Porsche today announced that Taycan models in the United States are adopting Apple Maps EV routing in CarPlay, a feature that will direct Taycan owners to nearby electric vehicle charging facilities.

The Apple Maps EV Routing option will allow Taycan users to plan travel routes that include stops for charging. Prior to now, Taycan owners had to exit out of CarPlay in order to create a route that included charging stops.

Taycan vehicles include the Porsche Charging Planner, designed to optimize stops based on the anticipated state of charge upon arrival to a destination, traffic conditions, and average speed, but Apple Maps EV Routing is now available as an alternative for those who use CarPlay.

Apple Maps EV Routing uses real-time vehicle information to help customers get to their destination, with charging stops recommended when necessary. Apple Maps analyzes elevation changes along a route and other factors to determine when to suggest a charging stop, and if the vehicle's battery gets too low, it will provide a route to the nearest compatible charging station.

Porsche says that Apple Maps EV routing is available to U.S.-based Taycan owners who have installed the latest My Porsche app on their iPhones.

Next for Porsche is to enable a similar vehicle to CarPlay synchronization with their hybrid vehicles. If you use Porsche's in car navigation in one of their hybrid vehicles it will optimize the charging strategy based on your trip. I.e, if your trip has a highway portion that finishes with a drive through a city it will automatically charge your hybrid battery up using the engine when you're on the highway and switch to EV mode when you reach the city. Using CarPlay navigation should accomplish the same effect tbh.

better than tesla's garbage infotainment and routing

Whilst I prefer CarPlay overall it has to be said Tesla's system is not complete garbage. Regardless of everyone's opinions on CarPlay vs OEM OS, Apple Maps vs. OEM routing, Tesla has the best system responsiveness out of all of them -- it's iPad level fast for most functions. I'm hoping next generation CarPlay changes this so that we can drive cars without ever interacting with the built in OS.

Is that a joke? Do you have a Tesla? Tesla infotainment and routing is near perfect.

The main thing missing from Tesla's navigation right now is notification of accidents and slowdowns, a feature already integrated into Apple Maps, Waze, and Google Maps via CarPlay. Also Tesla don't have a great system for discovery of locations as you're driving (say I need to stop as a grocery story quickly, I can only search for specific names and not categories). They just added the ability to read some Google Maps business info right in the map (reviews, pictures, opening times) so maybe that will change soon.

I'm not a huge Tesla fanboy but I can't really fault them for their consistent upgrades to the infotainment.

oh yeah, unfixed bugs for years, podcasts starting over whenever you get into the car, pure perfection. (es this isn't clear, I'm talking about Teslas 'perfect' UI)

Put that in your tailpipe and smoke it, GM!

Is this any different? From what I understand this is built in Apple Maps, a bit like GM have gone with built in Google Maps.

And to be honest I’d rather have Google Maps.

Say more about Tesla's "garbage" routing. What's wrong with it? I'm curious. I have no opinions since I don't have an EV (only rode in one once).
He has never driven one. Tesla automatically routes you through their vast supercharging network and shows exactly how long each charge will take, optimized to minimize the total trip time. It shows you all the details and is seamless.

While I never experienced Tesla's infotainment, the public (users) are generally unhappy with current infotainment offerings. At the same time, Team Tesla are an extremely dedicated bunch and loyal to their 'master' to a fault. 😂
Unhappy? Says who? lmao

lol in your dream. the ryzen infotainment in my tesla can play cyberpunk 2077, its literally ps5 level computing power.
While I agree that Tesla's infotainment is very good, I don't think the ability to play games has much to do with its capabilities and usability as a car infotainment/console (although it's impressive nonetheless).

I have used Apple CarPlay for years in several cars, and now drive a Tesla Model 3.
Every car I owned, I had to plug in my phone before I could use CarPlay, and often it wouldn't connect. Then unplug and try again a few times. Zooming an panning the screen is difficult as you need to use a little +/- on the screen and cursors. With the Tesla you simply pinch zoom and use your finger just like on an iPad to pan and rotate. Much better.
Not only will the Tesla nav take you to Tesla Supercharger, but will know enough when to start precondition the battery for optimal charging when you arrive.
The Tesla will look at appointments on your synced iPhone and when you get into the car will have the destination already mapped out on the screen.

I don't miss CarPlay in the Tesla at all.

Tesla forces users to use its system whether they want to or not. Most other manufacturers let you decide.

CarPlay works great on my Mach-E and with over the air improvements since launch it is really responsive. I only interact with the OEM system to change vehicle setting. Ford has also greatly improved the interface since launch.
