone 4 design first leaked. That was beautiful.

This? Who the heck wants a taller phone? I want a bigger screen, but I don't want JUST a taller screen.

Such an odd design, why does it need the giant bezels still? Why even bother making glass sections on the back that small? Terrible.

If they make it just taller, it will have the same ratio as a 16:9 android phone, which people love to claim voraciously that apple is behind.

Also, what makes you think those sections have to be glass? And if you don't think something has to be there, you don't understand the concept of EM waves.

For those that keep saying this is an other render or a mockup, BGR for some reason excluded all of the high-res interior pics.

Ooh, looks like the back and sides are a single piece (i.e. like the unibody laptops). That would be very nice!

Would also allow them to make it thinner.

If this indeed is what's released (which could be entirely wrong), then I'm out. It's been a fun ride and enjoyed it immensely, but there are, IMHO, better Android handsets once upgraded to Jelly Bean. Android 4.1 is the first version (for me) competitive enough to replace IOS and some ways exceed it.

I hope I'm wrong and Apple delivers what I'm hoping for. At this point it's the apps that really set apart iPhone, but I'm not sure what I use day-to-day is enough to keep me on the platform.

I see people all over the internet bitching and moaning over it. Apple has never been one to introduce drastic hardware redesigns every few years just for the sake of it, they consistently iterate and improve existing designs. If someone quickly comes up with a redesign sooner, like with the 4, they'll use it, but they're not going to get caught in the pissing contest that is Android hardware.

that is absolutely not true.

2007, the iPhone was drastically different from everything else.
then the iPhone 3G, very different.
2 years later, iPhone 4, very different.
To this point, they have been on a 2-year redesign cycle.

And competition with Android phones?
at the 2007 keynote, Jobs said "this phone is 5 years ahead of other phones"
well, 5 years have passed, and other phones are at a competitive level. the HTC One X is the only phone i've ever seen that looks better than the iPhone. the H1X and the SGS3 have better cameras and processors. Android has become a fast and functional OS.

So Apple may choose not to shock everyone this year, but if they decide to coast on the still-strong iPhone 4S sales and current look/feel of the OS, they will lose ground.

I'm platform agnostic, and i am hoping that this is not the new phone, and that the real iPhone 5 blows everything else out of the water.

I've been watching these rumors and leaks for month. Has anyone else noticed each leak piggy backs onto the other progressing into a more realistic and believable mock up? This is why I really think this is all nonsense. There's nothing original coming out. Every leak is based on the previous leak and is more refined.

This is it?

When the iPhone 4 was introduced, Steve Jobs did say it had a timeless design like a Leica camera. That was probably his way of saying "we are going to live with this design for a while". This design release is certainly conservative. It's not taking any risks or breaking any new ground, which is unlike the Apple I have grown to love. This design does seem more in keeping with what they are doing with the iMacs, however, so if we view the design in the context of their overall products, it will fit in quite well.

It's just not going to make anyone stand up and clap.

So this looks like iPhone 4.5 more than anything. After all these years in development too, i have to say i'm disappointed.
Looks i'll stick with my 4S until Apple launches a better designed iPhone. Maybe the 2014 iPhone?

I really hope this isn't the 2012 iPhone..

...So, I'm personally not very happy about this. I wanted something somewhat new that starts down a different path. But even most of the switches look identical. Granted, its narrowly still the most popular handset sold, so why change the formula?

However, as an owner of a Galaxy S3... I think I can safely say that unless they pull some kind of rabbit out of their hat, the iPhone 4S at $99 will be the most unbeatable phone overall on the market. With iOS 6 it keeps up with my S3 no problems and the iPhone 4S screen is much higher quality, albeit smaller.

But Apple has to survive an entire YEAR with that as their flagship device and the upcoming challengers are going to be tough to fend off.

Huge phone lovers are going to get the quad core 2GB ram Note2 5.5 soon. This one is going to be crazy fast. If they put a non-pentile screen in it, it's going to sell like crazy.

