Awesome stuff. Still, the ultimate things I want to control from my iPhone are:

- Central heating in my house
- Turning the oven on/off
- Adjusting lights

I want to be able to control my wife and kids with the iPhone. When will we have an app for that? :D

This is cool, but to me, it would seem like an AppleTV would be the best choice to add Airplay to my entertainment system instead of a receiver. I'd rather see them just focus on allowing iOS devices be the remote control via bluetooth and leave the Airplay to something like Apple TV.

Am I missing something????

Sony audio receivers don't have as high a status as those from Denon, Pioneer, Yamaha, Onkyo, etc.

My current receiver is a Sony... it will be my last from Sony. I'm far from impressed with the quality at all and it was a more expensive model when I bought it.

Seriously Pioneer, only audio play back? The VSX-1021 is an AV receiver, which means it does audio AND VIDEO, so why can't they also allow Airplay video play back???!!

I'm not biting until they do.. ;) Although honestly, I already have an AppleTV2, and a nice 3 year old Onkyo receiver that suits me just fine, so I don't need to run out and buy a new AV receiver just to get Airplay. ;)

I'm a bit confused, does this mean it would Airplay videos as well? Since you need to connect your receiver to the TV via HDMI anyways. I don't have a Apple TV, and I was thinking of getting a receiver. Glad I waited if that's the case.

No. Just get the AppleTV2, you'll be so happy you did.

Can we get something reasonably priced? ATV2 and AirPort Express are not that different in price and are currently the cheapest options I know of. It shouldn't be that hard to make some sort of adapter for existing speakers--it just has to have an 802.11-n (preferably :)) capable.

Why all the buttons? They should have made it smaller, less buttons and relied more on the app. Overall I like the idea and I am somewhat in the market for a new receiver but I wanted to lessen my tech gear under the TV.

I wish someone would make a simple stereo amplifier or even just a pre-amp/hub type thing that'd hook up to a regular stereo amplifier.

I have pretty high end stereo speakers and I have zero interest in surround sound but I would like a modern receiver that'll handle any format of audio chucked at it, work with airplay and either directly power a decent pair of speakers or output a high quality signal to a regular stereo amplifier.

It's irritating as hell that nothing like this exists!!

+1

Although I do like my surround sound.. just not sure why the amp needs to be so monstrous.

Which is why I am still using a.. has to be at lest 7-10 year old amp. The options out there suck.

Apparently you don't know much about HDTVs???
You may not have heard, Pioneer no longer makes TVs.

Uh, is that some form of sarcasm? Any HT receiver can supply stereo output from whatever source you give it, doing precisely what you just asked. And if you want high-end quality, you can find that, too. Although most would simply choose stereo output from the source rather than wasting time with a surround processor to downconvert. Try this: http://emotiva.com/usp1.shtm

Use an Apple device for Airplay to add on. Although Airplay is hardly what I'd call "high quality signal". It's more for convenience.

~$500 seems about right to me for a mid-range surround amp with the feature set that this has. You're not just paying for an AirPlay amp, you've got plenty of other goodies built in there too including HDMI upscaling and upconversion of all video inputs.

If you already have a decent amp and speakers, you just need to get either an Apple TV or Airport Express and connect that to an available audio input. What you will miss, however, is the automatic power-on/input selection of the amp. Probably not a big deal, but nice.

If you don't already have an amp to drive your favourite speakers, the cheapest way to go is probably just to buy an Airport Express plus an inexpensive amp of your choice, but you wouldn't be saving a whole lot (figure $200 for a bottom-end amp plus $99 for the Airport Express).

She talked to damn much!
That crap will be thing of the past when Apple tv apps happen in the near future and all that Pioneer bloat is in an app and you control everything from your ipad. See you at the flea market next to the lady selling them Jamaican patties. I like spicy beef personally!
MMMMMMMMM, I'm hungry!

SONY is dead

Thank god it wasn't Sony.

Simply because SONY is dead. I bought the last good amp they made in 97 (VisionTouch) and soon after they laid off all R&D. Since then they have made only few incremental upgrades - mostly cosmetics. Just look at their NX800; its just about design - not the technology inside.

I replaced my SONY TV for a SAMSUNG 55-LED, and the SONY Amp will follow as soon as there is a PIONEER which can stream video ....

No it isn't sarcasm, I'm not an idiot audiophile with huge piles of cash to drop on such things, I want a cost-effective solution that does what I want at a reasonable price, nothing you've said indicates that this is possible with existing products.

I know such a receiver could supply stereo sound, however I don't want to pay through the nose for a decent HT receiver when i'm only going to use two channels, my stereo speakers are 200wpc @ 8ohm monsters so getting something that'd drive them for a reasonable price is impossible with home theatre receivers.

Besides, what do you mean "apple device" an airport express? I have one of those hooked up to a simple analogue amp and it doesn't support playing to it from an iOS device. An apple tv is again massively overkill as I have no need for such a device other than as a way of playing audio from a iOS device.

I'm not made of money, buying a decent 7.1 receiver and then dropping that much on a pre-amp just to make it roughly do what I want would just be stupid. Why exactly would such a request ever be construed as "sarcastic"?

What I really want is something like this http://www.harmankardon.com/EN-US/Products/Pages/ProductDetails.aspx?PID=HK 3490 only with airplay compatibility. Is it that too much to ask for!?

You're not the only one; no such thing AFAIK. I guess there's just not enough of us?
