Last night I tried doing some editing with Pixelmator iOS.
The goal was to remove John and Ringo from the Abby Road crosswalk.
It was fairly easy to accomplish, compared to when I did it in Affinity Photo.

I wonder if Pixelmator Photo, which uses CoreML will be even better.
I think it's worth the chance, so I am going to order it.

Do you mean creating more than one library for use? Photos does already support that.

  1. Hold down the Option key on your keyboard.
  2. Double-click on Photos.
  3. Click the Create New... button in the Choose Library window.
  4. Name your library.
  5. Click OK.

Right. I meant in iOS. The multiple library thing isn’t really meant to be used in that way. For example, it’ll mess up with your iCloud sync which is only built to work with a master library.

So basic editing and organising is enough via inbuilt Photos app and this would give me personally any extra?

Will it work from within Photos app as in open via it for editing?

How does this work when viewing on iPad? As in how would you switch to view?

I've read somewhere that having X amount of pics in a library can slow it down and splitting up can be better?

In your original post, you said "I only want very basic editing and organising but want to be fully integrated with iCloud photo library for using on my iMac and iPad." Photos by itself is quite good for exactly those things. It is a very good photo browser/organizer, and it syncs across all your devices via iCloud. It also allows you to edit on any iOS or Mac device and will automatically sync the edits across your devices. Given what you described, I would start with that, get used to the editing functions built into Photos, and see how well they work for you. Photos has more editing power under the hood than many people realize, and the Mac version accepts plug-ins (which allow much more extensive edits within the Photos app itself). You may not even need plug-ins, though, depending on what you're doing.

Pixelmator Photo isn't released yet, so I can't say for sure how it will work, but it is not itself a photo organizer. The way I suspect it works is that you give it access to your Photos library, then you would open photos directly within the PP app, edit, and save your changes. Those changes would then be viewable even from your Photos app. It's therefore a supplement to Photos, not a replacement for it.

Well, I just pre-ordered it. Hopefully it will not be a disappointment.
Integration with the Photo App is a must have feature for next revision. Hopefully the developer takes note of it.

It's available. Yay! But for some strange reason, at least on the iPad mini 5, it's not letting people download the app, even though when visiting the page it says the iPad is compatible and the App Store only lets people pre-order with compatible devices. We're not yet sure if this is happening with the Air 3 as well, but it's likely that it is. Anyone having this issue, please email me at andriusg@pixelmator.com or us at support@pixelmator.com and we'll get you onto the TestFlight beta for now, until this issue is resolved!

That’s what I was wondering. But No, maybe it’s too small.

It does have enough horsepower but there seems to be some sort of App Store issue preventing some users from downloading the app — our TestFlight version runs great, people have even been able to pre-order it, and some people have been able to download it too. Unfortunately, this seems to be out of our hands, but anyone who has bought the app, send us a quick email at support@pixelmator.com and we'll get you a copy of the app via TestFlight.

Either I'm a potato, or I don't see the denoise function.

Also, it'd be really great if there was a desqueeze function for when I shoot with the Moment Anamorphic lens, so I could restore the proper width of the image.

Really struggling with this app.

On the one hand it’s a spectacular image editor, the controls are smooth and respond with the kind of fine adjustment I’ve been looking for.

On the other hand, you can only import one image at a time, you can’t import RAW directly from your camera, you have to go via an app first (Photos, some form of app-based file browser) oh how I wish you could just plug your camera or card in and Pixelmator Photo could import directly from it. I assume that’s an Apple limitation but it’s a killer.

I do think the UI should push vertical images over a little when the panels are on the screen, there’s plenty of room, seems silly that the adjustment panel covers a strip down the side of the image while there’s a big grey strip on the other side.

I would also like to see a description of the presets - outlining the look they’re going for in each and what basic adjustments are taking place - it’s nice to understand the thinking behind image presets.

Until Apple allow apps other than Photos to import from attached cameras these apps are just going to sit in the unused apps folder. Which is a shame because there’s SO MUCH power available here and the best displays most of us own. If Apple adds some form of external storage access in iOS 13 or even opens up the image import functionality it’ll be a game-changer for high-end image editors. Double-handling data sucks. This app is great.