Super high quality screen lovers are going to get the HTC One XXL soon with a quad core Snapdragon S4 and 2GB of ram (this is the one to watch for IMO). Also the Sony Xperia GX. O.O I really think HTC's screen on the One X is the only screen that surpasses the iPhone 4/4S.

Accessory lovers see the RAZR HD is coming, rumored with the same SoC as the Galaxy S3 but with a non-pentile screen and the Razr MAXX's 3300 mAh battery. Probably compatible with a Lapdock and all the other crazy motorola stuff. Not to mention the MAXX almost outsells the iPhone and costs $100 more. If Motorola can up the ante on the screen and SoC, I think this single phone could pass the iPhone (on Verizon I mean...)

Still, Apple owns small, fast, highest of high quality, and most power efficient and intuitive OS. The Sony Xperia SX and the Droid Incredible 4G LTE sorta share the same space, but neither one are "flagship" devices. On some level, I think handset manufacturers are going bigger screen than the iPhone just so they don't have to compete in that area of Smartphones.

What is a pentile screen?

Can you please provide some good sites to see all those other phones' details that you are suggesting?

How do you think could those other phones' design beat this rumored iPhone 5?

Thanks

And where are Apple's cease-and-decist letters to these leakers? Apple made quite a racket out of issuing those when genuine leaks were spotted. We have seen nothing of the sort here, which leads me to believe all of these leaks are intentional, controlled, and diversionary. However, I am probably also delusional to believe this, but I will keep my hopes up that Apple will surprise us.

The minus on the lower volume button changes orientation between photo 4 and 5. On one, it's horizontal, and on the other, it's vertical. Photoshopped?

well iphone case manufacturers have been coming up with all sorts of mock ups for awhile now. whos to say this isnt just another really nice mockup of what they think is coming.

Because these actually leaked from the factories. The one that "leaked" the time iphone 4s was coming out, we never actually saw a final build of. Unless apple is going to the extremes to keep the "real" design out of site then it seems this will be the final version.

I agree with everything caveated with the Android OS statement. There's some serious mental re-engineering you have to do to get as much out of Android as you do out of an iPhone IMO. Especially when you want to continue to use iTunes for content delivery.

Still, now that Amazon has content delivery on iPhone... it's getting harder to stick with iTunes since Amazon is a seemingly impartial 3rd party to hardware.

As far as drastic changes in Apple hardware design, forget the iPhone:

I dont know if I'm buying this as legit. I'm curious why Apple would leak an unfinished product? Obviously something unfinished will be a bit rough around the edges and not look as polished as the finished product. I don't see this as creating positive buzz...every site thst's posted these pics has more comments not liking it than liking it.

I Agree, completely. this new design is just ugly.. people who owned the 4 and 4S don't want a phone that's taller, OR THE SAME OVERALL DESIGN with bezels that completely match previous iPhones. I personally want a phone that has a bigger screen while not being obnoxiously big like the Galaxy Note, and a slim design that feels good in the hand like the iPhone 3G and 3GS. I also want a screen that fills up the border of the phone. Why Apple why?!

To be honest, I still think it is fake. Not fake as in not made by Apple, but fake as in probably an iPhone 4/4S/5 prototype from 2010/11. Why? Because this doesn't look 2012/13 at all to me and has some major design flaws (that make it look like anything but a final, Jonathan Ive approved Apple product).

So what if Apple actually went so far to deliberately produce some more of these early prototypes just to disguise the real, probably completely different design of the new iPhone?

I admit, there's a lot of wishing involved here, but I seriously cannot believe that Apple will be stupid enough to think that this design and screen size/ratio will be enough to survive in the highly competitive smartphone market for the next two years (assuming that there will only be an S-version in 2013).

I know, they kind of messed up their own opportunities by making up the term Retina display and from a logical viewpoint making the screen taller but not wider indeed seems to be the only option to go 4" without further fragmenting iOS, but it's Apple. They have to come up with something better than this, something like the new design rumoured last year, something thin and sexy as the HTC One X, but with iOS. Not just a slightly modified iPhone 4S with a ridiculous 16:9 screen ratio.

My Thoughts.

I hope all these leaks have been controlled leaks from Apple. I hope Apple surprises us all at the real unveiling. :D
