Isn't another HUGE unknown the $$$ Cingular is going to charge us on a monthly basis? I forecast 2 years of a VERY high monthly rate.

I want to justify this phone but it's just too hard.

For me, it's a free highend BB from work and all the phone time and msgs I care to use vs this thing. I'm supposed to trade that for a $600 phone and I'm guessing at least $100 a month bill for use. Plus I get that added pleasure of no Outlook sync which is what I live on at work.

I wished they had made the thing a 100 gig video iPod with a few new features. I'm sick of the small video iPod screen during air travel.

There are hints of special rates here. More like Apple pricing. A few plans in a tier arrangment. My hope, and this is a big one.

Unlimited Texting and Data for all plans.
With minutes for each varying.

Starting at $49.99

Apple would effectively price themselves out of the market with plans starting at more then $60. I don't think they will do that.

I don't think you will be able to build your own plan. We will see though. I understand everyone wants to speculate. But getting upset and ranting about a product where only about 30% of the details are known is rather silly. I know there are things to hope for. Until more is known lets try not to jump to conclusions and except hearsay as fact. I see it all the time here, even in thread that are clearly rumors.

"I can't believe Apple, they are so stupid!"

Things like this. Based on nothing but rumors. Seriously reserve your final judgement til the product is shipping and 100% details known.

Thank you, now I don't feel so alone in this LOL. Honestly, both companies have pro's and con's. As an ex-Verizon customer and as Cingular has changed course and is currently rapidly improving many of its own faults, I have been pleased with them so far and am looking forward to its recent advancements.

I agree. I have used all carriers. They all suck in one way or another. I'm currently with T-Mo my friend has Cingular. Two years ago when I had Cingular they were awful, today there better than T-Mobile in my area. (DC/Balt).

You can find what Cingular charges for all their texting, voice and data plans on their website. Why would you think that it would be any different for what phone you were using?

If I get an iPhone anyway, I would never use the web or Google stuff unless I was in a hotspot, which still is very appealing. The charges for internet use through ALL the US carriers are simply obscene. I would say that, and the technology sucking anyway, are the reasons the US has yet to embrace such ideas.

according to the internet all phone companies "suck'

A google search on:

Cingular Sucks yields 739,000 hits
Sprint Sucks yields 926,000 hits
Verizon Sucks yields 1,060,000 hits

the list goes on and on folks... quit griping about cingular if you're a verizon fan so on and so forth. The US Cell Market is far from perfect.

Umm, it is almost definite that the next normal iPod will have this same interface.

You can't be serious though that you think it would have been good for Apple if all they did was release another slightly updated iPod in the same old form factor with just more storage and a few features. Apple has to keep pushing things forward, and that's what the iPhone does. And it is a sign of what we'll see in the next normal iPod as well.

No reason the bill would be $100 a month. Cingular's typical data plan for smartphones is $39.99, and the cheapest voice plan is $39.99, so it's closer to $80 (this is the same lowest rate you'd have to pay for any of the other smartphones, etc. that Cingular offers).

And there is some speculation that Cingular will offer some special service plan for the iPhone which might be cheaper, so we'll just have to see.

I also have to think Cingular might change the data plan rate for the EDGE network, since it doesn't make much sense to me that the unlimited smartphone data plan costs the same regardless of whether you have an EDGE smartphone or a UTMS smartphone.

That would be tough to get $60, but I think you might be right. Not sure though. Personally I pay Cingular $60 a month for my treo, but that is only because for some reason Cingular doesn't seem to know my phone is a Treo (even though I bought it from them), and thus let me add the regular unlimited data plan for $20 that is meant for normal phones, not smartphones. It would cost me $40 + $40 if the system recognized I was on a Treo.

Interesting method for doing representative polls. If it's true that cingular has the most people on their network, you could thing that they suck the least. Ii for one am happy to go back to Europe soon, where we have actually working cell phone networks and private open hotspots in big cities. Can I have a widget for the iPhone that logs in to every network called "Netgear", goes to http:192.168.0.1, enter "admin, password" as credenatials copy and paste the WEP key and saves it into my keychain? Thats 50 lines of peal and some Automator for the keychain, but it works nicely on the Macbook. Free High-Speed Wifi everywhere. :p

I'll wait for the 3G version, hopefully that's what will be released in Europe.

To get over 1000 VOICE minutes for 60 odd bucks a monhs in the US is not exceptional--- I tried that in the UK and Australia and couldn't believe the prices. In addition, no country that I have come across offers the same speed on the Internet for computing that the US does for such low prices. So these complaints from outside the US are odd.

What ? I am very angry about this American ignorance.

In Germany for ex BASE offers unlimted mobile internet access via UMTS and GRPS, unlimited phone calls to fixed networks, unlimited talk time within the EPlus net and unlimited text messages for 45 Eur/month- and UMTS coverage is widely available now.
I use that and I am very happy with this, I access the internet on the go regulary with a MacBook and a SonyEricsson 3G mobile.
You understand why I don't want a phone without 3G anymore.

And there are a lot of other offers that are much like what you said, 1000 minutes for 60 per month is really nothing special here (it is a typical price, offered by T-Mobile, Vodafone and others)

For home use pakets including ISDN, DSL 6 Mbit/s, unlimited phone calls and unlimited internet access for 40 Eur/month are also common here, and if you really want to you can get adsl 2+ with 20 mbit/s for 60 or so.

So stop thinking only the US is good in telecom things and don't consider the rest of the world as devloping countries.