The iPad Mini 5 download thing is odd, although possibly not widespread...
I had no problems, although I didn't 'try' to download. I got the email from Apple that my pre-order was ready (slightly after midnight), then noticed that it had auto downloaded for me... it did say in the email that it may automatically download.

I think it would have been better if it used the photos library like Raw Power does. The files app is not really suited for photo library management. From my first impressions I like how the controls work and the ui itself looks great. And the auto enhancements seem to work really well too.

But overall I prefer Raw Power because of its non destructive editing integration with the native photos library and its ability to batch process presets. Still for now I probably stay with Lightroom on the iPad because I do a lot of local adjustments.

It doesn't work on the iPad Air 2, only on the 2016 iPad Pro and up.

The repair tool is not bad; very easy to use. Apparently just as good as the one on Pixelmator iOS, but the later has more repair options.

No integration with Photos app like Pixelmator iOS supports. Hopefully this must to have feature will be coming soon. Also, exif editing is important, as well as preservation of exif info if the user requires it.

I love this app.

I have a pet peeve though, the name ‘Pixelmator Photo’ is so long, it’s presented as ‘PixelmatorPhoto’ on my iPad home screen is an cramped font.

Too long imo, if they do release an iPhone version the header will get cut off as ‘Pixelmator Photo Recents’ is too long too.

Hopefully they change it like Affinity Photo and just name it as ‘Photo’ or change the name altogether, or else I’ll end up with 3 apps just being called ‘Photo’.

Am I missing something? Is there a way to select a portion of an image to adjust? Say I want to brighten something in the foreground without blowing out the background. The selection tool on the Pixelmator app was great. I can't find the equivalent here.

The big question for me:
Can you open an image from the Photos Library to edit directly in Pixelmator Photo and then save it straight back to the Photos Library without it making a duplicate (ie. Much like how Photos handles editing)?

If yes, I’ll buy it.

If not, I’ll steer clear until they fix this. Integration is critical - I don’t need to make copies of photos in different locations when I simply want to adjust an image in my Photos Library, but with tools that are more useful.

I bought it, and it appears that is an option. You need to manually select an image from photos and then there is an option to either save a copy or save it back on the original file.

I can’t see the menu, but is the selection of the Photo done from the Pixelmator Photo end (not good) or the Photos App end (good)?

The former is exactly how Pixelmator currently does it so I don’t see the advantage with Pixelmator Photo.

I want to browse, view, organise from the Photos App and when I see a Photo that needs editing, tap on it, select ‘Edit in Pixelmator Photo’ -> jump to Pixelmator Photo and edit the Photo and when I hit ‘close’ it jumps back to Photos and saves it as the ‘edited’ version of the same photo. Does it do that?

For some reason I can’t figure out how to post pictures on here....

It appears to be the not good option. You start in pixelmator photo, open a photo from a photos extension, them save it back to photos all from within pixelmator.

Thanks for that.

That's a real shame as this is how 'normal' Pixelmator does it and it's really irritating. If you want to do lots of Photo Editing it requires making duplicates of the images which then sit in the Pixelmator iCloud 'bin'. Waste of copying & storage and adding extra steps when they're not necessary.

When they get this integration with Photos right I'll buy it I think, but until then, this offers nothing over the normal Pixelmator. Such a pity.

Take a look at the Raw Power app, I think it has a pretty good integration with photos.

Well what can i say .IN my house I have Apple air 2 .and a Apple Air. Yes Two Ipads and one Imac and one iphone SO.
Here we go. New Pixelmator Photo has been updated . This new update IS NO GOOD for my two iPads.phone To out of date Pixelmator told me It will only work on new gen. 3 pads .My question is what right have these companies dictate of what you need for these new products. My ipad still updates from Apple data .and phone .Surely they can fix this greedy problem. And you MACrumors advertised New Pixelmator for ipads but do not explain what ipads you need.

It seems they are using new iOS features that only work on newer iPads. These features requires the more advanced hardware and/or RAM in the newer models.

I remember reading before preordering that Pixelmator Photo was not compatible with the iPad Air and Air 2.

Unfortunately, from a developer’s standpoint, making this app compatible with the older models would be very tedious if not barely possible. Even if this was accomplished, the device wouldn’t perform in an acceptable manner.

I have an iPad Pro, but also have an iPad Air 1 and an iPad Air 2. I use all three very frequently. I would also have preferred being able to run Pixelmator Photo on these iPad.
