I'm still a little confused. If I archive and install, will my music be in the new Leopard music folder or the Previous System folder? And if I open iTunes will the music already be there, or will I have to readd everything to the library? Also, what about my other personal data. For example, when I archive and install, will my desktop still have all the files it had in Tiger or will the files be in the Previous system folder?

So even though I am going to, I technically don't really have to backup my personal data for archive and install?

/Users isn't /System or /Library.

Haha, I think I understand what you mean, but so YES all my personal files such as music where be where I left them if I do Archive and Install?

I had voted for erase and install but ended up going with the archive and install. I was a little scared after it was installed because everything seemed to be a little laggy. Thankfully, I believe it was just spotlight re-indexing because everything is extremely smooth now.

How long does Spotlight take to reindex? I am kind of laggy. Has been about 10 minutes so far

It's 2007. Computers are fast. It won't matter.

I took your advice and did the Archive and Install. For the reason you said, and the fact that my 90+ GB backup didn't complete, so Erase and Install wasn't an option. I know it was crazy to Archive and Install WITHOUT a backup, but it turned out OK.

I always do an erase and install, no matter what. I feel better knowing it's a clean installation.

You know, the great thing about Leopard is that you can do an Archive and Install, use Time Machine, then, if you want things snappier, you can always go the Erase and Install route and use your Time Machine backup to restore your files. Of course, with Time Machine, there's no reason to do an Archive and Install the next time (Lynx? Cougar?) :apple::cool:

I did an erase install but semi-regret it or think perhaps I'll just clean my computer as best as possible and do an upgrade next time.
I'm a newbie at this and most everything went flawlessly, but had issues getting back my iPhoto/iTunes from my external back in properly. This was only cuz of ignorance on my part in not locating things properly/right positions/chains, etc.

IDK what I'll do next time. I guess I'd like to know exactly how the "upgrade" works on the system and how much it cleans things out. perhaps it's more than I realize, IDK.

I went with 'Upgrade' in the end myself. There's always a bunch if 'iSheep' on these forums that forever say how wonderful Apple is and that there's no need to do anything else. So....I thought I'd test their ideas out!

The result?!

I'll backup to my external drive later, format it and put a clean install on later! ;)

ExataMundo NetDog! The Old System folder is called "Previous System". Delete it after the process is complete. It's the best of both worlds. You have a new system, but with all your familiar settings retained. It doesn't "Backup" anything. It just leaves everything where it is now. It RETAINS all your Photos, Music & Movies if that's what you're asking.

Every time I delete "Previous System" (drag to trash or delete in finder) it ends up not being deleted, it never goes in the trash. I seem to be stuck with it.

It installs a new system and retains all your current preferences, settings and licenses. I called Adobe just now and they said with Archive & Install your CS3 will work fine after the upgrade to Leopard.

Actually it doesn't. When I invoke CS3 after an archive and install, I get a warning window telling me something's wrong and to reinstall the product. Unfortunately it's Sunday and my CS3 disk is at the office.

if i do an archive and install, do I need enough hard drive space to double what i have currently on my hard drive?

Lets say my hard drive has 80gb of data on it, do i need an 160gb hard drive to do the archive and install?

You might need around ~10 GB but not double your current used space.

I highly DO NOT recommend a simple Upgrade. It got me a blue screen, so I ended up doing an Archive & Install... everything's perfect.

I am about to install leopard today. I want to do a clean install, not an archive, nor an upgrade. When I used to format my HD and re-install Tiger I would just copy my home folder over to a portable HD, reinstall, and then drag my home folder back to my laptop. Will this work with Leopard? I don't need any apps, just my music, movies, docs, photos...etc.
