This would be really great if they can do an update to existing units. I bought a gorgeous AVH-p4400 DVD player and within 2 months iOS 6 just wrecked a lot of its functionality. If pioneer could issue a software update to make it carplay compatible than all would be forgiven, even if they charge me for an update.

I would consider this since I'm in the market for an aftermarket receiver, but I'm thinking I'm better off buying a quality dash-mounted dock (ProClip) for my iPhone, and a high fidelity receiver (Kenwood Excelon) without a touch screen.

Pioneer already has the AppRadio 3. Theyv'e been iterating on it and it works pretty well. I think CarPlay would give it a boost. I've been considering it for my old trusty GTI.

I have the AppRadio 3 in my car and really like it. Though the apps that work with it aren't all the best designed. Waze loses power while using it despite the fact that it's plugged in and charging at the time because they don't make use of the much better GPS on the dash that the AppRadio 3 has instead of the iPhone's GPS.

Still a great product. Love being able to control Pandora and Waze from the 7" touchscreen in my dash. Though it would be nice to be able to multi-task and do stuff like shoot a quick text while the GPS still is showing on the screen. Currently, if you need to open another app while Waze is running, it will show whatever is on the iPhone screen instead, until you switch back to Waze.

Is it going to have shake to shuffle?

Cruisin' along enjoying a song *pothole* new playlist.

Oh, damn. Now that nice Sony with Bluetooth is going to have to be replaced.

Not quite right. It will run on top of a number of OSes. But it's still iOS.

It's an application from QNX that Blackberry owned or bought out. They just re-worked it on top of iOS.

This is going to grow big...but sadly it will add more to your car payment.

How? Does it cost more to have current Nav system installed from manufacturers? I remember BMW, MB or Lexus entertainment package costs more than $3k. With this carplay, you get a lot more than just Nav itself.

Uh yes, it always cost more to have in-dash packages installed. Have you purchased a new car in a while? :D

Hoping it would be invented to bring is CarPlay

If it is, it won't be until 2015. Pioneer releases their units at the start of each year around CES time and provides a very clear list of their units for that year. There was no AppRadio 4 listed this year, so there won't be one until at least next year.

Yup, my Bimmer Technology package costs >$3100 just for Nav/BT function with head-up display which I could care less.

This could be big but Apple will mess it up somehow. Like FireWire or thunderbolt or AirPrint or Lightning. If they require 3th party investments, they always screw up.

Explain exactly how any of the above Apple technologies got messed up or how Apple screwed them up? If you're gonna post a pessimistic view of Apple you should back up your statement please.

Not if Pioneer is able to make aftermarket sets...you can just replace the radio with an airplay one. Although I expect that won't happen for some time (if at all) due to the money the car companies would lose.
