USB external hard drive doesn't work anymore

After updating to 10.4.10 my MB doesn't recognize the USB external hard drive anymore. I'm VERY VERY frustrated. I just recently switched to MAC and it has already given me lots of problems.

Does anyone know how to switch back to 10.4.9??? HELP!!!

Hang in there

>> Apple will have an update to fix bugs but it will probably take a few days. I understand how frustrating problems can be from updates (been there) but overall I think that after your initial problems are corrected (Apple needs to improve their Q.E. process) you will find the mac community always willing to offer help. Macs are great for actually getting things done without the normal day to day worries surrounding PC's loaded with Microsoft crud. MacFixit.com has some suggestions for handling updates and issues surrounding 10.4.10. But you might want to just wait for Apple to address this ... I'm sure they will within the next few days. I'd be surprised if they didn't with so many having problems with this release.

All ok for me ... whew

I held off but just decided to go ahead and update figuring I'd be either relieved or joining you all. All seems ok for me but I'm on a PPC. I hope Apple addresses these issues quickly though for everyone having problems. I'm sure that they'll have an update out to fix bugs.

F**k this update, my firewire network was working fine before and its is unreliable now, randomly crashes, finder hangs,... happens everytime trying to connect to a firewire network.

Half of my menu bar has disappeared in some apps but I don't know whether it's related to 10.4.10 (I've seen it before, but not for several months). A reboot should fix it.

Edit: Indeed, rebooting fixed it but I'll update this post if it happens again.

Ive been using it since the day it came out w/o any problems. This was on top of a 1 day old fresh install of 10.4.9 though.

Spotlight partly disabled

On my iMac G5, Spotlight can't find all of my files/programs anymore. e.g. I once installed an emulator called Dosbox. I wanted to remove it, so tried to find all of the .plist and other supplementary files using Spotlight. No results, while the app positively is on my hard disk. Apple-F (Find) has the same issue.

After starting Dosbox and shutting it down, Spotlight was able to find it again, akthough only the app itself is found...

When I installed the Intel version on my Mac Pro and restarted, OS X failed to boot properly, and auto-restarted a second time before finally loading properly.

That's normal; it reboots so that it can update system files and then reboots again to actually *use* those updated files.

Yeah, that makes sense. But I don't remember it every doing that on any of the other updates to tiger. It freaked me out and held my breath until it did boot all the way.

I remember two reboots happenining when I ran the 10.4.9 update on my MBP and my iMac.

So far no problems running the 10.4.10 update on my iMac and MBP. *crosses fingers*

As with most others, I'm having the (frightening when on max volume) speaker pops. My heart attack will be on your hands, Apple!

I had about the most minor issue possible on my iBook after updating: My About This Mac, logout, and shutdown confirmation windows were appearing off-screen. I could still interact with them via the keyboard, but they were nowhere to be seen. A quick logout/login fixed things.

I'm not sure if its the 10.4.10 update or something else on my SR MBP but i've been having sleep issues now (not me, the MBP). I regularly put my compy to sleep when i am on the go or traveling between home>train>work>around office and latley when i've opened the lid to wake it back up, my password prompt does not appear just a black screen. I've tried waiting for the screeen saveer to flick back on then move the trackpad or alternativley, close the MBP and open it up after a few minutes but to no avail.

However my iBook that i also use mainly now around the has not had the same issue since the update so i'm not sure if it was the update or not.

Since updated to 10.4.10 my Garmin USB GPS 18 device no longer works (via GPS babel).

Right before I was about to launch the project, now I am scrambling to get it running on Windows (which is painful).

I have to change my original vote. I think it's the 10.4.10 Update that's causing this same issue. My PB G4 on airport, after sleeping, is off the internet, and I can't get back on without resetting configurations and reentering WEP information. My wife's iBook G4 with the same updates has no issues.

Probably not a bad idea. The speaker pop is very sporadic but annoying. Enough to steer clear of the update, but it seems to be a rare issue at the moment.
The issue actually appears to be fairly common on Intel Macs. It apparently has to do with a change in the power management scheme in AppleHDA.kext wherein audio goes to sleep and wakes up on a different schedule than the rest of the machine. There's a solution that can be applied via the terminal by replacing AppleHDA.kext in 10.4.10 with AppleHDA.kext from 10.4. It doesn't appear it will hurt anything, just annoying.

I wonder if i reinstall back to 10.4.9 all of these problems will go away, has anyone try that ? From what i have read, there are some problems still exist even you roll back to 10.4.9. Is this true ?

Did the 2 updates on my C2D MBP 10.4.10 & some security update. No problem. Although I did boot off the DVD and did a HDD check and a permissions repair first.

10.4.10 turned into a weekend of hell for me. My 10.4.9 Mac Pro was updated the morning after release. Installed first time, no issues. However, it then hard crashed continually (not even being caught by the kernel panic screen).

I've had to reformat, and install from DVD, i'll update to 10.4.9 again soon, once I've gained confidence that everything is ok again.

Since going back to .9 i've not had a single crash.

My Mac pro is fine and had no (new) issues since updating.
My Macbook pro on the other hand stopped mounting my USB drives, it got so bad I had to go back to 10.4.9 *sigh*
