There has been a lot of discussion about this, so I am starting this thread to sift through all the talk.

In addition to the poll I posted with this thread, I also want to know in your comments... What OS do you WANT the Tablet to run? Different than the poll asking what OS you think it will in fact run when released.

I maintain with the utmost conviction, that the Tablet will in fact run some variant of the iPhone OS for the following solid reasons:

-Apple bought P.A. Semi to make power efficient chips for iPhone, iPod Touch, and the Tablet.
-The Tablet will have an ARM chip.
    -Snow Leopard is Intel only.
    -iPhone OS is ARM only.
-iPhone OS has references for an unreleased product: iProd 1,1.
-Mac OS X is in no way designed for on-screen Multi-Touch. (Tablets to date have failed because most try to use a tiny mouse based UI with touch).
-iPhone OS was specifically designed for on-screen Multi-Touch.
-The Tablet will logically have the App Store.
-Initial rumors have stated that the Tablet will run iPhone OS.

I think that is a pretty rock solid list as proof. Anyone here care to list even a single good reason why they think the Tablet will run OS X?

I believe that in running iPhone OS, the Tablet could very well introduce new features, such as file usage, multi-tasking, iChat Video, etc., and then those features will show up on the iPhone soon after. I also believe that we will very likely see Apple introduce iWork '10 Mobile and iLife '10 Mobile for the Tablet. iWork '10 Mobile is probably most likely. iLife '10 Mobile might just be more robust versions of the iPhone apps that use media.

Share your thoughts and feelings! :D

    Thanks all.

My thoughts are basically the same as yours.

I put down "iPhone OS, beefed up," and that is pretty much what I want it to run as well.

None of the above. The iPhone OS is a version of OS X with a UI that is appropriate to the iPhone. The :apple:TV OS is a version of OS X with a UI that is appropriate to the :apple:TV. In a like manner, the tablet OS will be a version of OS X with a UI that is appropriate to a tablet.

There is absolutely, by no means, any chance that it is ever going to run iPhone OS. It is going to run OS X, optimized for touch screen. That's how Apple does it. And why would you take a less advanced OS and add features on it, when you can take a better OS and adapt it to the actual needs.

That's how the Windows-based tablets do it, and I really think this is the best option: a full-sized desktop-class OS, with touchscreen.

As far as we know, S. Leopard is only made for the full computing line-up. What might arrive to aid the iPad could have a trimmed OSX to put into the iPad, or the iPad comes with/gets a download of a trimmed OSX.

Most likely the OS will be a hybrid, or it might be an enlarged iPhone OS that functions a little more like OSX.

I think the nature of the OS isn't the question, but how the OS functions and what it allows the user to do. If they make mobile iWorks and iLifes, it would be great! Anything to allow greater productivity on an iPod-type device.

As for the App store, I am dumbfounded as to why Apple hasn't integrated the use of apps into OSX. What a moronic waste of possible capital!! I would love to run my apps on my desktop. Seriously. Give Steve a big LOSER sign on the forehead. Give Apple a giant dunce cap and place them in a corner. It's utterly ridiculous.

Good point there. If the tablet OS looks and works more like iPhone OS than Mac OS X, then it's similar to iPhone OS extended to me (at least for this poll).

This poll seems a little pointless. The iPhone already runs a variant of OSX. This was explained pretty clearly by Jobs during the keynote when it was released. They didn't build the iPhone OS from the ground up. They took the same kernel and many of the same frameworks from OSX and then built new frameworks to support the touch interface. I'm confident they're going to do exactly the same thing with the tablet.

no, following your logic, whats the point of OSX itself then? a variety of BSD/Unix?

there are significant enough difference between iPhone OS and mac OSX that warrants the discussion. after all, a mostly single tasking, app controlled system is totally different from a computer OS that users have unlimited freedom.

Im sure you know that, so why arguing terminology and ignore the realistic difference? Apple is famous for inventing and confusing terminologies after all. Like claiming mac is somehow not belong to the category of personal computer (PC), or claiming malwares are viruses, claiming browser speed somehow mostly equals to js speed, etc. Its better we look at the facts and build mutual understand about the topic, and its very clear what OP was polling about.

I guess if you put it that way then the discussion is worth having. The point that was trying to make, aside from arguing terminology, is that the new tablet is not limited to something that is either based off the iPhone OS or OSX. We all saw how they rehashed OSX to fit the form and function of the iPhone and, as far as function, it became something completely different. They're going to go through the same process to fit the form, function, and capabilities of a tablet. They've worked on it for so long, not doing so would be a sloppy gesture, and that's not apple. My bottom line is that I believe the tablet OS will be something very different from both the iPhone and Mac OSes.

    Edit: Woot 500th post! :D

Im hoping its just iPhone OS beefed up. I dont want to learn how to use another set of APIs and iPhone SDK would only need small modifications to suit Tablet.

I'd have to say watered down OSX, but more tablet optimized than watered down.

Ya, I totally agree. I have been wondering when Apple will launch an App Store in OS X and all software goes to digital downloads eventually. There is enormous potential there.

Also, Apple has apparently been ignoring ENORMOUS potential in releasing and SDK and the App Store on the Apple TV as well. Imagine the possibilities. Mac, Tablet, iPhone, Apple TV all integrated with countless apps to do anything you want. Gaming, DVR, web, widgets, TV, and on and on. It would be the first huge leap in the future digital entertainment center and home that Apple has been creating.

Apple really needs to get on the ball in these areas before Microsoft gets its hole Media Center/XBOX/Zune ecosystem in place and locks the world into their DRM and products once again like they did with Windows!

I understand that ultimately we are all looking at different adaptations of OS X. But for the polls sake, I have noticed that there are people that actually expect Mac OS X Desktop to be running on the Tablet and I guarantee that will NOT happen.

Even if Apple takes the iPhone OS and extends its features, functions, and APIs, it ultimately all came from OS X. But I don't think they will go back to square one when they have already done all that work with the iPhone OS and have a dev kit already in place and apps all built on that platform. Hence the option: iPhone OS beefed up! That "beefing up" will probably be additional APIs, features, and functions taken from OS X, but implemented into the iPhone OS as it is already designed for Multi-Touch etc.

    Thanks.

When you say you hope it is Mac OS X, do you mean the desktop version as is, or redesigned for multi-touch in some way?
