I really like this shot. The photo that the wedding photographer passed on.

Also, it doesn't hurt that both both women in this photo are gorgeous!

Ah, ok, so it's Copenhagen, DK you're talking about. I thought Christiania was the old name for one of the OTHER Scandinavian capitals, possibly Oslo.

I feel as I shouldn't be posting in this thread because all of your photos are so beautiful.

Anyways, until I can invest in a DSLR, here's a few of my favourites taken with my trusty Kodak DX6490.

Camera isn't THAT important. It's all about composition and use of color and light. An SLR just makes some things easier.

Most of my stuff was shot on a cheap Pentax P&S or an older KSX SLR.

I especially enjoyed the shot of the basketball. A closer crop would be even cooler.
 
I've seen you post that dog one before, and I remember thinking how beautiful it was at the time. Still do. :)


Oh, and not to be picky, but we're trying to post 1 photo per day in this thread instead of everything we've got. And iGary is gonna eventually say this, so I'll say it now........

Agreed, all four of the shots were great examples IMO of a decent eye.

The first four pictures I posted in the Weekend thread (https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/203704/) were taken with a P&S. And the sliders one here too. Albeit one of the more expensive ones. :eek:

You are right I think that closer cropping on the basketball picture, as well as the dog might have yielded more punch. Same way with the beach chairs. Eliminating the distracting foreground might have made it stronger.

Even going further, by thinking out side the box - an odd crop, converting to B&W with a deep red contrast filter under Photokit, and some quick adjustments in the levels can lead to an image that has maybe more impact. As my quick and dirty reworking of Rick's beach shot shots.

Wow! I can see this done at 36x36 inches and being the awe at an art show Clix! Or in the least as a corporate art piece. Was this handheld, and just how much magnification of the subject was involved?

How do you like the 60mm? I'm looking at the new VR 105mm at some point.

Thanks, Chip! I'm pretty pleased with it, too. I'm involved in an online group of women digital photographers, and each month we have challenges, including one where we are given a list of ten words for which we need to take a photo. One of the words this time was "spring," as in the season, a coiled object, a leap..... So I rummaged around and found my colored Slinky. Came out here and set it on the dining table on top of a couple of colored boxes with the idea of taking a shot of it "stepping" down the boxes. As it happened, my iMac (which is still living on the dining table until I get a new workstation) was still on and my current desktop is a macro of a yellow flower. I started playing with the camera and positions, and when I looked through the viewfinder and saw the possibilities for a very different kind of shot, right away I discarded the "stepping" idea and concentrated on the coils and the intriguing yellow background formed by the desktop wallpaper....

Yes, this was hand-held (hence the rather high ISO so I could get a somewhat decent shutter speed and aperture). My initial intention had been to put the camera on the tripod and use my light tent to shoot the Slinky "stepping," but once I saw the other possibilities, I just hand-held the camera for more flexibility in positioning. Only lighting source was room light, the ceiling fixture light and the light glowing from my iMac. I spent some time taking a lot of shots around and through the Slinky's coils, using both auto focus and manual focus. When I was finished I uploaded the images into the iMac and was really amazed at what I was seeing.

The image is not cropped, that is the magnification/size that came out of the camera. I adjusted the contrast, used unsharp mask, saved one version at full resolution and then resized another version for the web.

Thanks! Yes, I think it's the color contrasts and the shapes which really make this image....

I love the 60mm! I have the "old" 105mm and am (im)patiently waiting for my local camera shop to call me to tell me that the 105mm VR that I've had on pre-order for a long time is finally here. Nikon has had a huge demand for this lens and just can't get them out to the stores fast enough. I like the "old" 105mm very much and use both it and the 60mm a lot for macro work. The 105 is good when I want a little more space between me and the subject (especially skittish bugs or bees!). The advantages of having VR on the new 105 are that one can have slower shutter speeds and higher apertures without loss of quality in the image and without needing to use a tripod. Sometimes it's kind of hard to use a tripod when trying to shoot macros of plants or flowers that are very close to the ground.

I find that with the 60mm, I am more inclined to get right in there, up close and personal, poking my way into a flower's innards, exposing its privates....

The 60mm is fairly inexpensive (as Nikon lenses go) and I would definitely recommend that if you're interested in macro work, you invest in it, either a new one or a used one in excellent condition.

^^That photo is very very soft. Is that because of the f/1.6 aperture setting leaving you a very small part of the flower in focus, or is it because you handheld it, or some editing?

Either way, I like it. :)
