Do what thou wilt, but...

Thou shalt not f**k with the Floyd.

Seriously.

One of the very few bands that managed to maintain artistic control and integrity for as long as they did does not need to see their meticulous hard work butchered now just because it's convenient.

Chrissakes, we're talking about Dark Side here. It's like saying you don't care about the Louvre, you just like the Mona Lisa because... you're familiar with it. Don't be a philistine.

Sure, those arrangements you listed could be considered manufactured, but hopefully following the head would be choruses of improv. That's the exciting part for me, the spontaneous musical communication between the band.

Sure, I'll agree, some recorded jazz isn't special, in fact there is a lot of recorded jazz that I'd call bad.

You might be surprised one day to discover that Jazz is not the only place improv happens. And you might be more surprised to one day find that the percentage of improv in blues and rock that is crap is about the same as the percentage of improv in jazz that is crap, only multiplied by the sheer volume of aimless proggy noodling that constitutes mod Jazz, means you've wasted years listening to pointless filler, ironic or not.

Unless you're just another deadhead hoping to add credibility to your favorite bands directionless rambling by calling it jazz. Then you're just wrong.

Nope, known that for years. Improvisation was once an integral part of classical music performance hundreds and hundreds of years ago. I'd never say something stupid like improv first occurred in jazz music.

Didn't quite follow that ginormous run-on sentence, especially with all the generalizations.

Nope, not a deadhead at all. I'm not into it. Yes, I agree that the label jazz is heavily miss-used to describe all sorts of music. I'm not the one saying Pink Floyd is a variation of jazz, that was someone else.

All Pink Floyd is accomplishing is making sure their albums are sold as one cohesive unit. This does nothing to change how people will then choose to listen to them.

This is music we are talking about here (not french fries, pictures or cars). We've all listened to single tracks separately and albums in their entirety. We've even played specific portions of tracks over and over multiple times outside of the context of the entire track (had to include that for "drum beat guy" earlier in the comments). Their songs can be appreciated both ways, it's possible.

They may have intended for the albums to be listened to as a whole and chronologically, that's fine. Let your fans know that. Requiring the songs to always be bundled together as one package isn't going to accomplish anything.

What they may be missing out on is new fans that would like to sample out a few tracks before diving in to an entire album purchase. With digital distribution we now have that option to do just that. Selling full albums right now only makes the people who do choose to only listen to a few of their tracks purchase entire albums to do so.

I guess this means that we will see a few album only purchases appearing on the iTunes store.

I can understand that artists want their work to be heard in context but a lot of us sometimes only want to buy an odd track that they like rather than listen to the full 'artistic expression'.

and that is why they have released Echoes, which is a.... Best Of! :D
But since I only buy full albums, I'm pro "Album-Only" option...

This actually is a fun topic, this is the reason there is no AC/DC stuff on iTunes. Angus and Co. didn't like the idea of selling singles only, however they do release 'em for promotional purpose...

Pink Floyd is one of the few bands I would consider buying the whole album, their stuff was very well constructed for the most part.

AC/DC, no way I'm paying full album price for something that's 90% trash.

Come on over here boy have a cigar! You're gonna go far. Fly high you're never gonna die you'll make it if you try they're gonna love you.

We're just knocked out. We heard about the sell out. We're so happy we can hardly count.

Don't give me none of that do goody good ********!

New car caviar 4 star daydream
Think I'll buy me a football team.

Some of the lyrics I (poorly) remember from their albums. Glad they won this case.

Love that Floyd.

the thing about a great album - is that you change your mind about what the best track is.

'Us and them' used to bore me, now it moves me in ways only great art can.

Saw em in 89 and 92, and waters touring the dark side.

That is as good as it will get I guess now.

RW-RIP

Gilmour has said he wished he could hear it for the first time, it was made back when the mastering was a performance in itself. All hands on the mixing desk from start to the flipside of the tune.

Jazz?

Are you ignorant, or joking? If not for turn of the century jazz and blues artist we wouldn't have had anything we've listened too for the past 70 years...

Well after saying how much I support the Floyd in their "artistic license" quest for whole album sales...

I went back to my home iTunes collection and I have only two songs from Momentary Lapse of Reason ("Learning to Fly, "On the Turning Away"). For everything else I have the whole albums, either on CD or MP3/AAC.

Not sure why I didn't pick up "One Slip" at the same time... If I'm going to, I guess I better hurry! :D

In my case there were a couple tracks that I really liked that are not on that Album. What am I to do then? Waste my money on tracks that I have no interest in or worse, double dip?

PF, as all bands, have no choice if a "best of" album is released. This is entirely the decision of the record label. That said, the band may choose to be involved (artwork, track order, etc.), but they don't have a choice if the "best of" is going to be released.

Neverthless, only crappy music is best sold song-by-song. The crap the record companies are trying to jam down our throats' are manufactured single "bands" like Brittany and co.

No, that is not the case at all. Many artists that write really good stuff probably do not care about that sort of thing. They may right a single song that has meaning or maybe 2 songs together, but not a whole album.

I daresay that many artists care about people buying their songs period and going to their concerts - concerts that I add usually feature only a few newer songs and a lot of back catalog that the fans like.

If Pink Floyd wants to focus on the entire album, they can do so via the LP feature and make that an attractive purchase. They also need to realize that a lot of their fans don't care about this and offer the singles broken down. While I admire their intent, the problem is, that they cannot force their audience to agree to their mindset. They are trying to close the barn door after it has been open and fans are going to find a way to do what they want illegally if need be. It's just not practical.

If there is one thing that I think music fans cannot abide by the appearance of or the overt act of fleecing them.

I saw this quote on another site, and thought it was fitting:

"I just want to see the bull in Guernica-- the bull is funny. But the rest of it is too sad! What does a sad mother and a dead baby have to do with a funny bull? I hope someone makes an industry of selling parts of paintings soon."
