so i'm guessing you have absolutely no debt, never did, and never will? Mortgage fully paid in cash?

with car loans so low....why would anyone blow all their cash at once?

hell....here's a 0% interest loan....man...those idiots!!

I've had debt, and learned it doesn't pay to wrangle with banks. Years ago about 4K toward end of school, 5K for last car. Basically for padding so I don't eat too deeply into cash reserves. But all paid off within the year. Nothing crazy like 3 years for a depreciating asset.

Mortgages are completely different. They 1 don't ordinarily depreciate at a rapid rate, and 2 show me a house in ATL near where I work that I could have paid in full for the $60k down payment.

There are plenty of decent rolling cars on the market for the $2k down payment for a fancy loaded Civic with NAV.

Eventually we will get aftermarket units with excellent hardware and with good carplay implementation. I would prefer to see good mirroring instead giving user full control.

I seriously hope that's not what this entire MR story is based on. Not to burst your bubble, but that's the most empty canned-PR response I ever heard.

of course it's a canned response -- but by management, not a random guy. yet it doesn't change the truth of the statement -- they *are* looking into it. maybe you're not familiar w/ Pioneer head units, but they pushed the envelope of iOS integration w/ the AppRadio series, complete w/ apps built for it. they have a closer relationship w/ apple than most.

so of course they're looking into it, and are not sitting on their laurels. this email, and this story, confirms that -- CarPlay may not be just for new Ferraris...

no bubble to burst.

so you are paying monthly payments, but a guy who drives a new car is dumb? you obviously can't afford your house bc you didn't pay in full :)

you could buy multiple houses for the price of your 1 house if you don't get a mortgage

you can choose to live in a beater of a house just like you're saying that everyone should drive a beater of a car. but hey it's different rules for you

Two representatives of major aftermarket brands have shot down the notion that you can expect aftermarket CarPlay systems coming anytime soon that you can install in your old clunker… and definitely not in 2014.

Scott Caswell, Kenwood’s marketing manager, recently confirmed that “Apple CarPlay won’t be in any of our 2014 products,” although many existing devices offer features like A/V playback and Siri support. Furthermore, Caswell suggested it’s possible that CarPlay will never come as an aftermarket solition, since as an OEM option, it’s an atractive way to sell someone a new car.

I must jump in here, I don't know why the hell you guys are flipping out and talking about random other s*** besides a damn radio the thread started out as, but if you buy a car are you planning on selling it immediately? Then why do you care about depreciation? Yes if you buy a $100,000 car it prob drops to $85 off the lot, but a $20,000 car? That does not drop to $10,000 off the lot, if you think that you're a moron.

It would be nice if they support it on my AVIC Z140-BH. Otherwise Siri works fine to send a quick text, make a call, or control my music for Bluetooth streaming. But it would be nice if it would work so that the voice command would be better than the one in the radio since it only works if I've had the map shown, it's slow, and it would rarely understand what I want. Although I haven't used it much since the last update so maybe I'll have to try to use it more.

That's my point. The phrase "looking into it" is vague enough it can mean almost anything. From actively discussing partnering with Apple, to trying to find a way to make your own incompatible version that doesn't violate any patents covering the original.

maybe you're not familiar w/ Pioneer head units, but they pushed the envelope of iOS integration w/ the AppRadio series, complete w/ apps built for it. they have a closer relationship w/ apple than most.

I haven't tried any of Pioneer's iOS integration products, but I have a Pioneer stereo. I love that I can play AAC files on it. I take playlists I've made in iTunes from different sources and burn the files to CD-R and don't have to worry about what format every file is in (generally, there are a few alac files in there ;) ).

I also hook my Nano up to the aux port and play over it. I actually have an iPod interface cable attached and installed through my center console (the dock end comes up into the armrest compartment), but I don't use it. The stereo doesn't support the charging standards used in my Nano (a 4th gen). I just get the "CHARGE AO" error on the stereo display. I can still play and reverse/skip songs on it, but no display is a real deal-breaker on me using that cable. I can hear the difference in quality between it and the headphone -> aux method, but I've also noticed that playing back through the dock interface really sucks the battery life (making the non-working charge feature more apparent).

So I mostly just burn to CD-R. I like that better because the audio is high quality and it's more convenient for me. I don't have to fiddle with connecting and disconnecting a device to my car when I get in it, or worrying about theft or heat damage from leaving the device connected in the car. If the heat ruins a CD-R or someone steals my visior disc holder (lol), I can just burn new discs. I haven't lost anything.

I'm actually thinking of trading in my 4th gen for a 2nd gen, since the charge circuitry would work right and it still supports Apple Lossless, and I don't really use my Nano for anything but music anymore.

I wouldn't mind trading to a new unit that supports newer devices, but I want a nice long display for song info (support for Kanji in song tags would be nice, too) and controls that I can use by feel without looking at my dash like I have now.

This is going to grow big...but sadly it will add more to your car payment.

What are you babbling about? This article talks about how Pioneer is developing an after-market solution, which means I can get CarPlay for a one-time payment of an audio deck and installation. No additional car payment.

I'm almost scared to consider how big Apple are going to become in the next 5 years. This, with the addition of a rumoured wrist device and TV, is going to take the market by storm. And of course 5 years' worth of incremental iPhone updates ;)

Agree! Imagine we use iWatch instead of going doctor, Touch ID based payment system instead of credit cards, Carplay instead of navigation etc. and iBeacon in museums, retail stores etc. :D :apple:

I don't understand why they don't bite the bullet and upgrade the Blue Tooth protocol.

VNC saw this coming.

Instead I have to buy a new head unit. My AVIC X920BT had one firmware update that gave me a crippled version of their App mode.

My iPhone 4S won't support CarPlay so the whole thing just seems like a cash grab. Just design it with built in obsolescence and change your car when a new version of CarPlay comes out.

They have to come out with a wireless solution or you know you will for ever be ripping out your head unit to change to the latest iPhone cable. You know.. that $.02 cable they sell for $40...

i've actually been exploring ways to retrofit bluetooth/ipod support to my 2004 lexus. Now with CarPlay aftermarket, I might just hold off and see what Pioneer has up their sleeve.....

Check out Kenwood. I'm buying a DDX8901HD this week, it'll work with quite a few apps including Waze.

Sadly though, Kenwood support emailed me that they have no plans of integrating CarPlay into 2014 products.

It's a bit of a piss off that Apple didn't launch CarPlay at CES when every 12V supplier launched their 2014 product lines.

As the NEX4000 is going to support CarPlay, I have since replaced my DDX8901HD with a NEX4000.

The NEX has phenomenal audio quality, far better than I'd expected from a Pioneer. Unfortunately the AppRadio set up is really kludgy for Lightning devices, requiring an HDMI and Lightning cable plugged into an Apple Digital AV Adapter then into the iDevice.

CarPlay will remove the kludginess as it will just use one standard Lightning cable. I hear from Pioneer that we are weeks away from the firmware update to support CarPlay. My Pioneer rep friend hinted that Pioneer had early access to CarPlay specs and have been working on it for a while.
