I have been a Pixelmator user for many years. This is great news.

Probably the simplest and most obvious way to put it is: Pixelmator is a layer-based image editor. Kinda like Photoshop. Pixelmator Photo is photo editor with a focus on RAW editing specifically. Kinda like Lightroom. Obviously not the most marketing-y description but probably the kind of description most people will immediately understand. :D

As for the device cut-off — there isn't a way to differentiate between, for example, the iPad Air and the iPad Air 2, so in order to make sure that everybody who gets the app has a great user experience, we've had to set the cut-off point a little later than we maybe would've liked to. Compatible devices are listed on the App Store page and our Pixelmator Photo page.

Is there any chance we get a Lightroom competitor for macOS? I've been making due with Capture One, but it would be great to have a true mac-like Aperture alternative. Also, that app icon is really really nice looking

Was ready to pre-order until the lack of iPad Air 2 support stopped me in my tracks. That’s a shame, as I do love the Pixelmator apps. Affinity Photo works well though. *shrugs*. I guess I’ll pick it up when I upgrade my iPad.

Pixelmator Pro for the Mac is great! I correct hundreds of photos a day and using Automator and Pixelmator Pro I'm able to cruise through my work. Plus, the speed of updates after the initial release of Pixelmator Pro was amazing. I'm very excited to try Pixelmator Photo on my 11" iPad Pro.

Just out of interest, what was it you didn't like about the transition from the original Pixelmator to Pixelmator Pro? Bearing in mind the facts that, for App Store apps, there isn't a way of providing upgrade discounts...

I don’t know how you did the transition so I’m taking this comment without any context but there absolutely is a way of providing an upgrade discount for people who own app A1 and want to buy app A2. You put them in a bundle at a reduced price of A1 price + upgrade price. Complete my bundle does the rest by removing the price they paid in the first place from the amount to pay for the bundle.

iPad mini 5 is supported, strange that it's not appearing on the list... We'll have to double-check this. As far as I know, it's possible to buy the app (or at least test via TestFlight) on the 5th generation mini and 3rd gen Air.
Does this not work on iPad Mini 4, then?

Is it possible to explain why...UX perhaps, or something else?

Confused by all these different versions.

I've now got all my photos and videos using iCloud photo library on my 256Gb iPad. I only want very basic editing and organising but want to be fully integrated with iCloud photo library for using on my iMac and iPad.

Which app do I choose?!?
Thanks

It's hard to beat Apple's Photos app for what you describe.

I agree that a third-party Aperture replacement (and alternative to Lightroom) would be great, especially if it could sync with iCloud across devices the way Photos does.

This gets very close to providing a successor to Aperture but on iPad. What’s still missing is a photo management system. A professional photographer needs to be able to keep their hundreds, even thousands of photos per shoot, separate from their personal photos. If Apple were to update the Photos app with multiple libraries, along with this app as an external editor, I can confidently say that I’d drop Lightroom.

In the meantime, I’ll buy this app even though I can’t use it professionally because I want to support the developer. I want to invest in the future of this company. I love how the Pixelmator team sticks so closely to Apple UI standards, so much that their apps look like they were designed by Apple themselves, — essentially what a native advanced photo editing app would look like if Apple were to make one.

I would not be at all opposed to Apple acquiring this company if they kept the team intact and let them do their thing.

@GoAndrius

Being a very happy user of Pixelmator on my iPhone, iPad and Mac I can‘t wait to get my hands on Pixelmator Photo on the 9th :) That said, how are the chances that Pixelmator Photo is also coming to the iPhone and the Mac at some point? I‘d really like that!

PS: Since panorama merging was already mentioned, this is definitely something worth considering (maybe through an IAP?), as currently there is no other app on the App Store that can do Panoramas (to my knowledge).

Do you mean creating more than one library for use? Photos does already support that.

  1. Hold down the Option key on your keyboard.
  2. Double-click on Photos.
  3. Click the Create New... button in the Choose Library window.
  4. Name your library.
  5. Click OK.

After what Apple did to Aperture, I disagree. I would rather have the Pixemator team independent doing their thing far away from Apple.

So basic editing and organising is enough via inbuilt Photos app and this would give me personally any extra?

Will it work from within Photos app as in open via it for editing?

How does this work when viewing on iPad? As in how would you switch to view?

I've read somewhere that having X amount of pics in a library can slow it down and splitting up can be better?

Why is there a need to pre-order an app that's delivered over-the-air? It's not as if they're going to run out of stock or you'll get it any earlier. It just seems like a way for developers to milk the release hype to get people to commit their money before they have time for second thoughts (or just lose interest) before the actual release - I can't see the consumer benefit of pre-ordering, or am I missing something?

Right, but the post that I was responding to didn't specify mobile as the only part of the workflow.

I mean, it's in the first sentence of the post you responded to that he's talking about using iPad in his workflow and heavily implied he wants multiple libraries on that device. Using a mac to have multiple libraries and sharing photos back and forth is about as useful as recommending he buy a second ipad to separate personal and work photo libraries.

It could be to create a hype, but in this case there’s also a benefit for the customer, since you get a one dollar discount if you pre-order.

He never stated that he only used an iPad. Also, you can create albums within Photos in iOS to serve the same purpose in terms of separating personal and professional shoots on the device itself. That said, I'm not trying to claim that Photos couldn't be improved when it comes to how organization is handled.

Useless in the default view, and requires manual intervention for every single photograph.

You wouldn't be able to switch between them on the iPad itself. macOS supports multiple libraries and whichever library you choose to designate as the 'System Library' on your Mac will be what the iPad would sync to with iCloud etc.

It does require manual selection, but selecting large groups of photos (like you'd probably be doing with a pro photo shoot) consists of holding your finger down with 'Select' activated and just scrolling up or down the screen on one side. Every row that you pass while scrolling gets selected. Again, I'm not saying this is the perfect solution for everyone, but it's usable.

Does Apple support external hard drives with its iPads? Since photos take a bigger bite out of the memory each year, it would be nice to offload them once ready. Great deals by the way :)

Will this support Fujifilm’s X-Trans files? What about TIFF or DNG?

Will Pixelmator Photos be able to download both JPG & RAW photos from a USB-C input memory card?
When transferring photos from my camera to iPad both Photos and lightroom either only see the JPG or RAW photos, I've never gotten either of them to be able to import both.

Photos are coming from a Fuji X100F if that makes any difference.
