Probably the simplest and most obvious way to put it is: Pixelmator is a layer-based image editor. Kinda like Photoshop. Pixelmator Photo is photo editor with a focus on RAW editing specifically. Kinda like Lightroom. Obviously not the most marketing-y description but probably the kind of description most people will immediately understand.
As for the device cut-off — there isn't a way to differentiate between, for example, the iPad Air and the iPad Air 2, so in order to make sure that everybody who gets the app has a great user experience, we've had to set the cut-off point a little later than we maybe would've liked to. Compatible devices are listed on the App Store page and our Pixelmator Photo page.
Just out of interest, what was it you didn't like about the transition from the original Pixelmator to Pixelmator Pro? Bearing in mind the facts that, for App Store apps, there isn't a way of providing upgrade discounts...
Does this not work on iPad Mini 4, then?iPad mini 5 is supported, strange that it's not appearing on the list... We'll have to double-check this. As far as I know, it's possible to buy the app (or at least test via TestFlight) on the 5th generation mini and 3rd gen Air.
Confused by all these different versions.
I've now got all my photos and videos using iCloud photo library on my 256Gb iPad. I only want very basic editing and organising but want to be fully integrated with iCloud photo library for using on my iMac and iPad.
Which app do I choose?!?
Thanks
Is there any chance we get a Lightroom competitor for macOS? I've been making due with Capture One, but it would be great to have a true mac-like Aperture alternative. Also, that app icon is really really nice looking
Exactly what I was thinking. I have affinity and pixelmator pro but at the price, why not try this one out toi already have affinity photo but at the price cant really say no.
If Apple were to update the Photos app with multiple libraries, along with this app as an external editor, I can confidently say that I’d drop Lightroom.
I would not be at all opposed to Apple acquiring this company if they kept the team intact and let them do their thing.
So basic editing and organising is enough via inbuilt Photos app and this would give me personally any extra? It's hard to beat Apple's Photos app for what you describe.
Do you mean creating more than one library for use? Photos does already support that.
- Hold down the Option key on your keyboard.
- Double-click on Photos.
- Click the Create New... button in the Choose Library window.
- Name your library.
- Click OK.

This thread is about an iPad app...
Right, but the post that I was responding to didn't specify mobile as the only part of the workflow.
Why is there a need to pre-order an app that's delivered over-the-air? It's not as if they're going to run out of stock or you'll get it any earlier. It just seems like a way for developers to milk the release hype to get people to commit their money before they have time for second thoughts (or just lose interest) before the actual release - I can't see the consumer benefit of pre-ordering, or am I missing something?
I mean, it's in the first sentence of the post you responded to that he's talking about using iPad in his workflow and heavily implied he wants multiple libraries on that device.
Also, you can create albums within Photos in iOS to serve the same purpose in terms of separating personal and professional shoots on the device itself.
Ahh, fair enough, didn't realise it was discounted. It could be to create a hype, but in this case there’s also a benefit for the customer, since you get a one dollar discount if you pre-order.
How does this work when viewing on iPad? As in how would you switch to view?
Useless in the default view, and requires manual intervention for every single photograph.
