I haven't used Plex for 10 plus years, I think I dropped it the second they started to limit remote play. Jellyfin is my go to these days, use my Nas and Tailscale to get everything I need. I'm baffled anyone has actually paid for software like this that gets broken and unsupported so regularly.

I am not confused. I have to use Tailscale because I don’t want to open ports and put my server and home network at risk. I know how Tailscale works. I don’t need to told by you what I know and don’t know.
Thats fine you don't want to open ports on your network and Tailscale works without having you do that and Tailscale 100% works with infuse and jellyfin without opening ports on your network.

I was not long after that. I was even in the $5 a month category. Just the privacy issues made me very leery.

If I’m already using WireGuard to VPN back into my NAS and can stream my Plex media from anywhere in the world, what exactly is the benefit of Plex Pass in my setup?
Mainly hardware transcoding. But if you direct stream everything and have fast enough internet you would not need it.

Media platform Plex today said that it is increasing the price of its Lifetime Plex Pass option to $750, which is a $500 increase from the current $250 price tag.

Plex said that the updated price reflects the "real, ongoing value" of the software that it plans to build and maintain. The company has considered removing the Lifetime Plex Pass because recurring subscriptions pay for long-term development, but Plex wants to continue to offer it because it's a "valuable option" for many in the Plex community. For those unfamiliar with Plex, it is media server software that lets users stream their library of content from a device with the server software installed to any other connected smartphone, tablet, or TV. The Plex Pass unlocks features like server management, hardware transcoding, offline downloads, mobile syncing, remote streaming, and more.

Plex previously increased the cost of the Lifetime Plex Pass from $120 to $250 in March 2025.

Plex customers who previously bought a Lifetime Plex Pass will still be able to access the benefits and perks associated with a Plex Pass with no change. Customers can purchase a Lifetime Plex Pass for $250 prior to when the price changes.

Plex is also not increasing the price of its subscription Plex Pass, which is $7 per month or $70 per year.

In addition to announcing the upcoming price change to the Lifetime Plex Pass, Plex shared its roadmap. It is working to implement improvements to downloads like grouping by show, and updates to its mobile apps.

The Lifetime Plex Pass price increase will go into effect on July 1, 2026 at 12:01 a.m. UTC.

Reminds me of the time the local gym, let's call them Silver's Gym, raised the "lifetime membership fee" by $3 after covid. I'm gonna say it was not unreasonable given the fee was only $10, but hey, a deal's a deal. So I canceled and offered the same argument as why I was quitting. Their "customer retention team" (their words), said "done, sorry to see ya go". LOL.

Right because it's so incredibly difficult to forecast Plex changing their other price packages in the near future based off of this change. It's almost like these companies act all indignant, wait until the tumult dies down, and then boom! Suddenly they are doubling all their prices and removing the free option.

So glad I switched to Jellyfin years ago.
I will probably due this, when I am annoyed enough. I currently stream from a Synology and Plex went full r$t$$d MicroShaft and jammed down our throats released a bug feature to auto skip credits in a recent version. Only the moron developer coding it defaulted it, and it impacted all uploaded libraries, not just ones with names like TV and Movies. So its awesome to have to hit buttons to see the end of a sports event. And the stupid interface change.

I need some free time. I picked up a Shield 4K but didn't have time to set it up yet. From what I read there are a bunch of good clients to use with Jellyfin (Infuse, etc.).

remote play was limited only last year.

Totally not defending Plex (I use JellyFin for music streaming [discrete for iOS streaming]) but isn’t this the way of life time subs? While the app is small, incentivizing users in the beginning with a low price and then increasing it to a larger as the app grows? Totally greedy? Sure, but not a surprise.

That is crazy! I wish you luck!

Doesn’t mean we have to like it. There are good companies still out there that don’t do this.

The message here is, “we like money, but we don’t like money”. No way in hell I would pay that amount. I got mine years ago for $50, and I barely use it nowadays.

They don't want that one time fee. They want to tap into the Adobe style subscription model. Why not just end the lifetime pass altogether? Instead, they got a pr mess out of this.

I never had a use for Plex Pass. If Plex had said we're giving you a chance to upgrade for $100 to lifetime, I may have just gone with it. Instead, this lunacy has led me to learning about JellyFin! WTG! 😂

My crystal ball isn't working today, so I can't join your conspiracy. One thing I do know is that, at some point, ALL SUBSCRIPTIONS from anyone increase in price along with the cost of living. No crystal ball needed for that.

If you prefer free options, that is your choice. And for the 100th time, Plex is free to use with apparent free workarounds for remote streaming.

As an early lifetime buyer, I won’t be switching to something else as Plex works great for me with a Synology NAS, plus I really like the UI. Streaming locally has always been perfect, and it works great for streaming over cellular.

Plus, I really don't want to spend ages transitioning so many videos and TV shows over to a different app.

I will be trying Jellyfin, no suscriptions, and I only see my archives on my local network, dont need the streaming function. and wow 700, is plainly the price of a new computer.
Never understood the use case for Plex, Jellyfin, or any of the competitors.

I have a Samsung 1TB T7 drive, about the size of a couple of credit cards stacked, plugged into my router, which has the drive shared across my home network giving my MP3 collection and files accessible to my smartphones, computers (Mac and PC) and all my TVs (Roku and Sony Bravia have built in apps that stream from your shared drive). Total cost? $100 for the drive and I don't have to keep any server running.

What is it these software packages offer that make them better? Artwork to match your files? Why do I need to install any software and have anything running just to stream files?
