I honesty have not seen Portenzo deleting any negative feedback or pictures of defective cases from their wall for the past two weeks. (I have seen a posts deleted before then).

Personally, I have made posts that stirred the anger of some fanboys but when I clicked the link on my notifications to read the replies, they seemed to have been deleted by either Portenzo or the original poster. This has happened several times with the posts of that guy Carl S. who I remember one time was trolling on Portenzo's wall pretty hard and made a lot of people angry. I think recently when Portenzo does dp housekeeping on their wall, it's usually to remove rude inappropriate posts.

I see absolutely nothing wrong with them keeping their website positive. We forget FB is not a forum, but a business venture/advertisement. Portenzo owns that space,we are there at their invitation. It is not our god given right to post there with things that displease them.

That's what forums are for. Anyplace you post where the owner has the right to delete or modify other peoples post cannot be considered impartial and a place to get good data. Do you believe the owner reviews on most selling sites that own them? Ever seen any bad reviews? Nooo....

Here, no other person - except the moderators - can change your post. On FB, they can change anything..and as I said, rightfully so, it's a marketing and advertising tool for business.

Imagine what this place would look like if we all could mod each others stuff....LOL

Good exchange with Portenzo today - they are sending a new case and expediting production after I gave them several options I would accept in colors...I'll post the pics here when I get it.

What options or choices did you have to make if I may asks

none..just told them I was open to interior color if that would help. we changed from Linen on old case to black. I have found out all these cases dirty the interior material as you use them from folding them back - the darker the color the better for long looking life...

I went with a Morrocco Standard with magna Grip as well as the elastic. No Camera Hole, Red Interior. I am waiting for them to get back to me on some Custom Engraving that I want to see if they can do. Lets just say that I collect Dragon images and so forth. Hopefully they will come back with an acceptable qoute if they can do it.

Did you guys see this thread about the Cardinal Case?

https://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?p=12662436#post12662436

The thing that caught my eye was their really innovative design, particularly their use of magnets and notches for use in landscape. It's a very cool idea and much more sturdy than any other book-style case from any of the big names. Wouldn't buy one because frankly I don't want to spend $70+ to be a beta tester.

I'm going to keep my eye on it though because once they work out some of the kinks that are being talked about, I think it has the potential to leap ahead of the rest of the companies who frankly are pretty much all the same.

Well my order finally shipped. # 10XXX . I should have the case tomorrow, it says. I will post a review with pics and whatnot when I get it in and situated.

I will say the company ALWAYS responded to me in a super-timely manner but it got pretty ugly when I was nearing 7 weeks without a case, which is why mine probably shipped out before other #'s before me.

I'll touch more on that in the review though, lol. Looking forward to it! This thing is like the holy grail, took freaking forever.

Got my portenzo!

I love my portenzo case! I had nothing but great service from Darin and Scott. The case gets many looks on my commute, and it looks different. I will get another portenzo in a heartbeat!!

Or ~12,960,000 heartbeats it appears, on average. :D

I received my custom Portenzo yesterday! My original order date was 03/15, order #51xx. Originally I ordered: iPad 2 Case with camera opening, Cover Material: Morocco, Interior Material: Black, Magna-Grip Cover, Stylus option. After reading on this thread about some people having issues with the synthetic materials cracking or getting white corner rub spots over time I emailed Darin to see if it would be possible to upgrade to a stiff board-backed leather cover. For my iPad 1 I had the Portenzo Alano which was excellent but a little too flexible when standing up in landscape mode. On 04/05 I asked Darin if they could make a black leather case similar to the white 23 ½ with thinner leather than the Alano over the standard hard board backing. He said the Morroco and Levant materials are very durable and scratches, wear marks are rare but if I wanted leather this would be possible but would add additional time to my order as it was a custom job and they were concentrating on shipping as many Moroccos and Levants as they could. I told him the wait wasn’t a problem as I had a temporary case in hand (Switcheasy Canvas) and didn’t mind waiting. When changing this order I also got rid of the stylus option which made the iPad look too unbalanced left-to-right for me and I asked for clear bumpers to be added. Over the next 2 months I sent periodic emails just to make sure I was still on the radar. I always received quick responses from Darin, Liz, Caitlin and then finally Scott who was amazing in his responsiveness and follow-through. My case shipped on 5/31 and I received it on 06/02.

