I was a Beta Tester from when it was a Mac fork from XBMC day... I paid $29.99 - ÂŁ18.90 at the time - I still have the email.

Ironically I barely use it now and pay for loads of subs 🙂

I don’t trust lifetime subscriptions to anything. Seen too many times where the company just changes something slightly and voids everyone’s “lifetime” memberships, or gets bought by another company or something.

I bought a lifetime subscription to SiriusXM when they brought Howard over for $500. Best investment I've ever made.

Dangerous move, especially with coding agents on the rise. I would imagine they are at high risk for being easily deconstructed and cloned to an even greater degree than they were before.

Care to elaborate on your post about not wanting to pay $750 to use Plex when you already use Plex and know you don't have to pay?
I've never paid for Plex in any shape or form but somehow I still have full remote capabilities via Alexa and Android devices. I don't want to pay $750 to keep that and won't.

Agree. I did however buy a Plex lifetime pass in 2017 for ÂŁ95 and it has more than paid for itself since then so I'm happy. I doubt the new increased cost will ever pay for itself.

I was gonna wait until Black Friday to get me their usual half off deal, but I guess not. At least my annual subscription got pro-rated and they only charged me $211. Have nobody to blame but myself: I've had an account since 2016 and only started playing with Plex for real like half a year ago.
I suppose Plex saw the wave of cable cutting 2.0 (people dropping their mass of subscriptions) and decided now would be a good time to cash in on that.

Ah!!! Some context sure makes things clearer for readers to help understand what you meant.

So tell me Plex, when you increased the rate not that long ago and pushed app updates that really improved nothing and really started advertising your streaming services and pushing Live TV, where did the money go when realistically you needed to update the base functionality of these apps? Apple TV hasn't had a much needed update in years, and the new updates on mobile are so bad. I feel that there has not been an increase in value and the service feels stagnated. This is just greedy. If anything this is an advertisement to jump to Jellyfin.
It’s called capitalism and it’s an outdated system. Either fight for something better or stop blaming capitalist companies to act in capitalist ways.

This topic is so blown out of proportion. People so angry!

First, the Lifetime Pass is basically being discontinued unless you REALLY want it, and if so, there is a price to buy it like it or not.

Second, none of the other prices are changing. Monthly and annual are not changing. Plex is not getting rich by this.

Third, Plex Server is FREE to use. If you want to remote stream your library, for $20/YR you can get Remote Watch from Plex and you're set. That's probably cheaper over time than if you bought Plex Pass $249 if you just want remote streaming.

If you are truly interested in getting Plex Pass and are freaking out at $750, then buy it now as the price change isn't until July.

I will be trying Jellyfin, no suscriptions, and I only see my archives on my local network, dont need the streaming function. and wow 700, is plainly the price of a new computer.
It still works fine locally if you don't need to stream it outside of your house.

no it doesn't. There's plenty ways to hate on plex but don't make stuff up. Also, please configure your plex server properly.
Plex is pushing its live tv and on demand streaming. Even if you have your server "configured properly", if you go to plex.tv in a browser (which used to take you directly to your server) it shows all their TV and streaming things now. Now to avoid all those other things they are pushing, you need to go to app.plex.tv. If you're using the iOS or tvOS apps, you skip some of that, but the person managing the server does need to take the time to turn off the extras Plex is pushing.

That's what the other commenter was likely referring to. Plex has gone from a way to host your media to something that hosts your media and their tv/on demand things (with that being pushed more because that's what brings them money versus people who are hosting their own media [that and subscription fees like this]).

Have fun with Jellyfin. Also, you are aware Plex Server is FREE? Where did you read it was $700 for local streaming?

Right because it's so incredibly difficult to forecast Plex changing their other price packages in the near future based off of this change. It's almost like these companies act all indignant, wait until the tumult dies down, and then boom! Suddenly they are doubling all their prices and removing the free option.

So glad I switched to Jellyfin years ago.
