Ford has nothing here based on the Mondeo or Euro Focus.

My point was that the Focus was designed in the UK and significantly "Americanized" for our consumption, to the car's detriment IMO. Just compare the current offerings on either side of the pond. The Fusion was supposed to fill the same slot as the Mondeo but I think the latter is a superior car.

Obviously, they are and I agree, but our Focus is in no way related to the Euro Focus. Same with the Fusion. The Fusion is based off the Mazda6's platform.

I think GM should cut itself out of the market. It's not that they're struggling. They're pretty much the living dead. I'm just waiting for them to die so that we can move past this.

The one thing I don't get what GM could do though is couldn't they kill it in the US and keep in in China? It would seem that would make much more sense.

With GM focusing on globalizing their product line, I guess they don't see the reason to badge one vehicle as a Buick in China, but then badge it as a Saturn in the US even though Buick has a presence in the US as well?

The Focus is related to the Euro focus - from 1998-2004 both markets used the same platform. Now we are still limping along with a (facelifted) ten year old platform in the US, whereas the Euro Focus has been totally redesigned.

I wish we had the Euro Focus here.

Hard to imagine Pontiac is going. I grew up in near Detroit, my dad worked at Fisher Body and my uncles at Ford and Chrysler. Still, Detroit doesn't seem to know how to design a strong, efficient, lightweight car. I think the designers and managers had muscle cars in their blood.

I still see some out here in California. 396 Chevelles, Road Runners, Pontiac GTOs all from the 60s. Kind of amazing that they used to make cars like that with those big 6 and 7 liter engines and no smog controls.

Sad to hear. Oldsmobile in the end had some great cars. As does Pontiac. But in the end with GM having had Oldsmobile, Pontiac, GMC, Chevy, Saturn, and so many others - brands got lost when they cut corners to use the same platforms. Look at Saab with the Subaru Impreza rip off.

Cadi is their own IMO. That leaves GM with needing just two or three names left. Take the best of each brand and work with that. Keep the Vibe IMO. Chevy leaves me cold at times with some models.

Hey, wasn't the car named K.I.T.T. in Knight Rider series a Pontiac? Pontiac Fireball or something like that?

Not anymore with the new SRX. I was up at the NYC auto show not too long ago and gosh is it ugly. Not to mention that it's based off the Saab 9-3 chassis, while the previous was on the STS chassis. And you lose 8" in cargo depth and the divet on the top of the trunk. And it weighs 40lbs more than the previous one. My dad's leasing the older version of it and loves it but he hates the idea of having to buy one of the new ones instead.

@opeter. It was a Firebird Trans Am.

The new one is based off of the new Theta-Epsilon platform which is not related to the 9-3 at all. FWD FTL.

Have to remember design is subjective.

If Chevy is the higher end option cars where would Saab be positioned at? And what happened to Cadillac? Saab will not be able to fill Cadillac's spot as a true luxury marquee. And who would compete with Toyota and Honda?

Buick is still a premium marquee and will be paired with Opel( to replace Saturn) for products in the US. We will be getting the Opel Insignia as the Buick Regal( which is about to be launched in China).

Saab = European styling like I said. Competitor to Honda/Toyota higher end vehicles.

Cadillac = Full option Chevy.

Chevy = Mid range. Some upgrades. Say Cadillac minus leather and other bells and whistles.

GMC = Stripped down Chevy and fleet vehicles.

That condenses it like Ford. Lincoln --> Ford--> Mercury

Woo! Good riddance to bad garbage! :D

I'll be sad to see it go. The looks on the hippies' faces at the local co-op were always priceless when one drove by. :D

You call them garbage because they get bad gas mileage.

What if you NEED one? And if you can pay for the gas, who cares?

yeah funny how in europe saab has current the reputation of "buying an opel for the price of a BMW"

and it's design: bland and boring... just like toyota and honda with the only exception of the civic hatchback
and of course in terms of sales Saab is already beyond dead with less than 100k sales per year

Hey, stop it. Dad has a 9-3 Aero and it kicks ass.

Yes, well, we're not in Austria. :D

Seriously, it's not flashy, but plenty of pep and I love the car. We have the convertible.

well with a convertible some sure like the flash ;)

oh and the 9-3 Aero _starts_ at 48.500 euros or so.. hardly surprising saabs aren't popular anymore

What GM did to SAAB is a sin. A stellar example of how GM management took a once great company known for producing quirky, original, innovative, reliable and safe cars that could outrun Porsches and Ferraris in the twisties (once they were already moving) and turned it into Just Another Car Company.

I've been in love with SAABs since I was a kid. I always wanted a new one instead of the hand me downs I drove all through school. Then, by the time I was in a place where I afford a new one for myself, GM had already gutted the company, ripped out the soul and had essentially left an empty shell. At that point, Saab was selling gussied up Saturns. Really, what's it say about Saab when the best performing vehicle they sold in the past decade was a rebadged Subaru WRX? When you think about it, that's the closest they actually got to selling a hatchback in the last decade, too. What does that mean, when Saab didn't have a single example of their iconic hatchback in the lineup?

For years, I had held out hope that Saab would manage to resurrect themselves. I gave up a few years ago. My mom and pop wanted a station wagon/estate as their retirement car and I test drove everything in the Saab lineup. It was sad to see how desperate the sales guys were go move anything off the lot. There wasn't a single thing any Saab did that Subaru didn't do better for 5-10k cheaper. Even the interiors, for which Subaru is notorious for cutting corners on, were about the same. Yet they wanted a BMW price. No. I whittled the prices down on them but at the end of a long shopping process the 9-3 and 9-5 lost on every aspect against every other vehicle I was cross shopping it against. The only things that gave Saab any value to were the front fascia and really nice seats.

These days, Subaru does Saab much better than Saab.

I'm glad they've decided to take SAAB out back to shoot it. It's been sad watching it die.