So, was my case worth a 2 ½ month wait? YES - I now have in hand a custom black leather 23 1/2 ! The photos I have posted below do not do it justice as I shot them on my iPhone this morning and they’re not the best. The wood is sanded very well, no rough spots, splinters or uneven sanding as seen in the small flawed batch that went out. The buttons and charger port are a tiny bit hard to get to but that’s an issue of the iPad being so thin, they are all usable and the depth “problem” isn’t an issue for me. The leather has a great smooth and supple texture to it, it does not look as shiny as the photos make it out to be, they were shot under fluorescent light in my office, which also makes the wood look a tad greenish. The Magna-Grip and Secret Power Button work perfectly. My thought on the Secret Power Button isn’t that Portenzo is trying to cut corners, I think they are trying to avoid dust getting in by the camera lens through the power switch cutout. On my case it looks like the rubber camera gasket has been shifted up a little bit and integrated into the frame a bit more than older cases. Like many other cases the camera hole is not centered on the camera itself but I don’t really care about that too much. I’m glad I ordered the strap as propping the case up in landscape on smooth surfaces is virtually impossible without it. Coming from owning a Portenzo iPad 1 case the only issues I have with the iPad 2 case is that the iPad sits a bit low, leaving a small gap between the screen and the lip of the case. Also, the edges of the case feel a tiny bit “sharp” to me, not a big deal but after using the smoother Switcheasy Canvas. It would be nice if they were able to round the edges off a bit but I’m sure I’ll get used to it, either that or I’ll sand the edges down a hair myself.

All in all this case was worth waiting for, smooth, sleek, very professional and as you can see from the last photo in my set it goes well with the custom-branded Moleskines my company provides. I’m very happy with this case and wouldn’t hesitate to order from Portenzo again.

I love the black 23 1/2! I think that my next Portenzo will be quite expensive!

I received my new case after the fedex damage and I couldn't be happier! The replacement case is actually better than the original and Scott was very helpful! The finish on it is much better, I think they sorted out the issue with cases missing a finishing step in the process. Everything is smoother and cleaner just the way it should be. I don't think that I will have to do much other than my double sided tape mod:)

What is the double sided tape mod, you ask? I added some 3M double sided tape in 4 spots beneath the iPad to bring the iPad up flush with the edge of the frame. Of course, power button won't work this way but I don't use it anyway. Without tape it would be difficult to make the iPad flush without pushing the limits of the bumpers.

The result is a uniform surface and a very secure hold on the iPad. I love it!

romad1 - thanks for the doubled sided tape mod idea, I'm going to try it tomorrow. Does it pass the shake test?

Having extensively used foam, VHB and exterior two sided tapes in the marine industry, I would choose another medium to elevate the case. All the tapes are not going to come off easily, if you want to make modifications. A few layers of felt underneath the case should get the effect you want without marring the case or the pad...

Perfect advice, thank you. After reading romad1's post again it does sound like he was going to use the double sided tape directly on his iPad. I think you're right in saying that it would not come off easily. I plan on liberating my iPad from its case on occasion and the double stick would cause a serious problem. I found some felt leftover from my kid's Halloween costume and put a 1/2 inch bit by each corner except the obe by the sound chamber which already seems to sit a little higher from the insert. I also put a small single-ply strip along the inner frame along the sides. The added felt cuts the gap down by over half to maybe 1/8 inch and the corners still hold the iPad during a shake test. Any more elevation and it pops out. It may not be totally flush but it looks and feels better and the volume/lock buttons are easier to access, also the on/off squeeze still works. Thanks again!

I have been using this tape for mounting things to smooth surfaces for a while now and there is no marring when I take it off. But you are right, this is a semi-permanent mod, not for people who either need to remove their iPad regularly or access the power button as the bond is strong enough to be annoying. I have no need to do any of that, the only time that I plan on taking my iPad out is if it or the case breaks which is not going to be a common occurrence.

I thought about using a non-stick spacer like you talked about but I didn't like how close the iPad came to the edge of the bumpers. This way I don't have to worry about the security of the grip on the iPad.

