Personally I don't dig the audio recording app layout. Why waste so much space on a microphone graphic? Lame. Why not have a graphic audio editor? Or at least have the imitation VU meter be the whole screen? At least that is some what useful.

Also let's hope for some phone call conversation recording. As well possibly in app recording for things like skype or (fingers crossed) ichat.

Eh, it's not a big deal to me. I think the main screen is somewhat useless, it's very similar to the visual voicemail application in terms of playback though.

Autofocus appears very cool. As for the compass? Well, since I have never actually used a compass since I was in Cub Scouts, I think I can live a fulfilled life without one. That being said, I'd like to see what developers can do with this before I pass any further judgement. Until then, it's just a compass.

To know exactly where your iPhone is pointing. You may be able to point your iPhone at a landmark and know exactly what it is.

*Jaw drops*

...which has all sorts of usefulness for turn-by-turn navigational apps when your GPS fix gets a bit jumpy...

This would be very cool and useful.

Honestly, I don't understand why they even include a camera. It's a total piece of **** - especially by Apple's standards.

I have taken more blurry photos than I care to delete.

Steve, you cannot tell me you use the camera for anything useful.

Looks pretty cool. I like the idea of the blue square to choose the focal point. I'm am excited to upgrade :D

The camera is FAR from useless. I'll have you know I LOVE it, and don't have a digital camera anymore because it is always in my pocket whenever I need it with my iPhone 3G. I am not a photographer, I just wanna snap pics here and there and the iPhone is more than adequate for that now, let alone with the new upgrades coming. Also the 3.0 software takes noticeably better pictures!

I am so sick of all the morons in here whining about mega-pixels when the lens and other things are much more of a factor to image quality. IT IS A #&$&#*@ PHONE PEOPLE, IF YOU ARE A PHOTOGRAPHER GO BUY A REAL DIGITAL CAMERA AND STOP EXPECTING A PHONE TO BE SOME $2000.00 CAMERA!!!

While the auto-focus is useful, I'm more interested in the compass. As someone who has no sense of direction, this would definitely enhance the GPS. Also, this would be useful when I'm out in a strange city.
Under normal lighting conditions, the iPhone takes pretty decent photos that are suitable for facebook, myspace, etc. As other people have said, if I want better picture quality, I'll use my digital camera.

The website is HK-based.

He said a friend from US brought back a prototype iphone 3.0 to him. The actual release might look different from this prototype (I hope its true.. the same old iphone look is boring... it has been the same for 2 years already..)

He was asked not to take clear pic of it, thus all pics are blurry and there will not be comparison pic of the new and old iphones.

Hope iphone will be a much better cam this time.. Come on.. even the Prada phone got a 5MP cam..
Sony ericsson is releasing a cellphone with 12MP cam.. current gen iphone is still 2MP.. omg...

Flipphone will be a plus... if you guys have time, take a look in Japan's docomo website.. their phones design is just a few gen ahead of other countries' cellphone..

I agree and I hate that it's an app by itself, if I wanted a voice recording app I'd download one. I don't want one to be taking up space on my phone otherwise. It would have been better had Apple just stuck it in the notes app.

Yet still, the number of megapixels crammed into a 1/4" sensor doesn't matter....I would love to see Apple throw in a 1/2" sensor and a nice big (relatively) lens, but that would make the phone look like crap and take up a ton of room.

The iPhone looks 100% like the 3G.
Autofocus seems like a cool feature, but it's just some mean strategy of apples to not include it in the 2G and 3G.
The compass and the voice recording apps layouts don't look good at all.
On the website there is also a picture that shows that you will be able to send videos via MMS.

3.0 doesn't include Digital Compass... As far as speculation goes, that's only a 3rd Gen iPhone feature.

And if you look at the bottom right of the camera in action, there's clearly a slider between PHOTO icon and VIDEO icon.

3G cannot and will not do video.

Woah there skippy it IS possible for it to do video. I can on my 2g not through apple of course but the hardware to accomplish it is there. MMS too for that matter, but meh I'm upgrading in July anyway so I'll get over it.

There was a report a little while back that suggested the compass could be used to provide info on a building you are facing (i.e. streetview kind of idea with details of business occupant (business name, phone, email, address etc) superimposed.

See Wikitude augmented tourist reality on the compass-equipped Android phones.

There was also the idea that one could hold it up to the sky and be provided information about constellations at night. That sounded pretty cool but who knows how practical and possible....

Quite possible. Android phones use their GPS and compass for the Google Sky Map.

Android phones having compasses, has encouraged Apple and other companies to add one too.

Its not a mean strategy of Apple not to include autofocus on the 1st and 2nd gen iPhone. Would you like them to take everyones phone back and add new hardware for free. Its no different than the 3g radio in the 2nd gen phone. I do agree that the mms and stereo bluetooth would probably work just fine on the 1st gen phone.

It does do video if you change the software.....so the hardware is fine. Jail broken iPhones can do video.....so the 3G can do and will do video....

autofocus seems nice. compass? not very useful, though i can imagine a ton of app will be able to take advantage of this.
