Portal 2 Now Available for Mac

This isn't like iTunes or those other similar services. Once you buy something on Steam, unless you lose your account somehow then you have that game forever. You can download it on as many computers as you like.

It's the bee's knees of digital distribution.

To all those asking if the game will run on your system; I play on medium settings on a 5 year old iMac and I'm getting good (30+ fps) performance under Windows. It's very well built.

"Im making a note here, huge success..."

Picked up a copy of this up on Amazon. They have a $20 gift card deal going on. Plus if you buy the Playstation 3 version (and sync your PSN and Steam IDs) you can download a free copy of the game for your PC or Mac. So that's about $35 for the game and a $20 gift card, plus free shipping (2 day shipping for Prime members) and no tax? That's a good deal in my book. :D

Why is it that they charge $50 for just streaming? Would retailer get mad if they under cut the price to just get a digital copy. The profit margin got to be so much more then actually producting a box, materials, ect, and cutting a retailer on the take. So why not make the price $25-$30. I see amazon has it for $45 along but some lag time for shipping.

Because you're buying a game. Not a box for one. The argument could be made, "why is the boxed version more expensive than the download version? That's one expensive useless box!"

Unless Valve is in the business of selling boxes it makes perfect sense.

I started playing last night. So far the writing is amazing. They've really added to the basic idea of the game, and it seems to be much longer. Props to Valve, they've made a great sequel.

I've spent the past 8 hours playing this (I can't believe how fast time flew! I thought maybe 3 hours at the most!) Its an EXCELLENT game so far. I'm pretty sure I'm almost finished with it. The puzzles are a step up difficulty wise and the game splits into many different areas. The game is much longer than the first one.

Maybe someone who has it could start a framerate thread, where people could post their configs and results. That would be a nice reference for those needing perf data.

...(and a constant reminder for those of us weeping bitter tears because their rig is too feeble)

Just because a couple of geeks running MacRumours think this is front page worthy doesn't mean it is.

This just in, a game came out for Mac!

It's more embarrassing to the OS then anything.
You are a perfect candidate to start your own news website. And just think, you wouldn't have to do anything today!
PS: Who the ---- rates these threads negative? Ha ha! Id think its either positive or "meh, not interested". But negative?
You know the rating system is just too basic here.

That's for audio files, which are controlled by the actual owners, which are NOT Apple or Amazon. Apps you can re-download, since they have different legal standing and contracts.

I'd like to know if it will run on my 2009, last-gen 24 inch iMac (The cheaper 24 inch), before I commit. Portal 1 runs fine (without any fancy stuff).

Anyway, the whole idea of a FPS where you don't quite 'shoot', is brilliant IMO. Best game ever :)

Last time I got the Portal free and was very happy playing it.
I'll buy a Portal 2 once I get my new MBP for sure

That's not how steam works. When you purchase something through steam, you can download and install it as many times as you want. If your computer crashes, all you have to do is reinstall steam log into your account and redownload it. This is one of the reasons why steam is so popular.

as far as the price. $50 for games is standard, especially for pc ( and I guess now mac ). It costs millions of dollars to make and promote a game. Most games for consoles are $60 and there PC counterpart are $50 because both microsoft and sony take $10 off each sale. If you are concerned with the length of the game, go read a few reviews and they will all tell you the game is much much longer then the original, plus it includes a co-op mode with different levels. $50 seems pretty good to me.

Also, it's supply/demand. Millions of people are going to go out and spend $50 on the game, so why not sell it at $50? The nice thing about steam is, if you can find it cheaper elsewhere, you can still install it on your PC/Mac and play it through steam. But a lot of people are willing to pay the $5 extra to get the convenience of not needing to ship or wait in a line to buy the game.

the streaming distribution of the game is much cheaper then phyiscal copy distribution. I just saying they can add an incentive to make people download it, and they make more MONEY. Which is a given they are making alot more per digital copy sold compared to phyiscal copy sold. There is sizible production cost with making phyiscal copy, distributing to retailers, and then giving cut to retailer who selling it. Especially as the title gets older and retailer take more on each sale.

Currently, I noted that it is cheaper to buy physical copy then it is to buy digital copy. That shouldn't be the case. And I believe eventually wont be the case in future for software. I not debating that there are costs involved with making these games, I am debating what the streaming model should look like. It show be cheaper.

no box version cheaper.. that's the point..

The price was also a concern for me since the original was similar to a mini game and basically a free thrown-in with the orange box. But they are calling it a "massive sequel" with a "larger set of devious test chambers." I ordered mine for Xbox360 just because that's what I'm use to. Also, I pre-ordered from Amazon because they gave a $5 discount and offered a $20 account credit (Xbox360 or PS3 only). The offer is actually still available today even though technically it's no longer a pre-order.

Anybody know if that is possible for Xbox? My guess would be no since it's Microsoft, but I'll look into anyway.

I think it means "Fast Portal Selection".

If you're asking about the FREE PC deal, no. Since Steamworks is not used for the xbox version, it's considered a different type of platform. Here, Valve's goal was that since Steamworks is all integrated, like between windows/osx that you pay once for the game and you get it on all tied platforms. Like any other steamworks/steamplay games. Since the PS3 version works similarly, they could do that since PS3 players can play with PC players. Xbox guys are by themselves on this one.
