If this files storage feature is Real, my next iPhone will definitely have 256/512 GB of storage.

What are you talking about, there is no FILES app under apple account in iStore on any of my devices.
7, 7+ , iPad Pro 12.9 , iPad Air 2, iPhone 5s .

Finally! I feel like that is the most deserved "finally" ever. Hopefully it has some excellent project management tools. Kind of sad to see that it's not called Finder with the happy little smile face. I guess they want to differentiate from the Mac? Or maybe it's because it has limited functionality? The Mac is what made Apple great to begin with, so I hate to see them abandon those roots. Hopefully this change doesn't make it's way over to the next macOS release.

Two things:

1. That folder icon is different than the current macOS folder icon which could mean a redesigned/refreshed macOS. I don't think Apple would use different iconography for iOS and macOS. In the current iCloud Drive app, folder icons mirror the macOS ones.

2. I hope they combine this with iCloud Drive. Wouldn't make much sense to have two separate apps.

Looks like hell has officially frozen over. Good to hear! ;)

EDIT: That's referring to the files app. I don't want hell to freeze over. It's useful for stuff. =|

According to Dantes Inferno, the middle of hell is already frozen.

I will be surprised if they provide real file management. Given Apple's recent track record, I expect it to be what you are hoping it isn't. We'll find out soon!

There is no such thing as "real file management" (sic), it's all an abstraction anyway.
With files these days being all over the internet, reverting back to a straight view of physical storage is improbable.

They'll tag the hell of everything and enable a "file system like" view of this for old foggeys that are so enclined.

Very unlikely to enable all apps straight up access to storage (will have to authorize access like all other resources on IOS).

Registering Apps to start certain kind of files is uncertain. It may happen but not in the way it occurs in windows.

This is happening. The drag and drop makes complete sense in the context of this Files app.

This will be really useful for people who are away from their Macs but are still expected to get work done. I'm not saying it can't be done now, but a Finder like app would make my life a lot easier.

But seriously can't we just call it Finder for consistency?

I shouldn't get this excited about such basic functionality, but sure, this might be one of my highlights of this year's WWDC if Apple doesn't sell us too short on the implied features an app like this ought to have.

Oi!

Which is why iOS will never be able to replace a laptop/desktop... too many of these gimped limitations to get real work done. I don't want to try and work with both hands tied behind my back. For the way most people use an iPad, I guess it would be a nice addition, but my wife is a heavy iPad user and she'll never care about drag-n-drop or file manager.

I think that's the point.. people like your wife have already figured out how to do what they want within the iPad's current limitations. This app seems more like Apple trying to expand the iPad so more people like us who expect traditional computing paradigms feel comfortable on an iPad as well.

That being said, I still prefer my MacBook anyday, but I would LOVE the iPad to be more capable when I am using it.

Yeh, like if they produced a version of the iPad running MacOS, OR, if they produced a MacBook with touch and the ability to fold away the keyboard or remove it?

People are excited that the operating system now allows them to browse files.

Which is funny. People were saying file manager is bad idea and it is bonded to be replaced.

Apple slapped these people hard.

It is funny that see Apple fan got excited for a feature that on Android since forever

I don't see how a file manager will be beneficial for iPhone users.

The only advantage this apparently offers is the ability to store files on the device when wireless is unavailable or data usage is a concern.

People still desire some degree of organization. They don't want to rely exclusively on Search to locate a file, especially if they can't recall enough details to describe the search criteria. Also, there's the benefit of discovery. It's amazing how much content you forget you filed, only to realize it while searching for something else.
