I would absolutely love a 4" screen on the iPhone. As long as it kept the retina display. Watching videos and playing games would be so much sweeter. But they definitely need to make a UI change. I think it would look lame having the same icons, same layout on a bigger, prettier screen.

The screen is perfect for skinny nerds like Jobs and little girls. My hands dwarf that little thing. C'mon Apple, release a phone built for an American man instead of a Chinese girl.

I'm glad I'm a Chinese girl then. :p

But I'd definitely love to have a 4" screen too. :)

Hell to the no. I really like being able to reach the top of the screen with my thumb. My friends have an evo and galaxy and they are just way too big. I don't like using two hands for simple stuff.

4" TOPS... but never a 4.5

Like many others, I like being able to reach the top of the screen with my thumb while holding it in one hand.

You must have really really tiny hands if you can't. My 8 year old nephew can slide all the way from the bottom of the iPhone to the top with his thumb. And that is including huge bezel (not just the screen). A 4" screen would be a hell of a lot smaller than that.

4" inches is the minimum imo. I would settle for anything between 4" and 5"

I had an HD2 for three months and the screen was great at first, but after a while it was too big for a phone. I think the sweet spot is 4". After the HD2 I got an iPhone 4 and I really love the screen, but its size is the minimum I expect on a smartphone. It has of course many pros, like the way we can hold our iPhone and type messages for example. When playing games I miss a bigger screen. As I said, the sweet spot is 4".

Personally, I don't really want to see a bigger screen, if that means a bigger phone. My roomate has a HD2 and he looks like he has a video tape in his pocket at all times. It's even worse when he makes a call.

I mean soon enough you'd be asking to carry around a TV. I don't know about anybody else but I don't want to walk around with a TV on the side of my face trying to call someone. I think we're transitioning to the more power packed, flat screen version of this:

Absolutely Not! Not all of us are kids on this forum & we are actually professionals that use our iPhone for our businesses & business purposes.

4.5" Screen is entirely too large & the only bennefit that would bring is for watching movies or video games (Kids) stuff.

4.5" is far too big. I think the 4.3" on the Evo is too big. I do like the screen size of the Galaxy S 4" though. If the iPhone were to get larger, I think a 4" screen is more than enough.

I feel that this topic should be a poll of all macrumors users.

Before voting, take a look at this picture, comparing the iPhone to the HD2 which offers a whopping 4.3" screen size, and yet manages to be approximately the same size and weight as the iPhone, all while offering superior battery life!

From my experience, it's far easier to use the on screen keyboard, browse online, read pdfs, emails and e-books, and watch movies with an extra inch of diagonal real estate. Everything just looks nicer, especially games, websites read easier when the text isn't quite so tiny, and movies feel more immersive. It's shocking how big a difference that extra inch makes.

The front of the phone could made more akin to this...

or this...

It's not the thinness of these phone designs that is impressive, it's the manner in which the designs maximized the amount of screen space on the front of the phones.

Apple could continue to sell/manufacture the 2010 iPhone HD/4G for $99 for people who want that, and manufacture a 4" - 4.5" inch screen alongside it priced at $199 or $299 for everyone else.

Going with this size would also give Apple the room to incorporate a slightly bigger battery and thus actually would improve the battery life.

The numbers are there for any one to judge. 56% of the people here want a 4.5 inch screen, 38% do not. In otherwords, for every 4 people that don't want it, 6 people do. That's is a significant majority. And I'm certain the poll would be even more lopsided if it asked how many people wanted a 4" screen on the next iPhone.

No, this forum doesn't have ALL iPhone users. But what this forum has are the biggest most passionate apple customers and users, the users that not only buy apple products but go out and convince friends and family members to buy apple products. In short, this is a base of people that apple does care about, or at the very least should.

It's not only tech geeks that enjoy watching videos on the iPhone, browsing the web on the iPhone, reading ebooks on the iPhone, reading maps on the iPhone, looking at and showing off pics on the iPhone, all tasks that are made substantially easier with a bigger screen. I am willing to bet that a general sample of all iPhone owners would show similar stats, with most wanting a bigger screen that makes these tasks easier and more pleasent.

