Even if Face ID is more secure I think most consumers will be content at just being secure enough. And with under screen fingerprint sensors allowing for near notchless displays, pretty soon that's where most of the industry will be going. Apple needs to shrink Face ID small enough to match otherwise iPhones with notches will stick out like a sore thumb.

Apart from not having fancy names for it other companies pretty much can match Apple. Then why haven't they you might ask? Because of costs, Face-ID hardware is not cheap and design considerations, less cameras and hardware smaller notch, while in-display fingerprint offers practically the same user experience.

The security consideration is ********.

1/30000 or 1/1000000 is good only for telling that your implementation is 33x less likely to get a false positive.

Both are secure enough.

If you want to focus on security go right ahead, I said implementation. And apples Face ID and Secure Enclave implantation is second to none.

I did mention that the fingerprint sensor was cheaper.

Not to mention the fact that no other oem has 3d facial recognition software/hardware that can rival Face ID or it’s Secure Enclave implementation.

So yeah what else is every other android oem going to put on their phone, obviously something cheaper and off the shelf.

No idea why some on here are calling for apple to replace Face ID with a “cheaper off-shelf sensor” solution.

Fact remains 3d facial recognition for android oems just is not there yet, and a cheaper solution is what’s available, so shipments of onscreen FPS will rise for that reason.

In order to do that, Apple has to reduce the internal components with Face ID. If you think about it, there’s _a lot_ of hardware that bring face ID together with the dot projector, proximity/ambient light sensors, flood illuminator, speaker/microphone, infrared/front camera.. I mean, I don’t think the technology is refined enough for Apple to reduce the notch any further given everything that is embedded underneath, (or), unless they change the design altogether, which I don’t forsee happening as of yet.

FaceId is flawless and so much better, so why introduce this half baked crap

Flawless?? Are you trolling? TouchID maybe failed once every other month, FaceID fails at least once a day, it may be more secure and convenient in lots of circumstances but it is not flawless... I for one would pay the extra to have both with TouchID on the back of the phone

Interest in this isn’t driven by the price of the sensor or display, it’s driven by people wanting fingerprint ID biometrics rather than face scanning. Personally I hate FaceID and would love a return to the fingerprint scanner. They could easily build it into one of the side buttons if they HAD to keep their edge to edge. I don’t even see the big deal with including both.

I don't like Face ID - so many situations it doesn't work nicely for me. Wearing sunglasses, wearing a ski helmet, bad light, wrong angle, wrong distance, flat on table etc etc. I hope we get a fingerprint back.

This is why I don't understand why FaceID fanboys defend it to the hilt. It's not "more convenient" as all those inconveniences you spelled out shows, and I agree.

Okay sure, you can't wear a glove and use TouchID, but other than that, it works 99% of the time. Maybe unless someone has greasy fingers -- that's a personal issue. Is TouchID less secure? I guess, maybe. Unless I missed something, I've never heard of mass security breaches of finger print devices.

I love my iPhone 7 Plus and TouchID is much more convenient than FaceID, despite what some people say.

I would love it if Apple put TouchID into the side power button. Seems like a no-brainer to me, and Samsung already does it. As a bonus, it does away with yet another mechanical button.

A solution to your solution: don't use an apple phone..? – Customers vote with their feet, do they not? Sales data is self-describing.
Too much of a weirdness (AKA "think different") leads to poor sales & all the rest
A solution is to follow the law which forbids any kind of phone use while driving, but if you are so bent to hand someone your phone just swipe up and enter your passcode and stop crying.

Apple, why not both Face ID and Touch ID?
Because it would make phone less secure.

You are holding it wrong. No joke.

I’m surprised the S10e didn’t get more recognition with it’s cool little finger print scanner in the wake button. Unless I’m totally out of the loop on this, that’s the first phone to ever do that as far as I know, and it seems like a wayyy better location than having it on the back by the camera like 99% of other android phones. Is there some sort of catch to it? Like does it not work very well or something?

If you mean the power button, Sony have done this.

Use Touch ID on an SE and a 6S with Eonfine waterproof cases and Touch ID fails maybe once every few months solved with a micro cloth. Of course I lock/unlock phones with a long passcode. I hate the idea of Face ID dependency. Yes, in a stylish urban environment some might find it adequate. But I will stick with a 10 character passcode - no problems or false readings there - and use Touch ID for some apps once unlocked.

I don’t even think it’s just convenient to use face ID, it’s more or less about the security measures behind face ID encompasses. I mean, I don’t believe any other smart phone has manufactured successfully to reproduce Face ID to Apples level of security.
So secure I can say hey look at this and you just unlocked it for me.

You mean like Microsoft and connect?

Face ID works well for me on the XS. I prefer it over Touch ID. I’m impressed at the angles it works at, in the dark, in my airplane with a headset on, etc. I have fewer problems with it than the old Touch ID, which failed if my fingers were sweaty, too dry, or cut up from physical work.

The Samsung S10+ in screen fingerprint sensor is neat - I have one for some testing work, but it has its own quirks, such as not being as quick as Apple’s sensors, and it is compatible with only a few screen protectors.

The Pixel 3’s sensor in the back of the phone is almost as convenient as Face ID in practice, but requires picking up the phone and all the other downsides of touch-based fingerprint readers.

Now that I've had Face ID devices I have zero interest in getting another fingerprint sensor. Face ID is almost flawless for my usage.

Apple Pay was definitely easier with Touch ID compared to Face ID

I agree with this but now that I have an Apple Watch it's even easier and I don't use my phone for payments anymore.

Don't get that hype. Face-ID is much more convenient.

When I'm working I have my phone next to me on my desk. Its secondary… far from the centre of my universe. So its a complete stupidity to either have to bend over my phone, which is often like 2 feet away - especially when I'm charging it, else having to pick up the phone. That's a lot of wasted time and effort in wanting to just glance at something.

The Samsung S10 under display fingerprint scanner has some serious issues.

I can tell you now, the foibles of the S10's ultrasonic FPS is way more convenient for me than Face ID when you want to use your phone on the side as opposed to giving it your full attention. Having an FPS on the front of a phone is worth a lot to me.

Well… if you call flawless my ability to unlock my mother's iPhone X with my face (I'm male if you were happen to be wondering) when its setup with my mother's face. It was funny looking at all the dropped jaws at the Apple Store when we were showing it up through the chain of support people. She got a new iPhone X… that does it too. So yeah, flawless.

That's funny because it works perfectly for me, especially after the last update. But please carry on talking about things you have no knowledge of.
[doublepost=1555932505][/doublepost]

Also looks like Apple will have the same in display fps soon.

The only person who talks about things while he doesn't have the knowledge of, are you. First of all, your Samsung phone doesn't represent the reports of others that are still facing a problem with the fingerprint scanner. It either doesn't respond well on the fingerprints sometimes or it's slower than it should be. Some people don't have a problem with it while others do. But what do you know, nothing. Especially when you view everything from your own pink lenses, and thinking that everything that doesn't happen on your phone, is a representation of others. But What do you know, no knowledge is your middle name.

The latest update fixed the issues, you would know this if you actually owned the device, but no you are just regurgitating what you have read. Please carry on :)

Shouldn’t really have to buy a £600 device to restore user experience though :(

I have an Apple Watch too :)
