Porsche joins Tesla in offering tech upgrade to existing cars.

I hope to see the trend spread to other manufacturers. Expecting your customers to buy a new car just to get new entertainment system is just shortsighted.

That really would be nice to see, especially with how much technology inside cars has changed every few years. Then again, they want to put you in a new car, so this isn't that appealing from a manufacture standpoint.

Will they be making one for my Wife's 2006 PT Cruiser?

This is all we can afford...

I wish BMW would do this. I have a '91 850i that I'd love to put one of these in - it's nearly impossible to find a period correct Blaupunkt with an aux-in input, let alone Bluetooth integration. As for putting in something newer, the newer head units are horrible - they don't match the design or illumination of older cars.

Porsches tend to be pretty reliable - TCO on my 997.2 is lower than my E90 335i, so far. As with any European car, though, they do not take kindly to deferred maintenance, which explains why they get a bad rap in the US...
Indeed... indeed... I generally don't understandt why head units need to look like they look. I don't need retro-style but how about not scifi blue light spaceship cockpit? If it would only emit warm white light, that would already help a lot to match the bulbs in the rest of the car...
Other than that... 850i... really nice car... Hope it runs nice, can be very expensive otherwise...

Your response just shows you know nothing about owning expensive, high performance vehicles. I read an article last year about the cost of an oil change for a Bugatti. It was, sit down now, $23,000.00. The vehicle in question had to be partially disassembled to change the oil. It also had 12 drain plugs.

If you have the cash to own a Porsche, or Maserati , or Bentley, you certainly don’t care about repairs costs. Since most, if not all, of those owners also use iPhones these radios will sell very well.

In my male menopause period I bought a Harley Davidson motorcycle because, well, I wanted a Harley. A friend explained to me what HD actually stood for. it stood for “Hundred Dollars” because time you walked through the dealership’s doors you were on the hook for at least a hundred dollars, no matter what you were there for. ;)

You have absolutely NO idea about Porsche maintenance.

A Porsche is not like any other super car. A Porsche you can actually drive in daily - summer and winter (if you dare) - Try that with any other supercar and your mechanic will thank you and empty your wallet.

IF you have the cash to buy one and avoid the pitfall years - your total cost of ownership for a Porsche is incredibly low. I would put service and repair cost in the range of a medium sized German car. So if you do your research before you buy - you can end up with a supercar that cost very little to keep on the road. And apart from the initial "loss" out the door - aged based financial losses on Porches are not high. So overall TCO if you buy 2nd hand and are smart - is very low.

If you buy a "newish" Porsche that can be put on factory extended warranty - you are quite well covered and you won't have to pay for the really expensive repairs unless you screw up. And Porsche is as far as I know still the only company that gives warranty with WORLD WIDE coverage - incl. the extended warranty.

And I think it still holds true - Porsche is the brand with the largest percentage of their produced cars are STILL on the road and running compared to ALL other car brands.

YES there are Porche lemons like there are with many other brands. Years where things went wrong etc. But read up - and avoid them - or find a good mechanic who know the cars well.

Now in about 3-10 months time - it will be the right time to purchase a Porsche if the crisis really bites. Then you can have a lot of good years and very little loss.

Cool that they made that mod. The other thing I notice in the pic is an ashtray and cigarette lighters for the actual lighting of cigarettes. Man things have changed!

I don't know much about the classic car game, but wouldn't adding this actually diminish the value of the car?
No as you can install/remove without damage. There is no need for this in cars you don't drive and only keep for appreciation though.

As an owner of a Porsche 996 this is great. Allows you to keep your car with a "factory" Porsche look with out having to put some janky head unit in that was never designed for the car and doesn't fit very well.

Other manufacturers should really do this but most are not interested in keeping their older cars on the road as Porsche is.
My 2011 X5 doesn’t support CarPlay and the navigation is primitive and no longer updated, so I got an aftermarket Avin system (I call it “Chinese CarPlay” as the initial connecting message said “In Connection” before a firmware update fixed it).

It’s really just an Android tablet with some physical connections and pass through from the OEM head unit, but they got the look right - seems like a screen from a 2016 model.

It’s not perfect but for $500 plus a few hours of me pulling things apart and putting them together again I have CarPlay, Waze and streaming audio integration.

A Maserati is available on lease special for $600/mo new and older models (but still modern) can be had for $15,000. An old 911 is generally a $30-50,000 affair. These aren't millionaire cars. They are BARELY even aspirational anymore in an era of $75,000 pickup trucks. Of course the buyers care about repair costs.
Hard to find radiator caps for those classic 911s though. Usually in an empty space next to the blinker fluid at Autozone.

Love the commercial. When the older gentleman says "hey Siri" it activated my home pod which started playing some random song lol.

Old school...

If you don't have to cut up the dashboard to fit the new unit, it shouldn't matter. Keep the old unit and include it if you ever do sell. The fact it is a factory part might even add value.

Very nice! I may actually put this in my 924S. This radio has actually been available (minus CarPlay) for a while. Wasn’t worth it for me without CarPlay at that price. There is actually a radio made by Continental that looks vintage but has Bluetooth and phone connectivity that I have seen installed in many older Porsches and it sells for under $200. No navigation, but looks model appropriate. Was going to get that, but now may reconsider now that CarPlay is and option. Can’t really use the single din fold out CarPlay units as they hit the gear shift when deploying. If you leave it out, it covers the climate controls. Now, have to save up the money.

Strikes me as a surprisingly cheap price, given it's an official product of Porsche. But I can't imagine there will be any demand. You have to find someone who owns an old Porsche, wants it to have some phone integration, but isn't willing to just stick their phone on their dashboard.

Don't underestimate the enthusiasm of classic Porsche owners for someting like this. They'll bitch about the price but still want one fo rtehir car, especially since it is a Porche accessory and retains a good bit of the classic Blaupunkt look.

My Honda service rep just chuckled when I asked him if there was a CarPlay factory add-on for my 2014 Accord. 😡

hah, try my 2006 Saturn ION sedan. 😂 I give it regular maintenance and at 185,000 miles it’s still going well. Sadly, ECM got shorted out by bad connector, and an ECM fuse blew on a separate incident, but it was still better than new car purchase (and I couldn’t get a loan anyway). Just had camshaft solenoids replaced (not as scary as it sounds, really). It runs smooth and solid.

I’m replacing some exterior trim next weekend to give it some love, and I’ll do body paint correction later this summer (damn 11yr old kid took out his anger on my doors with his bike handlebar.. grrr).

I’d love CarPlay.. but it’ll be tough for many reasons. I have a lifetime subscription for Sirius XM I bought in 2006... $500 one time fee. 😁 no music royalty fee charges since either, and full package; all channels. I’d hate to lose that. $3/mo and dropping... hard to beat that.
