Apple should spin off a Mac division (the hardware, software, and design teams chiefly responsible for it) into a subsidy that has its own executives who are responsible solely for Mac operations.

Apple's current executive team can't be bothered to care. They are too busy making watch straps, designing door handles, and approving new emojis.

What are the alternatives you use?

Ableton Live
Propellerheads Reason

Adobe software works just as well on Windows. Etc.

Its not about the tools you use, its how you use them that counts.

The current state is really disheartening, but on the flip side, I haven't needed to upgrade from my Late 2013 retina MBP at all

I just look at it like I'm saving ~2000$ every year haha

I know I'm late to this thread, we're 25 pages deep and what I say may very well been echoed. I would love to buy a new Mac but but there isn't any. I know other members have said in various threads, your patience will be rewarded. I'm not sure. I'm fairly close to buying a windows based machine simply because I'm getting more bang for my buck. I can spend spend almost 3k for a MBP or 1/2 that (or even 2,000) for a windows based machine with superior components.

So you’re saying Apple should be another Lenovo/Acer/Dell, with the focus of volume selling of PC boxes. And you dare relate that to the legacy of Steve Jobs? Seriously?

Steve Jobs conceived the Macintosh because he wants to make the computer for everyone, not just nerds and geeks. That continues to the iMac, MacBook, MacBook Air, and even the iPad, which he himself introduced to the world. See the trend? All in ones, sealed, soldered components, less ports, more appliance like. That’s the vision of Steve Jobs, and I don’t see Apple deviating from that today.

So you cannot bash Apple today yet praise Steve Jobs at the same time, when today’s Apple is still confirming to Jobs’ vision,

No, Apple should be Apple but offer a more reasonably priced computer that is upgradable. The result will be more units sold. A $5000 non upgradable computer is not for everyone. As far as quality and volume selling, I think Apple has that covered with the iPhone. They could do it with a laptop or desktop if they wanted to.

In this day and age technology changes so rapidly. Offering an upgradable computer makes sense to me.

I am sure there are many happy customers with no desire to upgrade their computer as technology advances, but for many of us it is important.

The future of the Mac is iPad.
Mac devs should be investing in the future and figuring out how to bring their technologies and experiences to iOS.
Stop crying about the past.
The Mac still exists but it will never again be given high priority within Apple.
Apple has always been a company that doesn't let the past inhibit their future successes.
Go walk into an office where people are doing actual work and look at what is on every single person's desk. Now go into any coffee shop, and check out those devices with the screen and keyboard that like 90% of people have in front of them. Let us know what you see.

That part about Apple being the most profitable company in the world. I'd like to see the chart once they start investing in iOS based developer tools.

Screen-Shot-2017-05-02-at-4.37.03-PM.jpg

This chart pretty much explains why they haven't come out with a new model desktop or laptop in almost a year. It's about the money.

I really cannot understand why Apple doesn't keep its Mac line updated. Cannot figure it out. There is really no good reason and not one given in this thread. It just doesn't make any sense.

There is a great reason actually. Cook doesn’t give a **** about anything but profits.

If he did he wouldn’t have ruined the customer experience at Apple stores by destroying what Jobs did. Jobs motto was 1 customer for 1 Apple employee during genie appointments. Cook within a year made it 4 customers to 1 Apple employee. It would take 1 hour to get 3 sentence interactions. This was to increase profit.

Then he increases prices on iPhones so the sales looks high and the profit margin looks high for wall street.

Why should he allocate $ to upgrading Macs when he knows the profit or sales will be minimal? This idiot cares about one thing only and that is profit margin. He has always had tunnel vision and he still does. That’s his personality. I mean look at his presentations during keynotes.

The Mac Pro should really be Don't Buy as well. Just because it got a price cut doesn't make it any more attractive for 4.5 year old hardware that had an arguably flawed design in the first place. The fact it's handily beaten by an all-in-one only serves to reinforce this point. MacRumors, please update!

I wonder what the reaction would've been at the Mac Pro's unveiling if Phil Schiller had said they won't be updating it for more than 5 years.

No, the future of Apple is the iPad - a least that's Tim Cook's vision. Its not everyone's vision

You're 100% right and I'd rather spend my hard earned money on a company in which their products are a high priority. You're saying that the Mac can be considered an after thought after iOS devices and that's probably fairly close to the mark.[/quote]

It’s more sad that they have already stated nothing will be shown of the new Mac Pro this year, it purely highlights that the ONLY reason they are making a new Mac Pro is because of the public humiliation and backlash they’ve had over not updating it for several years whilst still charging thousands for it!

