You can do that now with any number of single DIN units that have Bluetooth. I have to rent cars all the time for work, first thing I do is sync up my phone. I can control music, navigate, etc with even the most basic craptacular factory stereos. After market head units can do that and more. Just have to do some homework and find out which one is right for you.


Or someone could make a CarPlay receiver
 
YES! So so many cars have only single DIN available - why this market is still not addressed? :(

Because you'd be working with something like a 6"x1.25" screen in a single-DIN form factor? Maybe as low as 6"x1" once you add the complement of hardware buttons that these units all sport. (That's half the screen height of any iphone prior to the 6/6+ in landscape mode. You'd get 1 row of 4 apps, 2 songs/contacts visible at a time, a tiny sliver of screen for GPS, etc...

I get where you're coming from, but it doesn't seem much like a good trade-off to me.
