1. Carbon is tough as old boots, but will only really stop the aluminium getting dented from drops, or things landing on it. It certainly won't cushion the iPad internals from any hefty drops onto a hard surface (but it will stop it denting unlike a skin). My main reason for having it is to stop abrasions from the iPad being in my rucksack every day as I pedal to and from work.

I was gonna say carbon fiber is all very good and well but how about shock absorbency? If it fell out of you bag on tarmac/concrete, rolling is the shell going to be enough? A carbon fiber skin alone would stop abrasion in you bag if thats your main concern.

Right now I have a horrible case but I plan to upgrade it very soon to a smart cover plus back. I'm waiting on Aviiq to get their act together on that but I may buy something in the interim so I can start using the smart cover now. I want a back on it so I've been waiting..

I plan to use the smart cover like this for reading

That's not me. It's Andy Ihnatko from this post www.flickr.com/photos/andyi/5545602693/

I seriously considered either the Griffin Intellicase or the Speck Pixelskin HD but neither we're quite to my liking. I definitely think http://www.iballz.info/ are funny.

My only gripe with the Targus Vuscape is that the typing position isn't stable. That little flimsy 'flap' that is meant to hold the iPad in the typing position won't hold very long once you start actually typing on the screen. They need to go back and fix that in a redesign.

Otherwise, agree with the OP.

However, and this is directed to the OP:

Dude, you need to work on your skin application skills. You've got a big bubble right next to the camera and another in the corner just above that. Did you apply this correctly, using a hair dryer on the corners after getting the back perfectly aligned?

Thinnest protection needed:
screen cover on front
bestskinsever skin on the back

smart cover on occasion

Fine for when you're at home but if you go out and about you will need something more than that. What you invest in protection you'll more than make back in re-sale when the time comes if you manage to keep your iDevice in mint condition

I'm a brand new iPad owner...inherited an iPad 2 last week from a family member who upgraded. I seriously considered the Marware CEO case but ended up with...

Cyber Acoustics (aka Maroo) IC-1002BK. I picked it up Friday after I found them on sale at Staples.

I'm pretty happy with it. My family member has a CaseCrown bold case with was OK but I like having more of the bezel uncovered.

Trust me. I've done this same set up for the past 2 generations and both couldn't have came back in more mint condition. The back skin keeps the back in flawless condition and so does the front screen protector. Not one scratch on either side when removing both films of plastic.

Who needs typing with voice dictation? If you need the flap to function properly place a stylus in the holder. It will provide enough support to keep the flap stable.

New protection..

I have a gelaskin on the front and back and use this iPad 1 sleeve. The sleeve was a $100.00 but when the iPad 2, came out, it was $10.00 at Best Buy. I can keep the smart cover on it when I put it in this sleeve. The Incredible Hulk and other Marvel skins are not available though. I had this as my backup skin for my iPad 2 and did not use it until I got the iPad 3.photo 2.JPG

Dude, that's not my iPad. Its just an image grabbed from the internet tubes to make my point. I don't have a hair dryer. I just used some manly skill to peel and peel back the skin until there were not bubbles.

No pics, but black smart cover for the glass and a black incipio feather for the aluminum.

Haha, ok fair enough. The person who did that should be shot considering how bad of a skinning job they did with that great piece of iCarbons.

Voice Dictation for taking notes....wow, have they invented a mind-reading app so I don't have to talk out loud during meetings and conferences? What a great concept! ;-)

Regarding the stylus, that's exactly what I do to help alleviate the flap construction issue. But since I tend to write/sketch on my iPad with said stylus, I now carry TWO with me everywhere. One for using, one to fix the stupid design flaw of the Vuscape.

I fell off my bike a few months back and although my iPad 1 was in my rucksack it did take a good clout (as did I - broken eye socket......and I always wear a helmet before anyone has a go:rolleyes: ) which dented the aluminium back in the old suede effect Apple case.
In two years of ownership I never dropped it - because it's actually rather large and easy to grip - and the only damage was through a soft case and an impact from falling off a bike at 23mph.

Yes a full case would probably protect it entirely, but in my opinion that would be like wearing full motorcycle leathers on a racing bike instead of Lycra.

I don't want to bulk up my iPad too much, yet I want to offer it some dent protection that a skin won't..........hence the carbon fibre choice.

Where did you see this case at? It looks amazingggg haha

If you aren't being sarcastic, it's hand made by someone on etsy. I was looking for examples since my mother is going to sew me a custom case. Fortunately her's will be more of a solid cover for typing and viewing. I just typed in canvas iPad case.
I'm thinking of using cork instead since its water/grease/fire proof and you can just wipe it off. I like the look of natural fibers over the fake leather styles.

If you are being sarcastic, then :p to you!

Aside from the fact it is not at all bulked up in leather with a decent case, what does it matter when its not in use in your bag? You do realise its a fully fledged computer you're carrying in there that a bit of fashionably skinny shell will do little to protect? Its your iPad, its your choice but i think you're wrong on this one.

That's cool :D
We agree to disagree

It is MY iPad it is MY choice, and I'm perfectly happy with it.

As I said.........if I was anal about my safety on my bike I would wear full racing leathers, spine protector, and a full face motorbike helmet. But I live in the real world and take my own risks which involve wearing Lycra, various reflective things, and some retina searing lights to make other road users aware of me. I then pedal as fast as possible to get my training in whilst going to and from work.
If I'm going to take a hit to my back that is going to damage my iPad inside my rucksack beyond repair then you know what???

I'm gonna be a **** load more worried about myself than some poxy lump of aluminium and silicone I use for reading books and the web on :p

AppleCare + makes me personally not worry about all that BS. I'll post mine later.

I went with a Maroo as well. Love it, and their customer service is great!
