I say we get about 2 more years of life out of the iPhone 4 just the way it is. Maybe an iPhone 4S or something with more ram or something.

No changes for a couple years. That's like dog years in the cell phone industry. If everyone's still on 4 inch screens by then, Steve Jobs will announce the iPhone 5 with 4" screen touting: "we did it better!" (that always makes me laugh)

..and every fanboy here will pretend they never said they didn't want a bigger screen.

I think the screen size is fine the phone fits in my pocket perfect. If i want larger i would just use my ipad. everyone is forgetting that it's a phone. For years everyone has been going crazy looking to find the smallest phone to carry around with them and now people want to walk around with a brick in the pocket...

Since I don't think a smaller device is possible with a larger display, No.

I would prefer if they could fit the current dimension i4 display on an even smaller iPhone. Then it would fit even easier in my pockets.

If I want to see a larger display on something that doesn't fit in a pocket, I can use the iPad.

Absolutely! The iPhone display is way too small. The HD2 is a minimum of what I consider a sane size for a smart phone.

Steve

I was at Best Buy today and handled all of the 4" and 4.5" phones, and I have to say that every one of them seemed just too big. They were unwieldy, didn't fit well in my hand, and were difficult to use one-handed. I can't imagine carrying such a phone around.

By contrast, the first time I picked up the iPhone it felt perfect in my hand. And I can hold it in one hand and use my thumb to reach any part of the screen.

There is no 4.5" screen right now. It is 4 and 4.3" and then the Dell which has a 5" screen and is just too damn big to be a phone in your pocket and only displays the screen horizontally.

You are right of course. Which makes me even less understanding of anyone's desire for a 4.5" screen. The iPhone's the perfect size, for me.

Yes, we have to buy new cases, just like we had to buy new cases when the 3G came out, and now when the 2010 iPhone comes out.

And yes it will be a mm or two bigger, just like the HD2 and Evo 4G phones are ever so slightly bigger than the iPhone.

My point is, that mm or two is miniscule, and hardly noticable, but the much bigger screen IS noticable, and anyone that has toyed around with the HD2 phone can vouch for this.

OP. I have to disagree with you. I have an EVO and miss the size of iPhone very much. The phone is noticibly bigger and harder to hold. Just doesn't feel good in your hand like iPhone. It also makes navigating around difficult sometimes if Apple can increase screen size without changing the overall size of the device I am all for it but EVO size is too big for comfort in my opinion.

Everyone's comparing how much better the iPhone 4's 'retina' display is in comparison to iPhone 3s. No comparison, it's twice the resolution. BUT, it's not twice the resolution of the 4" super Amoleds out there. The casual eye will find it very hard to see much detail difference between an iPhone 4 and a Samsung Captivate (as an example). (I've used both and the larger screen and more vibrant colors of the Captivate make up for slightly less pixel density that you can barely see without a magnifying glass).

Honestly, my eyes could only see the better iPhone 4 display (in comparison to my 3GS) when reading text. Everything else looked the same to me.

4" Amoled: 800x480
iPhone 4: 960x640
iPhone 3: 480x320 (now that's crappy)

When I made this topic, I really wanted 4.5". But now I would settle for anything over 4".

If you want more then buy an iPad, a bigger screen is not going to happen, developers of over 350,000 apps would have to modify their apps to support the new iPhone (as done with the iPad) and this is not going to happen.

Developers do that already when making those same apps for Android. It isnt a big deal.

I don't personally care for a larger iPhone, and I'm not sure I see the business case for one as it is only the tech geeky who want something like that anyway (note: the market which makes the iPhone successful are not tech geeks). A 4.5 inch screen on a phone is just huge and cumbersome. I'll leave the big screen tasks to the iPad.

If the larger iPhone being discussed was the same resolution as the smaller phone (meaning images and text would be less crisp) then yes, developers would have to modify their applications. And fragmentation in the Android market, and varied screens, does impact app quality, stability, and consistency, which isn't to say that there aren't developers who have handled it well.

To you me maybe, to me the difference is much more marked. Probably thanks to that stupid PenTile matrix prevalent in AMOLED screens.

Are you a developer? Im guessing, NO!

There are many Apps in the Android market that are the same apps in iTunes app store by the same developers. It isnt a hard fix to make their app work on a Apple phone with a bigger screen. And an update would be for support for the bigger screen.

I mean there are Devs in the XDA developers forum for Android that get codes for Firmwares and make many versions of ROMs for all the Android phones and that is more difficult than adjusting a screen size.

Your making a big deal out of nothing.

For sure it needs to be 4", that is just a perfect and comfortable size, but still big enough to read good enws pages, and watching videos. 4.3" on my EVO is just slightly too big, but still cool, where as 3.5" is like a wrist watch, tiny small.
