I do so I can get directions and find place to eat at. I never do work while I am on vacation. Last thing I want to do after working 365 12hr straight days.

I voted no, but really, it depends where I'm going. If I'm going on a "true" vacation, where I want to relax and not think about work, then I leave it behind. If I'm just going to visit family for a few days or something like that, then I usually take it along.

I do, but I'm never in a place to use it for internet.

Use my iBook, old Toshiba with Win. 3.1, (I have 3 or 4 others, just depends on which ones I can find while packing :p). to do games, writing and movies.

Yes. I e-mail friends and family pictures and updates of what I saw and did. It's also nice to be able to look up local info.

I make it a point to keep a cable lock and lock my PB to the furniture or plumbing to guard against sticky fingered housecleaners. It's not fullproof but my PB hasn't been stolen yet.

Could someone point to me where one would find the "lock hole" as I call it, on a whit iBook G3? I can't seem to find the darn thing...

I've taken my PB on every vacation so far, usually because I can use it for movies, and because I stay in touch with family and friends via e-mail. Also, I take a lot of pics, and like to put them in Aperture right away. Image editing is one thing I like to spend my free time on, and holiday = free time.

But this summer, I'm considering not taking it for the first time - just because it's 17", and it makes it hard to pack the rest of what I want in my carry-on luggage. I need to go through all my images, but I can put them on my iPod and use my folks' Mac to sort them. And I can use their computer to check mail. On the plane (trans-atlantic trip), I'm just gonna take a small portable DVD player for films.

The 17" is heaven for a lot of the work I do (translating, need to have two docs up on screen at once), but in a few years I've decided to replace it with a 12" and have an iMac at home with a big screen. It would be SO much easier to take the PB along if it weren't so huge.

Working with computers on a daily basis, one tends to try and escape them as much as possible when on holiday.

I normally take my PowerBook. But it's only 12", so it's not too hard to take. I use it to feed my internet addiction, re-autofill my iPod shuffle, check my email and keep up to date with my podcasts.
There was free Wi-Fi in the local library near where I stayed last year in Vermont, then i payed for 24 hours of Wi-Fi in the Hilton Hotel in Times Square, New York. While I was there, a baggage handler dropped the bag with my laptop in, and dented the side.

I take my PB and MB with me on every trip/visit, no matter how the occasion. I like having them with me.

I seldom watch TV. I do read quite a bit, and on-line content is a large part of that. If I am traveling to a destination, without internet, or poor bandwidth, I will download large amount of content prior to departure. I also have a 500 GB external LaCie I take. It has a couple hundred movies and part of my music collection. I have a MBP 17", which doubles as my entertainment center.

Why both? I'm not saying you shouldn't, I'm just interested to know why.

1. Because when I go away, it is normally with my partner. She uses the MB.

2. Because I feel safer having both portable notebooks with me rather than leaving them in an empty house.

3 weeks ago it would have been a no, or an "I'm thinking about it" but just getting back from one the answer is a definite yes.

I don't touch work with it. I'm on vacation.

But it is absolutely essential:

1) Nightly importing, and if possible cataloguing of photos

2) Keeping a diary or notes on the trip

3) Blogging the trip

Internet access is a non-issue. Nice to have, but I don't really care -- the blog posts I write in text editor then copy them to a USB key and use cheap internet cafes to upload.

2 days after returning, I have almost 900 photos imported, keyworded, rated, organized, and notes for almost all of them. A selection have been run through iWeb and posted for family already. It was all done in downtime at the hotel before bed, or in the copious airplane and airport transfer time.

Without the laptop it would be a month before anybody had a chance to see these photos!

I always take my MBP with me. I use it for email, uploading pics into Aperture, looking up local info, also sometimes chatting with a few friends how wonderful it is to be .... (insert fun/exotic locale here) :D. Infact, I just recently got the Tamrac Adventure 9 so I can carry my MBP, dSLR and a few good lenses. I usually stay in secure places, wouldn't risk leaving them at home alone in the apartment :p

Ever since my first laptop (5300ce), my laptops have gone with me on every vacation. I actually love my research, and love doing work in exotic (to me) and beautiful places. Unless I'm going someplace where there is no electricity and no internet, my computer travels with me.

That is a good example of requiring a laptop. A friend of mine did a work related trip like that to Africa and brought an old G3 iBook to do just that.

Most of my vacations have not lasted more than a week or two at the most and I've never had a problem with finding internet (in Europe) at some cafe or just using a friends computer - since I prefer to stay with people I know when I travel.

Somebody mentioned bringing a laptop to Japan and doing regular things besides email like posting on MR. I still maintain my opinion: on vacations, I like to ignore the world. And that may include posting to blogs for me (not that I have one anymore).

I usually end up going to bed tired, from walking, drinking, whatever. Never had the urge to do anything digital (except maybe fall asleep to tv) or even read.

Sigh. I guess I'm just old fashioned. I love computers and technology but I still find being tethered to them (psychologically) somewhat - disturbing is not the right word.....bothersome?
