entire day of usage, mostly ipod (constant usage), websurf, sms texting. 25-30% battery left according to the meter. not bad not bad.

I'm sorry I got you excited. I don't get very long battery lasting results. I usually get 3-4 hours of usage. Mostly because I use the web on it.... Wifi is almost always turned on even when I'm not connected to a wifi network and Location Services are on.
LOL..

No biggy.

I am still fidgeting with mine but I have come to the conclusion that having 3G on all the time absolutely drains a battery.

I usually have to charge my phone every day, or at least every other day.

Well, at 3PM today it will be 48 hours since a charge just for having 3G turned off.

Huge gains.

My iPhone 3G Battery Results

After upgrading to V2.1, I did not notice much of a difference with my battery lifespan... it seemed to be exactly the same. So, after reading this thread; I thought I'd investigate and attempt some tests. I would almost always recharge my iPhone via the USB cable attached to my laptop, or my car... and then at night, plug it into the wall...

While using that process, my utilization is often like this:

But then, I decided to completely discharge the battery, and then use only the wall plugin, to sort of condition my battery; and when I did that it extended its lifespan considerably!! Check out this next photo, and I'm still not in the under 20% state!!

I have 3G turned off, location services turned off, and Wifi discovery mode turned off. I turn 3G on when I need it, and turn it off (if I remember).. same with the location services. I have two PUSH email accounts (yahoo, and exchange server), and 6 POP3 accounts that had a 15-minute pull time, but changed to 1-hour before the last test...

Im a little confused

Okay I know this is stupid but I'm a little confused as to what these number actually mean. can someone clear this up for me? I charge my phone every night starting at around 11pm and disconnect it every morning at 6:50am. The phone gets fully charged within this time frame. It is currently 11:30 am and my usage shows USAGE 2hrs, 24mins and STANDBY 4hrs, 41 mins... HOw is this possible? 7am to 11:30 am is only about 4.5hrs total so how can I have 4hrs 41mins of standby PLUS 2hrs 24min of usage? ALSO my battery is already at 50%.. IS THIS NORMAL? I've been texting for about 45mins only..

Standby is misleading because it is not showing you the stand by time.

It is showing you the amount of time the phone has been turned on since a charge and includes the usage.

How many of you people let the battery die after the update and then did a full charge? That is when you are going to get your real results.

mine's not bad

I mostly text, a little internet, and probably 30 min ipod and this is what I have so far. I think I'm satisfied now.

This is just after the 10% warning. Here's what I did to test it.

Wifi on
Location Services on
Auto-lock NEVER

The first 4 hours were just 100% Crash Bandicoot. (trying to kill the battery as quickly as possible by playing a 3D game).

Then the last hour and 23 minutes was using AIM.app (which keeps a constant connection to the internet) on EDGE.

Not too shabby.

Here's mine. The "been plugged in since..." was < 2 minutes on USB, to sync the phone. I think this battery life is pretty sad, actually. Other opinions? I also don't understand something: how come so many other posters have Current Period and Lifetime call times that are identical? Restored phone?

Turning off xxx for better battery

How much battery life does locations services really give you? I don't use it much, to be honest, but it's nice to have "just there" when you want it. If it's only an hour or so, I'll keep it on.

Also, what exactly does turning off "search for wifi" do? Will it still automatically connect to my router when I get home? Or do you have to do that manually?

Maury

I synced my iPhone and forgot that that would also begin to charge it! But this screen shot was taken at about 5%.

I must say today wasn't a very average day tho. I made about 5 or 6 calls, BT was active when i was in the car, played some Wurdle and checked e-mails. Oh and looked at one web page. Still, "stand by" time is impressive.

Ding, ding, ding!!!! That made a super, mega, giant difference for me. Getting crazy good battery life now. :D

As I reported earlier on this thread, I have had the same experience. Whenever I discharge my battery all the way and then charge it all the way up, uninterrupted, I find my next battery life span is noticeably longer than if I don't let it run all the way down or if I don't charge it all the way up.

Battery about 15%

Bernie, did you have location services turned on or off? WiFi? 3G? What type of usage? iPod, Safari, calculator?

Mine is pretty good...

Location services off, WiFi autodetect on, 3G on, everything else on. Still have about 25-30% battery, but I plugged it in at that point to synch up my podcasts.

Probably 70% iPod usage -- you can't get that much usage using 3G internet/phone calls.

location services off, push off, occasional bluetooth in car but mostly off, wifi off, 3G surfing + mail + some phone and a lot of ipod

I have NO idea what I did, but my battery somehow became the energizer bunny! As you can see with the screen, my iPhone has lasted for more than a day for the first time since I bought it (which was on August 23). This is with the location services on, twittering a lot, me using the GPS for about 30 minutes earlier today, and using Safari about an hour (but not at one time). I also have Wi-Fi and 3G enabled.

The only thing I can remember doing is depleting the battery fully. The funny thing is, I was talking on the phone when the battery died so may be I'll start killing the battery before I fully charge it.

I hope this isn't a fluke!

I had location services off unless i needed it, moslty ipod, with an hour or so of wifi browsing, a while of edge and 3G browsing, updated a few apps from Cydia and the app store on 3G, an hour or so of games (asphalt 4, etc..), and various other stuff

Maybe this will help some people. I have a few email accounts that my iphone checks, but even when I turned push off and just use fetch mode, my battery still drains very fast.

When I fiddle with my iphone today, I went into "advanced" in "fetch new data" menu, and found that only my mobileme account is set to fetch. My yahoo account is still in the push mode.

So perhaps people can check in the advanced mode to make sure all their email accounts are in the fetch mode instead of push mode.

I can't believe how much better my battery has gotten since I purposely drained my battery in 2.1 and charged it back up again. Look at this screen shot I just took. Here's my stats.

Wifi on
Location Services on
Bluetooth on
No iPod use at all
Lots of texting using SMS
Lots of AIM.app
Web Browsing
The screen was on the entire time (obviously).
Screen brightness was on 40% without Auto-brightness on
No calls
No 3G (Original iPhone)
I don't know what else to say... this makes me very happy.

Edit: This was ONLY the 20% warning when I took this screenshot! Who knows how long I could have gone from here?
