Try taking a moment to realize that Apollo is merely a wrapper that someone created around someone else's service. It is not entitled to exist, nor was it ever sanctioned. Since it is such a good app, that displays no ads, of course people use it. And people using it takes away from Reddit's own revenue. So Reddit is pricing the API requests to ensure that it doesn't detract anymore.
Could they not just mandate that Apollo show ads then?

The reason why Companies like Facebook or Reddit exist is because of the community, not because of a perfect, be-all-and-all interface.

There will always be a tailor made Reddit app that better suits a certain user-type instead of another, and if this can be made relatively easy from another app it makes no sense for Reddit to give basically free usage of its core asset, the community, to somebody that doesn't have to maintain the whole infrastructure and can happily offer an alternative for a fraction of the price, without i.e. having to put ads etc.
I mean, Facebook is a bad example because their API is locked down and there aren't any alternative Facebook clients.

Corporate greed as usual. It’s a shame because Apollo is a fantastic app. I won’t mind paying a little more for it to stay away from that piece of crap Reddit app if you want to call it that.

There are other more valuable things in life then social media, sleep definitely included ☺️

Too bad that Reddit are going down that road too though. I don't miss Twitter one bit though since I've more or less stopped using it. I only use it to check things through Tweetdeck on Mac. Not using Twitter on iOS at all, and very seldom for Reddit too
What I've use/used most with Reddit is no app. To 99% I use it on Mac in Safari, with quite some tabs.
Not using hardly any social media on iOS at all, is a win win for me, my focus, time and life.
The sheer ignorance online is disheartening.

But in places where malnutrition has not improved for 3 decades where in one in three children (29%) younger than five years old suffered from physical and mental stunting then low IQ will prevail.

So why subject yourself to that sort of content?

Another soulless company killing off those who supported them for so long. What time is it Now? Everyone is too big to fail unless you are an individual business owner?
And, if Reddit wants to charge exorbitant fees for API access, why not charge even higher? Like, much higher. $80000 for 5 API calls for example.:rolleyes::rolleyes: serves the same purpose at that pricing anyways. All we need is to send a message anyway, right?

Apple did this with their API's. I'm trying to rack my brains to what app that was affected, MR reported on it. It was a popular 3rd party app that was way better than Apple's version, was it a weather app??or messaging app? anyway, Apple changed the conditions of the API which meant the developer could no longer develop their app.

Hey all, if you have any questions about this feel free to ask (I'm the Apollo developer).
Thanks Christian... I'm curious, the article said you had reasonable discussions with Reddit. Did you get the impression they were trying to "price-away" (i.e. eliminate) third-party apps, or are they trying to have revenue match what they are getting with ad impressions on the web and their own app? Instead of paying for the API, could you incorporate ads they serve with the content? (Don't know if you or users would want that -- just trying to understand Reddit's motivation(s)).

Android Authority reached out to them and Reddit responded by doubling down on it.

Guess I’m done with Reddit. Just as well. Too much time wasted doom scrolling there anyway.

The original Reddit App version is way too confusing and cluttered!

Where do you even start from? 😌

With the way they are conducting themselves now, I wouldn't be surprised if that gets taken down as part of "cost saving" or some other (currently) trendy reason.

Been using MacRumors since before I could code so it's always cool to be on the site, wish it was under better circumstances.

You are still the best!

Reddit is a place with full of punks just like people talking [...] all day long standing at the street corners in real life.

I personally never wish it existed in the first place.
I think you mean Twitter - Reddit can be (& is a lot of the time) way more organized than Twitter.

This is funny as that dev pulled a bait and switch on push notifications a couple years back on customers who already paid for Pro. Karma.

Maybe the problem isn’t that Reddit is charging too much but that the developer of Apollo is charging too little and relying on taking things for free, and that people are too big of cheapos to pay for what they use.

How many of the complainers are paying users of Apollo?

Been wondering when the shoe would drop on this. Been expecting to open Apollo and see some bad news any day now.

For me this is going to go as well for them as it did for Twitter. Sadly I’m just going to have to quit using it except in a heavily adblocked and CSS modified browser window, as the site is just as garbage as Twitter’s site. Hard to tell which is worse, they both want to make it impossible to actually read what you came there for.

And I am certainly NOT giving them the satisfaction of using their garbage first party app, same as Twitter.

Reddit had a good run for a long time but the writing has been on the wall that that’s over for years now. Will support whatever app Christian comes up with next as he’s clearly a great developer. Sad they decided to screw him and other good people over like this.

I understand that companies need to monetize, but that’s clearly not what this is about. In business you don’t say no, you just set the price so high people can’t or won’t do it. This is about leverage, not monetizing the API.

If Reddit actually expected to make money from this they would charge a reasonable price. This isn’t about making money, it’s about shutting out third party apps without coming out and saying that’s what they want to do.

Clearly the developer is making enough that he expected to be able to pay a nominal fee. The price they quoted him was not a nominal fee, it was a ”**** you” without saying that. If there was any reasonable way to continue I’m sure he would, but instead he clearly sees this as the end of his app.