Not for everyone

Problem editing original

...but it works great for me.

During fit testing I left one side of the protective plastic on so it wouldn't stick to the iPad during testing. It took a couple tries to get the thickness right so this helped a lot. Or like you said, removing it would have been a pain each time.

:D Definitely passes, probably a little too well for your needs.

I was thinking that another good material would be the rubber liners used in tool trays (the thin ones not the thick foam). You could use a little glue to secure it to the case so it doesn't fall out when removing the iPad.

Disclaimer on the double sided tape mod:

Using 1" squares is way too much, would recommend 1/2" or less. I was able to remove the iPad but with much more pressure than I was comfortable with, on both the iPad and the case. All is good though, back to the mad scientist lab...

Ok guys, I know I promised a review a few days ago but it took some time ..and here it is! -

Portenzo -

The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly: An Honest Review

...But not in that order. I'm actually going to do it in reverse. So this is my review of Portenzo.
The company as a whole, customer service, my personal experience, and of course finally - the case.

Summary at the bottom for those who aren't interested in the full review.

I hope you enjoy it. It's pretty interesting!

The Ugly:

Company -

- It took 50 days to receive my case. This also translates into a little over 7 weeks.
(When I ordered, not only did the website say 3-4 weeks, but Darin himself confirmed in a
private email to me that I would have the case in my hands in no longer than 4 weeks.)

- I STILL would not have my case if I hadn't threatened legal action. That's right, you heard me. I had to threaten Portenzo that I would file a claim with my credit card company and contact my lawyer if they didn't get their you-know-what's working on my case.

- Relating to the last comment, I checked with them Wednesday, June 1st on the status of my case. In the morning, they told me it still wasn't even in production yet. They hadn't even begun working on it. After threatening legal action for essentially taking my money without even building my product (fraud)... they mysteriously changed their minds a couple hours later, and told me my case actually WAS in production.. and it would ship out the same day, or the next day.
(This tells me... these cases do NOT take 50+ days to make.... very ugly.)

Case -

- There is absolutely nothing ugly about the case itself. It's very well made. I noticed some posting with wood-problems and other things, so maybe I got a good one - but it's very nice.

The Bad:

Company -

- Portenzo waited EXACTLY one month, and then charged my credit card for the case. Obviously if you read above, charging me did not translate into shipment of my case, or even the building of it. They only have a certain window of time without having to ask customers again to verify, which we all know and it's somewhat understandable, but essentially they are taking people's money without even building their cases for a very, very long time, which was confirmed to me in an email. This could be very, very bad if something happened to the company.. and they already spent YOUR money on supplies.

- While emails were always replied to extremely quickly, some of them were automated responses which essentially told me nothing I really needed to know.

- Portenzo refused to give any sort of percentage off, coupon, discount, or other such compensation for the double-length wait time I and many others have had/have to endure.

Case -

- My case came with the new secret power button thingy. The bad thing about this, is it didn't work at all when I first put the iPad in the case. It does work now, but you have to have the iPad in the case JUST RIGHT. Even then, I have to press down on the iPad pretty damn hard for it to work.. harder than I'm comfortable with.

- The headphone port might be too little for some people. Personally I use Audio Technica ATH-M50's and the headphone jack just barely fits. This might be an issue for some people.

- The binding is stiff, but I could see where over a period of time it would become looser if you don't "baby" it. Good thing I "baby" my stuff.

- The case adds a lot more weight to the iPad than I imagined, especially after reading people saying it's so light. It's light, but not /that/ light. Personally this isn't a problem for me, but it definitely makes it feel heavier... similar to a thin hardback book.

- The camera hole doesn't line up perfectly center. For some people this might be a problem, it doesn't affect the camera in any way, and isn't a problem for me personally, but I know how anal some people can be.

- The only other thing worth mentioning is I wish I would have gotten the magna-grip AND the strap because the top /does/ shift slightly. I'm hoping over time it doesn't get any looser. Otherwise this case doesn't exactly have many flaws and the ones it has aren't very big issues.

- The case stands in landscape mode perfectly fine most of the time - on very slick surfaces it will need the strap to stand up.

