Three options, I can see...
This will either be the new eMac, and called such... Steve Jobs has already said that CRTs are dead, so maybe he wants them out of the the Mac lineup? The machine is perfect for the education matket. For a lab full of machines that are lined up on table tops, these would be preftect... leave the monitors in place, and strap the CPU to the underside of the desktop, so you are using either desktop or floor space for them. Of course if it is a new eMac, I would expect an upgrade in parts, too, not a 1.25ghz CPU still...

Or if it is a new system line, then the idea of callign it simply Machintosh G4 as posted above would be good. It's simple, clean, easy to remember and identify with, like this machine is supposed to be.

Or they will come up with something stupid and cutesy. The name iPod sounded stupid to me when I first heard it, but after having it repeated 1,000,000 it has become just another word...

Looks to me like the long name "Macintosh" is gone for good. They're all "Mac" now, and have been for some time. Doubt it will be the "LC IV"; I'd vote for "iMac mini".

(edit) Of course it could be "Pippin II"...

The name should not have anything pod in it. IT IS NOT AN IPOD. Its a computer, running osx, hands down. Maybe something like "MyFirstMac", or "iMac Jr.", or "eMac jr.".

Well, that would be a HUGE turn off for people like me. I don't consider myself Junior and it's not my first Mac. It's like a 30 year old buying a red, yellow, blue roundish My First Sony walkman - do they still use that name by the way?

And I wouldn't be surprised if they somehow connected the iPod image/name with this machine, as they are likely catering to the iPod users with this machine.

i think iMac mini. why not? it's not a full fledged iMac, and it's supposed to get people to switch over, isn't it? iMac mini. perfect name.

(i also like Lisa Remix :p )

I think it needs to be kid/teen oriented. Cause the main point of this computer is to sync with the ipod, and go on AIM/safari, which kids like to do. THis computer is gonna go in the kids room so the parents can have their Imac and little John-y can have his computer to talk to his friends....
its gonna be related to the ipod some-how. and expect more U2 verigo or the walkie talkie man song commericals to sell this product

Do you think they will come in colors to match the mini? Just imagine a pink Mac in your daughters room !!!

I'd say because it isn't any type if iMac, a name which has been defined by a computer with a monitor built in... Besides, this would water down the iMac name, which is actually associated with elegance and expense these days...

An iMac mini would be just like the current iMacs, but with a 4 inch screen! (actually, that's not too far off from the color iPods!) ;)

Lé Macintösh
?
iMaMac (I'm a Mac-- get it?)

I think that this won't replace the eMac, because the eMac is simply a great computer for those who do not need a G5, don't need a 17" or 20" screen, and just want a basic computer to use. It is also an all-in-one, which is really really nice so that you don't need to have a tower, monitor, and anything else hanging off of it. This might just be called "eMac (no monitor included)" or something like that.

i agree with this, because i think even adding 'mini' to the end of iPod was a stretch for apple. a company so minimal in everything from their cooperate appearance to there product design isnt about to put miniMac or myMac or anything along those lines in there product line up. clean. simple. easy, and of corse made of white polycarbonate plastic is the apple way.

Awful idea. 99% of the people who buys these will be adult Mac users who've been looking to upgrade an aging component system or adult PC users who've been waiting for an affordable entry point mac.
Thats an opinion. How old are you? Im assuming you are in ur 30's-40's. Your comment is biased ;)

opinions on current names that are out there:
iHub - possible but sounds a little too industrial/harsh. Not a smooth name.

XXX iMac or iMac XXX- this isn't an iMac. It won't be named after one. Since the cube, steve jobs has realized that it is essential to draw clear lines between the intended markets for all computers. The iMac is a consumer level all in one. It may have evolved into a pricy consumer level machine, but @ w/ a 17" screen it definitely is within the budget of a lot of computer users.

XXX Pod or Pod XXX- I initially thought it likely that apple would play off the ipod since this appears to be aiming at the same market as the ipod is, but then I started thinking about why the ipod is called the ipod - Pod suggests small, highly portable (more so than a "book") and capable of carrying all you need for survival (see escape pod). This is not going to be a "Pod".

XXX eMac or eMac XXX- makes no sense for the same reasons as the iMac. The eMac is an ugly machine for those on a short budget who aren't really concerned about looks. It doesn't have any of the glamour that the ipod and imac have.

So that means that this is going to have a completely new name. I would say maybe iBox, but that sounds a little too much like xbox. Info on this suggests that the machine is really going to be focused on media - it may have video out. It may eventually have a built in ipod connector. This is a computer for people who aren't computer users - people who just use computers to manage their photos, video, music, web, email. It is going to be more of an appliance with a much more focused purpose than any other computer that came before it.

iHub or iCenter starts to make more sense now, but I still don't like the ring to those names. They aren't glamourous enough. Also, the 'i' stands for internet and as discussed, the internet is no longer the hot thing. Apple MediaCenter sounds good except it sounds a little microsoft. Something about bringing all your media to one place.... what could it be??? hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm---------- Apple Focus? that's already a car. Apple Home? Maybe Apple Link? I don't know. I give up.

Just hit 40 10 days ago! Biased indeed, because I spent years waiting for Apple to introduce a machine like this to replace my aging beige G3 minitower. I had a great monitor and all the peripherals I needed. iMacs were redundant and PowerMacs were overkill.

Eventually went with an iBook and have it spanned to an external monitor 95% of the time, because I reasoned that if Apple didn't offer what I needed or wanted, then I'd have to add a twist that made my needs fit within one of their offerings... - j

OS X seems to be the other thing that brings all this together so maybe it will be the XFocus or the XCenter.

I think something elegant- I like "Macintosh G4"

or simply: Macintosh.

Mac Light or mac-lite

the mac box (or ibox)

it'll probably be "mac - whatever it looks like..."

nothing too cutesy if they are trying to persuade PC users to switch-

Performa! allways use a name that is opposite of what it gives. learned this from the current Bush administration, clean air act, no child left behind and other great one liners.

Maybe co-branding with Mattel: the Barbie Mac (in pink) and the Hot Wheels Mac (with flames & chrome).

CoolMac - you are what you compute on.

cMac - a name we used to use to identify this concept. C stands for "compact", "cheap", ... "cool"

:( iBox is sounding better all the time...

This is going to be the new eMac. If this comes out, there's no reason to have an eMac anymore. Its outdated and if it get updated to the G5 it will KILL iMac sales just like it did before because it will have basically the same specs for a cheaper price. There's no need for the eMac model anymore. Its extremely FUGLY anyways and very, very outdated.

The eMac will drop back down to only educational customers just it should of been in the first place.

who else wants an eBook then? wouldn't it make sense? it seems that eMacs are truly consumer, iMacs and iBooks are prosumer, and PowerMacs and PowerBooks are obviously pro. or, would said hypothetical eBook kill iBook sales?
