I'll be standing in line come October :)

To you. Some of us are hoping it stays smaller. Ideally they would just make a monster phone and a regular one.
I'm sure the 4S will be continued to be sold in the 8GB variety (or 16GB if they decide to up the memory to 32GB min).

I quite like the evolution of this design. Filling the ridged gap in the iPhone 4/4S is a big plus. However, I'm not 100% this will be the final design. You know what happened last time folks when the iPhone 5 was supposed to appear.

And where are Apple's cease-and-decist letters to these leakers? Apple made quite a racket out of issuing those when genuine leaks were spotted. We have seen nothing of the sort here, which leads me to believe all of these leaks are intentional, controlled, and diversionary. However, I am probably also delusional to believe this, but I will keep my hopes up that Apple will surprise us.

Why would apple intentionally leak an unfinished product, and leak it to obscure websites? Apple is most known for the fit and finish of their hardware and none of these "leaks" show a completely finished product. They all look a bit rough around the edges. Unless Apple is intentionally leaking fake designs to throw people off.

Looks like a Samsung

This doesn't look to me like an Apple product. It looks to me like a Samsung copy of an Apple product.

It looks like a stretched iPhone 4. I don't know why everyone is impressed, but if you like it, buy it...
I have more faith in Apple than to release a phone with the same design they've had for 2 years.

I was under the impression that the plastic windows were so that the radios can function - which would suggest that the antennae are no longer external. If that is the case, then why does the metal band still have breaks?

Don't want to be too critical, but that looks pretty cheap and tacky.

I hope that's not what it looks like.

I can sort of understand the feeling of disappointment, because we've gotten used to "insanely great" hardware revisions from Apple. BUT...if you consider the 'ideal' iPhone, there's not much room for revising anymore. The ideal iPhone would be nearly flat, comfortable to hold in one hand and use with a thumb, and have a simple exterior (few buttons, holes, etc). If this new design is real (and it does look pretty convincing), then it is thinner, has a larger screen (without compromising "holdability"), and smaller connector (probably to make room inside for a larger battery, NFC, or other components).

To those who are upset if this is the real iPhone 5, where exactly do you think Apple could have improved or innovated? The only things they can really change anymore are the materials, colors, and minor changes to buttons or ports/connectors. The major improvements have to come from the internals (eg processor) or software. Has the Samsung Galaxy S3 had some drastic change in form factor other than making the screen larger? It's only 2 inches shy from being a 7 inch tablet now! Does that make it a better smartphone? I've held one and I couldn't imagine carrying one around in my pocket. I even wish the iPhone was flatter (which it looks like the iPhone 5 will be).

As others have mentioned look at the volume down button. Horizontal in one pic vertical in the other.

Not feeling it

Seems like all Apple is doing and talking about anymore are numbers. Increasing these numbers, decreasing those numbers making x amount of profit, taking % of the market. This is what happens when you put a suit in charge of things instead of an engineer.

Wtf @ the volume button, first and foremost.

Second, what the hell is up with all of the whiny biitching?! -____- "It's not revolutionary enough" "omg the iPhone 4 was timeless this is stupid"

What is WRONG with all of you people?! Go design a better phone if all you're going to do is complain that a company's phone isn't 'revolutionary' enough for you, based off a few PICTURES. Reading half of the replies here seriously makes me cringe.

What were you expecting?

Something that looks new and different, not the same. This is the sort of phone where, like the 4 and 4S, people will always be asking "So it that an iPhone 5? Or the 4S?". Especially once its in a case, you'll barely know the difference.

they are just playing it safe again. (like 4 to 4S) no visionary genius on top = no clue what to do next, no innovation. a recycled 2 year old design is maybe not enough this time.

I agree. 2 years at this design? I am going to android if that's the case

I am genuinely curious as to what an Android smartphone would offer you that the new design does not (let's just assume for the moment that this leak is real)? Is outer form factor the only reason you chose an iPhone to begin with? Did the software or battery life not play any part in the decision?

that is absolutely not true.

2007, the iPhone was drastically different from everything else.
then the iPhone 3G, very different.
2 years later, iPhone 4, very different.
To this point, they have been on a 2-year redesign cycle.

And competition with Android phones?
at the 2007 keynote, Jobs said "this phone is 5 years ahead of other phones"
well, 5 years have passed, and other phones are at a competitive level. the HTC One X is the only phone i've ever seen that looks better than the iPhone. the H1X and the SGS3 have better cameras and processors. Android has become a fast and functional OS.

So Apple may choose not to shock everyone this year, but if they decide to coast on the still-strong iPhone 4S sales and current look/feel of the OS, they will lose ground.

I'm platform agnostic, and i am hoping that this is not the new phone, and that the real iPhone 5 blows everything else out of the water.

Lol, look at the join dates of all those "pro-Androiders" here. They all joined MacRumors in July… I wonder which company Google hired to do their social marketing?!

What if new and different compromises the usability of the phone? HOW would you make it new and different?

Steve Jobs is not the angel you all make him out to be. He did not make the iPhone on his own and countless numbers of people played a part in getting it to where it is today. I really don't understand how a few pictures makes you all whine and bitch stating "no innovation = no buy." Who CARES if they 'play it safe' they have a strong product that sells AMAZINGLY. They are a business and they act like one. Their consumers unfortunately are ridiculously demanding, apparently.

Interesting catch. Maybe those buttons are not attached to anything and spin in place because its a mockup. The tolerance on the back between the plastic and metal looks off.

Or it's just two different prototypes to try and figure out how the volume down button should be positioned.

I'll tell ya
I've been using the 3G to 3GS to 4 to 4S.
Same old home screen, lock screen (okay I can switch wallpapers but whatever), same old 3.5 screen.

Phones are different from say... The Macbook pro... where don't need a redesign that often. Phones are different because the technology is rapidly changing, with tons of phone makers...

I switched from 4S to SIII, and let me tell you, it's just THAT different, in a good way.
Consumer psychology I guess.