In fact the bias on this forum if anything tilts the other way. Lots of apple fanboys post here, and they insist that every decision made by apple should be kept as is, since the first iPhone had a 3.5" screen and a large bezel, all iPhones should forever have a 3.5" screen and a large bezel they argue. In addition, elderly people don't post here, but they do own a substantial number of iPhones. And they need and desire bigger screens that are easier to see and do tasks on more than anyone. The new Nintendo DS XL, the one with the massive screen, was marketed entirely to the elderly population that didn't just want but actually NEEDED a bigger screen. And it sold out faster than any other gaming device to date. So clearly a demand for this is there.

Like I said, apple has recently started to offer last years model of iPhone for sale alongside the current iPhone. There is no reason they wouldn't or could offer a slightly updated version of the 2010 iPhone HD with it's 3.5 inch screen for sale for that 38% while offering the 4.3-4.5 inch iPhone for the rest of use.

Normally I would not especially since some friends have the Droid X and it is fairly larger then my iP4, but the lower photos in the above thread make me think Apple will do something really neat to get a larger screen, we shall see what they do next year, but I am quite happy with my iphone 4 and AT&T.

I agree with most ppl here. 4.5" is just too big. I like the 4.0" where it can fit in my pocket.

4.5" is too big. The industry seems to be settling on 4" which is just about right. I have a fanboy in my department that thinks Steve Jobs craps golden ingots and whatever apple puts out is unarguably, unquestionably the most perfect product ever devised by god and man. He's completely convinced that the current 3.5 inch screen is all any human could ever want (even as he gets out his reading glasses to read the small screen).

I was flabbergasted that the iPhone 4 didn't squeak out a larger screen (which is also why I kept my 3GS). Inexcusable, but then you have to look at all the after-market devices that would have been junk the very next day if the foot print increased. I think that's why it kept the same small screen size when everyone else has moved on.

Currently the top sellers in the UK, Germany, Spain, France and Asia all have the current defacto 4.3" display. (according to CNET Asia) This is the same size as used on the EVO, Droid X, and a few other HTC phones sold in the USA.

While I like the features of my iP4, I greatly prefer the large 4.3" display in my EVO. It offers a lot nicer experience when typing as there is more room to view your writing and scroll the screen. This in addition to all the obvious like viewing area for movies, videos and games. Contrary to what many people assume, these are not big unwieldy phones. If they were, they would not be as wildly popular as they are.

I was hoping to see Apple embrace this current (not future) trend, but alas they took the old route with the iPhone 4. Not surprisingly since we all know that in the Apple Eco System there is a degree of fear & resistance. All one has to do is read this, and other threads were fanboy after fanboy digs in their heels and stubbornly holds on to the tiny 3.5" iPhone Display, giving a hundred reasons why it's the only size to have.

I do believe that just like with the MacBook Pro, iPods, or MacBook Airs for example, offering two sizes would be a solution. Carry on with the 3.5" fir those who like tiny phones. Then a larger model for those who use all the features of the phone and would enjoy not having to choose another platform to get the size they want. I'm all for a 4.5" display.

i love my iphone. i have a hard time remembering life without it. but i am also a big guy. not obese, just a larger than average human. and, therefore, my 4G, when naked, feels tiny in my hand. i am glad that my work really necessitates an otterbox defender, because for me that adds enough size that i actually feel like i have a hold of my phone.

i realize that i am bigger than "average." so that underlies the point that not everyone would want and or need a larger phone, with presumably a larger screen. but i would love it if there were a option for an iphone that was just as elegant and polished as the one today, just a bit bigger.

Are you trying to say less is more? How about less dead space and more screen realestate. The iphone has plenty of room for a bigger display without making the phone bigger. Better yet how about more than one model?

I would be happy with an increase that doesn't also increase the form factor, which allows limited room for a larger screen.

Using the iPhone with one hand comfortably is more important than a larger screen to me.

If they kept the size of the handset the same but increased the surface area with display I would certainly welcome it.

I certainly do not want a larger screen if it means a larger device.

+1 I switched to EVO and have had a hard time adjusting to the size. Great phone but I miss the comfortable size of iPhone when using one handed. Maybe I'll wait for the mythical Verizon iPhone to arrive....
