This is the new Student Center at SCAD. It's a five-story building with like 20 iMacs, several pool tables, like six or eight plasma TVs, and a lot of other cool stuff for SCAD students to use for whatever. The freshmen got the first look at it, and I was pretty impressed. This is the atrium on the second floor that you can see all the way up to the top. Colors unedited. The ceiling and all the lights in the building change color simultaneously, and sync with music. Awesome.

Sony DSC R1

4 Shot HDR and Tone Mapped image

This shot shows one of the difficulties of HDR. Any movement of the camera or subject will blur the image because the images aren't quite lined up. Due to the wind and me moving the camera between exposures, this one isn't as sharp as it ought to be. Some of my previous posted pictures were taken on that mountain in the background.

Very nicely done. I love the glow in the foreground.

The Nikon D200 has exposure bracketing as do various prosumer digicams. Wouldn't you use that function while keeping the camera on a tripod? This would at least minimize or eliminate camera movement shot-to-shot.

Thats what I did, but I guess even a little movement is enough to blow the alignment. I need a better tripod and a cable release, I guess.

My Entry

Here is a recent shot I made. Kind of on accident, but It turned out. I call it Going Nowhere. Taken with a Canon A620 7.1MP in B/W mode. Im still learning, so go easy on me, lol.

I think you get away with the softness in this image. It suits the mood. Either that or it gives the image its mood?

What software are you using for HDR-ing? Is the tone mapping part of the same software? What on earth is tone mapping?!

By the way you are right - we DO get some rain here in Dundee!

As a matter of interest what tripod are you using? Do you use a ball head? I do and am desperately trying to break it so I can get a proper pano type head. Despite being Manfrotto the ball can slip with the weight of a D200 and lens on it.

Thanks for that.
I used the Photomatix Pro program. I give some explanation how I used it in previous posts, including #'s 2008 and 2009. HDR stands for high dynamic range, referring to the technique of combining bracketed exposures to increase the ability of the final image to display a more complete range of highlight and shadow detail and colour. Tone mapping evens out the result.

see photomatix's site: http://www.hdrsoft.com/

As to the tripod, it's a very, very ordinary, tilt-pan head Velbon I picked up when I bought my first digital camera (Canon A95) 1 1/2 years ago. I'd like to get a good pano-head and some sturdy but fairly light legs to hold it up. Maybe soon--I get an end of contract bonus in late October.

I got off work early on Wednesday, so I had time to go out and try some night exposures.
For this one I used the old backlight-the-plastic-scarecrows-with-a-flashlight trick. I also used the flashlight to light up the plants a bit.

While a college of art and design SHOULD have fancy, stylish buildings, this building just makes it look like the college has too much money for their own good...