Sony’s Playastation 4 and Microsofts Xbox One were launched around the same time as the trash can Mac Pro and they’ve both received updates TWICE, and will be replaced in the next 2 years! Games consoles have been updated more then Apple’s flagship computer....!

Yes but the article is largely from a Mac dev whinging that Apple isn't bringing out new hardware that will help him sell more Mac software to customers buying new Macs. The answer is to forget about the Mac and start thinking about how you get your tools working on iPads and iPhones.
You have no idea what Rogue Amoeba's software does or you would recognize how ignorant your statement is. Audio Hijack Pro hooks way into a Mac's audio in ways that aren't possible or permitted in the locked-down iOS App Store. "Just use a tablet!" people like you forget that there are A/V professionals out there who need to do a lot more than pair some AirPods and a keyboard.

Here's a basic workflow I built to record incoming audio from Skype and from an external mic and output to two separate audio files simultaneously. With 5TB of drive space, I could run this with lossless output for days on end if I needed to, and not run out of room. Now go find iOS hardware and software that lets you do this. We'll wait.

That will not happen. AMD is not crap, nVidia has no offering providing the same or better performance with the same TDP. Or at least did not last year. nVidia's policy is awful. I

We’re not working on consoles here, who gives a **** about TDP ratios? We want the best and fastest available hardware and today that’s nVidia. Cuda is also far more supported.

A 10% market share usually means it is not a priority in business. Throw in consumer computer purchases no wonder Apple doesn't feel the need to update mac. I built an awesome gaming machine for $1200 and the wife stil still uses a 8-9yr old HP desktop with office and win10 on it just fine. The darn thing is faster now than it was new. Apple knows the avg. Consumer won't pay their prices anyway, Mac is a niche product and they know it. Apple sticks to what really sells and they should.

I don't understand the uproar, you want a Mac, a niche product they are available for a cost. You want new hardware, faster machine that just does more for less you buy windows for a 1/3 of the cost. Hence why windows still holds a 40% market share. No to mention 90% of businesses still use windows that are 9yrs old and newer because they still work, are updated and many run win10 faster than they ran win7 they came with.
Tbh, high prices and a walled garden is what killed iPads in the education market leaving Google/Android to steal and conform all those kids into their eco system

Tim Cook is a sales guy not all that different from John Sculley, Steve Jobs was a visionary. That's the difference. Those of you who were not around to see Steve leave and then return to Apple may not really understand how much he WAS Apple. It won't be long before Apple is just another movie studio or record label. I don't think Apple even knows what sort of company it is anymore.

Part of the issue is the state of the industry. People aren’t buying home computers at the rate they previously did. It’s now possible to live entirely with your mobile devices. In some ways the Mac (and PC) are relics in the consumer world. The situation will look more dire in 10 years. Only dinosaurs like me will probably be buying another Mac.

Agree, I think the home PC for mostly personal use has one foot in the grave....

Anyone realize today’s coding is not sturdy anymore?
Meahwhile while typing this, the Mac mini 2012 stopping streaming the mlb game is was watching. For 2 minutes I had to stop the spinning ball, clear cache, reload safari, click bookmarks, select mlb favorite, tap the game I was watching, and think of getting rid of high Sierra, maybe tomorrow.

I will never by a new Mac product again!

Nice new HQ full of thousands of staffers using old hardware. It's hard to believe they don't make new stuff to use on their own desks. I guess it's all about the tables and windows and light fixtures. It just doesn't make sense. Maybe it's about the toilets.
Fixing on getting a larger, better house is a syndrome of ‘Poor Dad’. Apple’s current leaders have spent Apple’s hard-earned money on things that are ‘debt’ rather than ‘assest’ according to the definition ‘Rich Dad’. The executives are neither the founders nor current owners of Apple Co. Naturally, they priotize their own interests over the compay’s, and certainly the customers’.

Yep, absolutely agree. Last year I considered getting a Mini but considering the price and state of the mini went with a different solution instead (not from Apple). My wife needs a replacement for her old MacBook Pro and so do I for my 2012 MacBook Pro that I use for work (and is barely usable any longer). Not going to buy any of those outdated and overpriced machines right now.
There is absolutely no justification for the current state of the Mac hardware. Apple has enough money on the bank to update those machines regularly and offer us current technology.
I am only staying with Apple as I prefer macOS, the software that we have for macOS and the Apple eco-system.
