Just what do you think their "extensive testing" is worth anyway? They tested CS3 "extensively" for Leopard and gave it two thumbs up, then a few days after the official release of 10.5 it turned out that if you were using Leopard + CS3 and saved Photoshop documents to a network share, the files became corrupted beyond repair. That's an extremely serious issue (it destroyed your effing files!) and dead easy to spot for anyone who used it for half an hour, yet it slipped through the "extensive testing". They addressed that with a maintenance update after a few weeks. CS3 *still* doesn't work properly on Leopard, it's a known problem that a few of the apps (Dreamweaver, Flash, possibly more) hang for a minute or two on launch unless you disable the Welcome screens, and compatibility with Spaces is dodgy at best. It's not like SL can make CS3 crappier on Mac than it already is (the Windows version always served me well, though).

Adobe are a bunch of clowns... out the companies whose software I have to use against my will in my line of work (Microsoft, Steinberg etc), Adobe are the absolute worst – yes, worse than M$. After the Macromedia acquisition they've become a complacent dinosaur that makes Microsoft look like a young sly go-getter... Adobe makes awful, insanely overpriced bloatware with barely any new features from version to version, the only thing you get is the same ancient bugs that they've left unfixed for aeons. And if you use CS on both Windows and OS X you have to buy two CS licenses (all the music/audio software I use ships with the PC and Mac versions on the same media and allow for two installations with any PC/PC, PC/Mac, Mac/Mac combo). Adobe is in dire need of serious competition that brings them down to planet Earth... or better yet, six feet under.

Oh, and their pesky little Flash plugin is the #1 source of crashes on both PC and Mac... nice job.

Holy cow - I could not have said this better myself - + you pointed out the blatant fact that the US anti-trust system failed to see, there is no major competitor - luckily no one I know actually uses flash anymore. It sux.
Oh - except for kids games.

Adobe needs to start again, spin off a few startups etc. They used to be darlings.

Adobe should have accepted the fact that not that many Mac people were upgrading to CS4 to begin with. And because CS5 is not out yet, they should've just bit it and support CS3 until they have a worthy upgrade for Mac people.

or wild and crazy thought, figure out why folks are supposedly not upgrading to CS4 and fix that.

like it or not, there's no law requiring Adobe to continue to support the superceded versions of their software. Just like there is no law requiring Apple to continue to support PPC apps, massively old hardware etc.

Sorry if you are shocked that any of this is happening but it is the nature of the game. But don't go screaming that Apple, Adobe or anyone else is in the wrong for exercising their legal rights to do or not to do.

I'm not upgrading to CS4 just because Adobe wants to be cute.

I downloaded the CS4 trial to see if it was worth upgrading - 1GB.
Click on install - message: photoshop can only install in case-insensitive file system. Oh yeah I'm forced to run CS3 from a disk image...

Why oh why did I select a case-sensitive file system again? And why is Photoshop not compatible with this - Dorothy, bring me my gun.

Four words - Crap Software For All.

One acronym - CS4 (sucks)

mind you i'm not suggesting that they should support it, and fix any issues. i'm just saying they should do a full test, and be able to report to users, who spent in some cases $1000+ on their software, what they expect to see happen if they tried to use it.

at least that way users can be more confident in going out and spending more money on CS4 and know whether it's even necessary or not.

John Nack, Dave Howe and I are keeping folks up to date on issues via our blogs and twitter:

I don't like CS4 that much.
Something about the completely new interface just doesn't seem right.

CS3 was a great upgrade, CS4 not so much.

And, please Adobe, just listen to your customers... No one wants to shell out a ton of money for an upgrade. Lower the prices for the upgrades. We already pay $1000+ for Creative Suite packages.

Great news for PSE6/Mac users from David Howe (via Twitter):

@dhowe said:
Workaround for Photoshop Elements 6 issue launching on Snow Leopard after restoring from Time Machine is to uninstall/reinstall PSE6.

Seriously, thanks Adobe! The follow-up/follow-through is appreciated!
