I used to baby my baby, but I've definitely slacked off over the years.
Still, my PB G4 is in great shape after 4 years of use. I don't take it out of the house anymore, so it's less exposed to abuse.
There is a small scratch on the top case near the apple logo from where my watch scraped it, but it's clean cosmetically and structurally otherwise. I have iKlear for it, but I don't use it but once every few months. It's getting to be time to give it a good cleaning again.

I have to admit I'm not as dainty about handling it as I was when I first bought it, but it's in like-new condition still so I if there's even a hint of endangering it I get panicky.

I guess you could say that if it got a slight blemish, I'd go in to a fit. I mean, I spent enough money for it, I might as well take good care of it. I don't see myself buying another one (or being able to afford another one) in the near future, so I gotta make it last. ;)

Interesting - almost a third of the voters put themselves in the obsessive/anal category.

Nobody considers themselves habitually destructive though... Come on now, be honest! ;)

I'm somewhere between option 1 and 2. I'm extremely careful and very minor scratches don't bother me but if the scratch is really bad or there's a ding then I stress over it a bit. Like with my white iMac, it has somehow managed to get fine scratches all over it while nothing but paper towels have touched it, but my Blackbook has zero nicks or scratches on it, even after being exposed to the claws of a kitten and a three year old

I will be brutally honest with you then: The slightest blemish on my otherwise spotless Macintosh would send me into a fit. Not a "The world is coming to an end" type of fit, but a fit nonetheless. I even put lotion on my soft, paddy finger tips prior to typing.

I have an iMac and I take very good care of it. I would get pissed at a scratch since the only way it could possibly happen to this non-portable computer would be under odd circumstances indeed.

I'm careful with mine, but I've noticed that there are some scratches on the bottom but I'd expect that really. The second time I ever used it, my nephew put his grubby little fingers on the screen and left finger prints everywhere. It was gross, and I was kind of worried about the long term effects of grease on the screen (if there are any). But I keep food and drinks away, eg, I put it away before eating supper (I don't have a desk and just to be on the safe side)

Sort of. When the MBP dents (seemingly the moment I take it outside), I get another one.

And I try not to kick the Pro, or at least have furry slippers or soft shoes on, when an app crashes (more frequently than in Vista).

sesshi, I'm curious - I don't think I've ever seen you write a good word about any Apple product on here. I understand that you might need to use them for work, but if you're effectively just suffering using them out of necessity, why bother participating in a Mac community forum? I'm not trolling or flaming here, I genuinely don't understand.

Well - like it or otherwise they're a big part of the computing scene in my dump and (more so) in my offices. I read a lot here and pick up hints on making the most of my purgatory. Just because these days I may consider them hugely overrated and substandard in some respects, it doesn't mean I can dispense ornery mutterings from a fully informed perspective - unlike perhaps many of the most Stevezombified.

I take great care of my iBook G4. When I took it to the genius bar to get the kernel panics fixed, he said "Wow, this is in great condition, you must keep very good care of it". And I do, never dropped it once.

Fair enough. :)

I would have to say that the first option is slightly biased...

I take very good care of my things...I don't get into a hissy, just cause something happens to my macbook...but at the same time, I take extra precautions that nothing does happen to it. :D

My powerbook is pushing 3 years old and the only visible defect is a few black dots on the palm rest from sweat...howevermy ipod is dented, pitted, scratched and stained. :p

I go everywhere with my MacBook, so I am used to the occasional scratch or blemish, but those are just those small scratches that can't really be felt, but can be seen. I only have 2 true scratches (both on the bottom casing).

Aww, I'm the only one who picked the fourth option?

Well it's the truth. Things that get handled by me often wind up in an unusable state. I try hard not to damage things, but my lack of coordination and horrible balance problems sort of prohibit that.

neat freak here. i try not to eat on chipper and i make sure there is no smudge or anything, and i try to make sure he is handled with care. cleanups if there's some dirt, all of that. i think he looks great compared to fellow macbooks his age (1 1/2 years).

the only brand new apple product i've ever purchased was the shuffle which is going on almost two years. it's still in great condition even though i take it everywhere and have even dropped it a few times.

the desktop model i use daily was purchased 'used' and arrived in decent condition. it also survived a move without incident. all of the other machines i own are old (OLD) and these too are in great shape for their age. i think they have survived at least three moves.

i've never owned a laptop, but i don't think i would be anal about getting it scruffed up a bit. i see wear and tear as a part of use and as long as it continued to boot up, i'd be a happy camper.

i guess this means that apple makes a fine product since all of my apple products have surely passed the dork™ test! ;)
