As has been said, it's not an iMac, and it won't be targeted at the iMac market... so I highly doubt it will be a play on any iMac name.

I doubt it will be an "express"... that implies more portability than this will have.

And while they will certainly want to draw iPod comparisons, I'm not sure it'll be a pod. The marketing will attempt to draw connections to the iPod, so there will need to be a hook, but this could simply be the appearance, not the name.

The best post I've seen so far said it would be the new eMac. If true, this machine will certainly target the eMac market, and it does stand to reason that the eMac could be killed off. It's always been the misfit of the product line, existing only to provide a lower price point to hold onto the education market. This would easily grab the edu market better, and I could see it taking the place of the eMac entirely.

And it WON'T be named "junior" or anything, because even when you throw in the educational market, the under-18 folks are only about 25% of Apple's focus right now. Junior would be a huge turnoff for the adult switchers who they want.

As for codename, I would bet on "halo", as it appears that this Mac exists to tap the iPod's switcher halo...

vMac = value Mac

Why not? If iMac was originally for "internet Mac" and eMac was "education Mac"...

Just a random guess.

Being apolitical is a political choice, too. I, for one, don't want to hear your "too cool to care" anti-political horse*** anywhere in my life.

Wrong, jesuscandle. DHM's original post was demonstrably false political propaganda - a partisan lie. Objecting to lies is a good thing, and I concur. Furthermore, political posts are against the rules of this forum.

the iNames started as internet, but then it was just a clever naming scheme. i suppose interactive could be it, especially iBook.

This "i" naming scheme is getting pretty dated, like starting names with "e". Yes, I get it now. We use these "electronic"-"computer" things to get on the "internet". It's a shame Apple has so much invested in the successful iPod name, I'm guessing the most successful of all iItems... Good GOD man... Where is the CREATIVITY?!!! :D

The "i" originally stood for "Internet" -- the iMac G3 was designed to make Internet use relatively handy and worthwhile -- but appears to have shifted meaning to the first-person English pronoun (nominative case).

What am I missing here? People continue to cite iMac something, when the iMac has been defined by having a built in monitor. Since this is clearly not the case, what's the reasoning behind this choice?

You must have missed my last post. I explained completely why it is logical. Let go of the "iMac name = All in one" and trade it for "iMac G5 = iPod designer" like Apple is pushing with the posters.

Now take the iPod Mini and do the same thing. "iMac mini. From the designers of the iPod mini."

Didn't miss it. Just don't think it's logical! :D

Letting go of "iMac name = All in one" is like letting go of "dark = absence of light". It's just how it's always been defined. Changing the definition isn't logical, but that's not to say Apple wouldn't do it. It IS their name. They can do whatever they want. I'm just hoping for something a little more inspired.

If this DOES come to fruition, I'm more interested as to HOW they're going to market it. What makes it a BETTER product than the iMac? Smaller isn't enough. The iBook is small. What's the ANGLE? Is it the "hiMac"? An introduction to the world of Macintosh? How bout "The Cub" (the smallest of the Tiger family)? ;)

We'll find out soon enough. I just hope there actually IS one of these beasties...

Apple doesn't do things unless they have perfectly discrete purpose - a completely different and new market. People do hedge between the three desktop levels of apple's, but it cannot be argued that the angle each of these computers take in getting a customer is completely different-

the Power Macs are the only macs that can be EXPANDED, they are larger, they allow you to choose a display. They are really the only option for most pro level people.

iMacs are lovely machines but everything is built in. This makes adding or altering anything but the simplest extras is impossible. Compared to the power macs, these are reallllllly small machines and look 100x more friendly and clean.

eMacs don't really need to be considered here since Apple doesn't market them at all. It is basically an iMac stripped of almost all of its beauty and elegance.

None of these machines play off of each other's names or styles. the eMac is not the iMac light. Apple isn't going to sell something just because it is a good value - that is what dell does.

Now presumably this new machine is going to be aimed much more at media related activities such as playing music and managing the ipod, making/playing movies, dealing with photos. This is a whole new line for apple. It has been a long time since they last made a consumer level computer that wasn't an all in one. Because of this I believe there is no possible way this computer will have the word iMac or eMac in it. For similar reasons I don't think apple is even going to play up the fact that it is a computer. It will be marketed more to the consumer electronics crowd that bought the ipod. How about iPlay or iCreate? With iWork coming out I do feel like the whole "i" thing is getting played out though.
