I thought the new iPhone was losing the external antenna hence the bands on the back and the unibody shell?

True, but after reading the article you posted, they keep comparing the bracket it sits in to the bracket in a 3G. The 3G screen sat flush to the phone.

I think what we'll see is a very slight raise above the body....like we see in the right corner you pointed out.

**crosses fingers**

I think you’ll get your wish: it will stick out, but not a whole lot. (7.6mm +.5mm = 8.1mm maybe?)

But if you want a wild reason to hope for a perfect flush faceplate, here’s a scenario:

•*The lip seen we see is slightly-different alternate design, built in case the in-cell display was not ready. Apple’s backup plan.

• But with the in-cell display (hopefully it IS ready to use) being thinner, a slightly different, thinner plastic frame can be used to hold a thinner glass element. The rest of the design is the same, but this change makes the face flush.

Yeah, I know. Probably not.

The 4S fixed the “problematic” external antenna bands, and the new iPhone seems to be similar. The external antennas are now the top and bottom segments, while the sides (all of a piece with the back) are just for show.

There’s still a need for the glass windows in back: for other antennas. The iPhone has many antennas, for cell signals, WiFi, Bluetooth (and Nike+?) and GPS. But not, it seems, NFC...

Thanks, I know the 'problematic" (though as a 4 user I have never experienced it) antenna was fixed in the 4s, I just thought the new iPhone was losing all the external antenna's and all of them were now being placed inside along with the others.

There will be a shock absorbing material between the metal-bezel and the display-glass like in this patent:
http://www.appleinsider.com/article...patent_for_iphone_display_shock_absorber.html
Materials selected for their viscoelastic properties could be selected to reduce shocks on the component. In the case of the iPhone, a thin rubber bezel rests between the Gorilla Glass display and the exterior bezel of the device.

I'm more concerned about the Display-construction itself. I hope there will not be a gap between the front-glass and the LCD Panel itself. It's perfect in the iPhone 4/4S

I think they combined the two colors in the last picture, the black with the "light" aluminum color looks weird.

I like the new thinness of it though.

It is butt ugly.

----------

I'm still skeptical about this being the final design, not because of the stretched screen, but damn, those are some fugly speaker grills.

Not just the grills, but the whole 2 tone look.

Sweet merciful christ this thing is ugly.

----------

Ok, it seems we have officially reached the stage in the Apple product cycle were majority were saying "it's ugly!" to "it's beautiful!".

Leo

It's still god damn ugly.

It's not ugly. It just isn't great looking. I'll be getting one regardless. The taller screen and thinner body is welcome. Let's hope it's lighter as well.

Seriously? Compared to the previous generations, those speaker grills look great.

and people still think it isn't real. amazing.

It's amazing that people write about this thing like it's already here.

I really hope the phone is not this piece of *****, mostly because it makes baby Jesus cry, but partly so that those who are drooling over it will be shown as believing any old tripe.

You'll be out there also, complaining right up until the moment you land one. Just you wait and see.

Yeah....no.

I've never waited in line or camped out overnight for anything.

Thanks. I'll pass and enjoy a comfortable night at home.

I was actually about to post that this is the first picture I've seen that actually made the color look appealing to me. The darker grey/black combination that I had been seeing in previous leaks looks cheap and PC-like to me.

The white with black windows model looks absolutely beautiful. The speaker holes look fantastic too, if you ask me. Far more minimalist, neater than the iPhone 4's speakers. This is shaping up to be a truly gorgeous phone.

I genuinely envy you - experiencing that game for the first time. Enjoy! It's a classic.

Exactly my opposite. I love everything about the new design except the speaker/mic grills. Looks like a cheap knockoff. Definitely 4/4s looks better.
And the 3.5mm jack just makes it worse and busier. I wouldn't think of it as minimalist.

A finer and denser grills would be a lot better looking. Though I could agree on headphone jack placement. More ergonomic but less good-looking.

I hope the final design will change those.

Version 5

IF the design is as you're displaying here, the Apple design team has failed - miserably. Same old - same old...

Wow! That 'Unibody' iPhone is starting to grow on me Big Time. It must feel really solid in your hand. (Just like when the Unibody MBAs & MBPs first came out. From flimsy to solid in one fell swoop.) Not to mention that gorgeous shiny little bevel-edge all around. If this turns out to be a hoax, I sure hope they have something even better lined up. :)
