Do you even know what you're talking about?

You can install a 100% 64-bit Windows Vista or Windows 7 System on virtually any Mac (i.e. the Kernel and most included apps are 64-bit), yet Apple, who happens to make all of those computers, has intentionally disabled the 64-bit Kernel on some of its computers and not enabled it by default on all but one model (the Xserve) in it's next OS.
I was making reference to twisted posts such as these, which make imbecilic attempts to equate SL's transition toward 64-bit with Vista dropping of promised core features:

It's beginning to look like true 64-bit is like one of the "missing features" in Vista that was dropped to make the schedule (one of the schedules, at least). Promised, but not really there at the end....

I meant that early descriptions of Vista "promised" some interesting and useful things that weren't shipped in the final Vista product.

The early messages about 10.6 talked about the advantages of true x64 support, yet it looks like the final 10.6 is going to appear to fall short of those promises.

That's the parallel - over-promise and under-deliver for both Microsoft and Apple.
This is parallel? Comparing SL's relatively smooth transition to 64-bit to Vista's abortion of core features and its abysmal, not-nearly-ready-for-prime-time-release? This would be comparing a relatively small hill to a substantially large mountain - speaking of the two in the same breath does not make their levels of initial "readiness" and functionality comparable, by any means.

While I agree that Apple should not block the use of a 64-bit kernel on the MacBook, the fact remains that there are many driver and software incompatibilities with a 64-bit kernel under OS X. The likelihood of an incompatibility arising with a desktop or portable Mac is much higher than it is with an Xserve due to the sheer number of 3rd-party accessories and programs that exist for consumers.

If you look at Windows, Microsoft had sort of a testing ground for 64-bit drivers with Windows XP, their first consumer release for x86_64 processors. Apple has had no such luxury. There hasn't been a special version of OS X for tech enthusiasts with a 64-bit kernel. Even Windows Vista 64-bit did not have universal adoption due to incompatibilities that remained, but Microsoft took a bold step and required manufacturers to produce 64-bit compatible drivers in order to declare products "Made for Windows Vista," which has almost completely eliminated problems with Windows Vista 64-bit and in turn Windows 7 64-bit, since Windows Vista has been on the market now since 2006.

Apple can not be expected to have full compatibility when using a 64-bit kernel at this point. I think that we can expect a "sufficient" level of compatibility for most people by a 10.6.4 point release or perhaps a bit later, and a level equivalent to that provided in the Windows world by 10.7.

Ah, so then Windows is after all, a whole generation ahead then... :p :D

This rampant speculation is driving me nuts!
I mean come on, I think it's pretty safe to say we're going to have it before the end of September!

So with that I'm unsubscribing and waiting for an email from Apple.
Besides, I prefer surprises! :D

Bonne Chance!

It was one thing for them to think it was fake; I can understand that and I learned a lot about design by reading some of the thoughts on column alignment and fonts and so forth. Those were logical reasons to believe this was fake. But I laugh at the tools who claimed those who believed it was real were idiots. More than one person in this thread said they would laugh at the rest of us when the "real" SL packaging came out because of how "stupid" we were to believe the purported packaging shown in this thread. One person in particular was full of ridicule, and I can't wait to see if he shows up in this thread again.

I don't know why it is so hard for people to just admit they don't know something instead of thinking their opinion makes things fact.

oh er

No doubt Safari will be snappier regardless of packaging :)

The problem is that they wanted to show off all their DTP 'skills' when in reality you can't apply that logic to a picture of a box from a weird angle; all the 'neat things' they did were pointless in the end because it proved nothing. They won't admit they're wrong simply because they view themselves as experts at one thing that obviously makes them experts at all things Mac related.

lol @ anybody who thinks this is real, and lol even harder at the retards who slam anyone who has the sense to point out why this could NEVER be real.

This is a prime example of the type of person who can not engage in a reasoned discussion. The leaks of the GM and the pictures of the final packaging were not coming from Twitter accounts. If you followed the leaks from various websites who stated their sources were reliable, you could reasonably conclude that the pictures and GM stories were true.

I assure you I am perfectly capable of engaging in reasonable discussion - I was simply reacting in kind to comments from bigoted, racist trolls like Target362.

I'll confess - I'm *very* surprised this packaging turned out to be genuine, and I really feel this is a step backward for the Apple design team - it just doesn't make sense on so many levels for them to change the packaging like this. Still, I agreed in a previous post that if I was wrong I'd come on here and take the heat for standing by my claim, so here I am - fire away.
