That would be design wise a step backward ... looks like a blown up iPhone 3G(S) - don't think they will use the 'old' iPhone 3 design for the new iPad. And as mentioned by others, don't think this design of the edges would be very usable for devices bigger than the iPhone.

I take this with a grain of salt. It's just a mock up from a vendor who got specs from a 3rd party and no knowledge of the real product. I'm sure when we see the real thing, it will look much more slick.

Good way for them to get attention at CES though. :)

Seems you said that about the first version... and it's selling like hot-cakes! :D

Why so positive all the time?

I meant that the curve of the sides and the flat back are very similar to the 3rd Generation of iPod Touch.

I am beginning to think they just like messing about with the shape of cases for kicks. They make flat squared edges, they make rounded tapered edges, they make flat squared edges, they make rounded tapered edges...

I have this image in my mind of Jony Ive in a giant hamster's wheel, stopping every year or so and saying to his team 'Wait! ... rounded, tapered edges are in!' then again a year later 'Wait!! ... squared-off flat edges now! And someone bring me some cheese (with squared-off flat edges)!'

Looks like a regression design-wise, when we consider the MBA going from curved to more angular, same for iPhone 3 to 4. TBH the mockup looks a bit crap. Let's hope the real thing looks a lot better.
Still think iPhone 3was much nicer looking...

Based on what I've seen on the pictures It doesn't look that great...

BFD - I care more about the specs than the form factor.

I tend to agree, particularly since I haven't actually seen mine since it slid it into its case last June.
Now weight might be another matter. Liquid Metal maybe?

I passed on the first version of the iPad (just like I did on the first version of the iPhone). As great as the iPad seemed on some levels, it underwhelmed in comparison to the iPhone 4 in almost all features other than size.

I really look forward to seeing this version - and buying it. That, and one day a Macbook Air. My Macbook Pro feels heavy and clunky lately. Changing times.

I bought the Ipad 3G on day one...preordered it. It rocks even today. I will get the IPad 2 also and give my Ipad 1 to my girlfriend.

I am hoping that it has around 1GB of ram and a dual core A5 processor....64GB of storage is enough...I have over 450 Ipad apps and have about 45Gb of space left...but if they offer a 128GB Ipad 2 with DualCore A5 and 1Gb of RAM and a HDMI and USB port...I am all over it day one....preorder here we come...

Plus hopefully the price will be $100 to $200 cheaper...$399 base price for a 32GB Ipad2 will destroy the rest of the industry.

If they can through a retina display in there and ofcourse the dual cameras....maybe 2 MP front and 5 MP rear.

Exactly. Apple no longer seems to have any design consistency across their product line (besides mostly being aluminum). It's like they pick the designs out of a hat every year. Jonathan Ive must be getting bored since there's not much room for creativity on touchscreen devices.

Would you like a jetpack with it as well?

Apple is more about making lots and lots of money. Destroying the industry with dumping prices will make them only loose money. If there is one thing we can be sure of with the iPad2, than it's that they will make lots of money with it (and I will be one of those who spend their hard earned money the second you can pre-order it)

If The Last One Was "Magical".....

What adjective is SJ gonna use to create the mojo for this one????

Supercalifragilisticexpeealidocious!!!!!????

Not a big fan of the current touch's back, so it being translated into the ipad is meh. :( Apple is having a harder time keeping their products secret. It's inevitable though. If you get this popular, there's no way to keep it unknown. Especially if your manufacturer is overseas.

There are thousands of Worker Bees in China working on these Apple devices, it's inevitable that details leak out, also, is Apple going to dump a multimillion dollar order because case details slip out, even Jobs would admit that they can hardly change manufacturers over stuff like this, they can yell and scream all they like, but, it's not like this is a Gizmodo type leak...

Completely. 100%. Agree. This is rubbish. It another way to get more of a "WOW" factors when the iPad "2" actually he's released, or sneak peeked. For some reason, I doubt they will even call it the iPad "2". Everyone who has said that it looks outdated it correct. Apple wouldn't do this. They steal my money and I don't care. I love apple. Can't wait much longer, because I one of those who had waited for the second gen to come around. Lot of people like me. Just making excuse NOT to buy the iPad because I know another one will be right around the corner. But, that's the game, and unfortunately. I love to play it. Cheers.

I hope that is the shape of the next one because a flat back would be nice. The current one doesn't wobble a lot but it is just enough to be annoying.

I'm still hoping for an SD card slot though so I don't have to carry around the camera connection kit dongle all the time. Of course, I won't really care about it unless they improve the photo app in terms of organization.

I like the curved back of the current one. It makes it easier to pick up off a flat surface. Do you actually use your iPad while its sitting on a table? I know I never have. That totally defeats the purpose of a tablet, and its not very ergonomic.

Is it just me or do the two images on this story not seem to match??? The top looks like a Black back and the bottom show a more squared off aluminum back? Or I'm I just not seeing this right?

Ahhh.... does not matter.. it's a 3rd party mock up who is guessing anyway. :D

I'm curious who, exactly, "fears" an iPad with curved edges.

While not "fears" exactly, it's kinda annoying to have a curved back on a device which is often set and used on a table. My iPad kinda rocks around a bit when touch-typing on it; would rather it have a flat back so it stays flat when I lay it flat.

The chromed surface has a similar problem: sliding. While the iPad 1's surface is pretty darned smooth, it is textured just enough to provide at least a little friction for holding.

Put an iPod Touch on a table and start typing, and it will start flopping and sliding around. It's not made for such use; it's made to be held, with fingers wrapped around two sides, and interacted with for a few seconds at a time.
