I have used portrait mode on many subjects and it has never failed to work.
Can you not see egdes from many sides being blured?
[doublepost=1541263883][/doublepost]
I think what the opp is referring to is the bit on the left most red pointy leaf where the edge is blurred.
But only a pixel peeper would notice.
Pixel peeper? We are not talking one pixel, we are talking hubdreds of them. Maybe I have high expectations and this is a portrait mode for the masses, just like mcDonald is also a food. In any case, this is my photography: www.dylikowski.com

You have some nice stuff on there.
I like the landscape stuff especially.

Yes the edges are blurred. But I don’t think that makes portrait mode a joke. Just means it isn’t perfect. I think like all photography equipment, it will do a job. But it won’t replace a DSLR for a pro. It will be good enough for the masses though. And you would only imagine it getting better.

Of course I can. What do you expect. This edge blur is a result of how the iPhone does portrait mode.

It might be you that does not understand. The iPhone is not a DSLR but the iPhone is with people all the time. We do not need lectures from a photographer, I made my living doing it long ago. The average person will not even see the blurred edges that seem to upset you.

You should move on if you can not accept it.

I agree.

99% of the users of this portrait mode would not even notice. It also saves them the cost of a DSLR and lenses.

The phographic equipment makers have been rolled over and near destroyed by cameras in phones. I used to visit photographic forums all the time, they are ghost towns now with a shrinking membership. The OP is likely a member.

In the end the camera phones won as they are on the user all the time. I do not even carry a point and shoot in my glove box anymore. What Apple has done with portrait mode will WOW most users and that is the audience Apple is aiming for.

I can see where the OP is coming from, I have used portrait mode on my Xs quite a bit and tbh it can be hit or miss, some pics are ok, others are not very good and some have been superb, I think Apple need to work on the edge detection a little more.

I’m my opinion normal camera mode with smart hdr is where these phones really shine, the smart hdr is awesome in every way, it captures images so true to life, no blown out or over exposed parts, it really is great.

Portrait mode is useful too though, it depends what your taking a photo of, I have taken quite a few of people and it’s been amazing, I have also taken some random shots of objects and some have been good, others not so great, but it’s a phone, I really don’t expect miricles from it, I’m happy with what it can do.

Adam.

I assume photography is not your strongest area? Of interested, I can explain what creates bokeh:)
[doublepost=1541260528][/doublepost]
In a small size, yes, but if you see full picture, it is clear the bokeh is fake.

Please do. No, photography is not my expertise and I thought I made that clear. As I said, I have used my wife’s DSLR enough that when I want that effect I use a close up subject so distance images are blurred. I can’t remember a situation in which a telephoto lens worked in a situation for me but then I’m only photographing my daughters and dog. I usually use my wife’s 50mm lens or another one that’s a bit bigger (can’t remember what it is).

It’s a phone with a camera. For the average and some above average consumers it’s perfectly fine. If you are a true photographer I don’t think you would be using a phone camera for your work. For many non professional situations it’s more than acceptable.

Side note: Good thing proofreading isn’t your profession.

Actually it’s definitely noticeable even without pixel peeping.

And that is your choice. Just another pixel peeper who thinks all need to be perfect to make everyone happy.

The only joke here is photographers comparing their meager DSLR equipment to a camera phone!
A picture that has a subject with poorly blured edges and a fake bokey is really a bad taste. I tried several scenarios and it os not usable. But like I said, McDonald is considered food by many people. Apple knows what they are doing, a product for masses. Do not call people pixel peepers of they can appreciate and see things that are irrelevant for you

You can’t expect a phone to take the same types of pics that a DSLR would. It’s fine for pics of the cats and birthday snaps but that’s about it.

Since the iPhone 6S or so some blogs will spit out an article to decide whether the iPhone is finally better than a $1000 DSLR, when it isn't - and never will be (if it were then what's the point of the DSLR????)

I think portrait mode is meant and looks best when one takes portraits (of people). Its an algorithm looking for people’s features, you’re shooting rocks.

Only a pixel peeper? It’s very obvious on my 8+ in the thumbnail.

It’s amazing how many people don’t want to understand what the OP is saying. He is not comparing the iPhone camera with that of a DSLR. He talks about the software filter that is applied to the photo. Which indeed fails.

Well said. And that’s exactly what it is, it’s detecting the presence of someone else based on facial detection/expressions, if there is any movement, ect and obviously once the sensor finalizes the correct lighting and distance, (And based on the other variables mentioned), then the photo is finalized.