- During my first "shake" test, the iPad fell out. It would seem you need to get the iPad in the case "just right". Once you do, it ain't going anywhere.

The Good:

Company -

- Portenzo always responded to my email's in a very timely manner. Even more so than any big company I think I've ever dealt with. I think the longest waiting period I had for an email was 1 and a half days, and usually they responded same-day or even within a few hours. So the customer service in this regard was superb. If only they kept their promises they made, in those emails...

Case -

- The case is extremely well made. It fits together perfectly. The corners are perfect, the wood is unbelievably smooth and darker than the pics on the website (which is a good thing, it looks very classy this way.) The faux morocco leather feels very soft and nice to handle, but also feels like it would be pretty durable.

- The interior came perfect, the lining is very nice, and I wasn't missing any foam or anything.

- The soundport works very well. It's similar to cupping your hand around it, but you no longer have to do that - and personally I thought it sounded better than cupping the hand. Most likely due to the materials and wood, and a specific shape... rather than your soft hand. But it works well and that is what counts. Honestly it's probably one of the most important features to me. I can't see myself with a case that didn't have this.

- The camera hole is very well made. Not completely even but not a deal breaker for me. Smooth, unobtrusive. Personally I forgot I even had it, it was so unnoticeable. The strap covers it very well. Not completely, but very well.

- The spine is stiff and holds the case up very well whether it's in "typing" mode or even portrait mode. However, it is not stiff enough you can't fold it back. Very smooth.

- The case has a great typing angle (albeit I wish it was slightly higher), stands in portrait mode wonderfully and sturdy, and it stands very well in landscape mode as well (especially when using the strap)

- The strap actually keeps the case closed securely, which I was personally a little concerned about - but it works great.

- After you get the iPad in the case "just right" or it "settles in".. it ain't going anywhere, not even with profuse shaking.

- The on/off on open/close works just as it should. Very very handy.

Summary:

Company -

Portenzo is a good company who falls short on their customer service and promises because their cases are SO good that they are extremely swamped. You can expect them to email you back in a prompt manner, but it won't mean much in the end. Be prepared to wait 2 months or longer to get one of these cases. Aside from the false promises and long wait times solely caused by the extreme number of orders they have gotten side-swiped by, the company lives up to everything you'd expect out of it. They just need to hire more workers and make less promises.

Case -

The case is a work of art. Nothing else can compare. The wood is extremely smooth and beautiful, I'd even say it seems pretty durable and hard. It's darker than the photo's, but that only makes it look classier. The morocco faux leather is great, smooth but seems like it will offer good protection. The sound port is brilliant and I probably won't order another case without one. The spine is stiff but smooth, hard to explain. It supports it well but doesn't feel tough to maneuver at all.

Overall -

Overall the case is brilliant and my experience with Portenzo was so-so. The emailing and communication was for the most part, superb, but the false promises and waiting time was frankly asinine. It's understandable. But asinine. If Portenzo would simply promise less and deliver more (i.e. promise 8-9 weeks, deliver in 6 or 7), that would make their company unbeatable. Do not get me wrong; their cases
in the "moleskine/notebook" category, are, unbeatable. It just depends if you want to wait 2+ months to get one.

And now.... PICTURES! Which don't do the case justice, as everyone says - but it's true. You gotta see it in person. The color of the wood is pretty accurate in these pics, though.

If anyone has any questions, or wants more pictures just ask! Hope you enjoyed my review!

ROTFL. If you contacted any attorney regarding your order with Portenzo you would have been laughed out of his office. Furthermore why should Portenzo give you a discount when everyone has waited for their case?

You are incredibly naive.

Hmm, well that's fine. I guess where I come from, taking someone's money and not providing a product (or even working on it) is called fraud, but it's a moot point because obviously I didn't contact a lawyer, did I? The point is, it took that much to get them to ship my case which is pretty ugly.

Damn the fanboy's always surface when you say one bad thing. Oh well I got my case and I'm happy with it, don't be mad because you have to keep waiting and I got **** done. It worked didn't it?

Of course it did not work. Portenzo simply laughed at your threats, as they should. Your case arrived in the same time frame as everyone else's case.
