this will maybe be a stretch for one handed use

It may be a stretch, but how many times do you need to only use one hand?

Now... How many times you can only use one hand are you driving or doing something else that should have your attention versus your phone?

----------

I hope that it doesn't have the curved glass. These are terrible.

Samsung did this on the Galaxy S3 and switched back to flat on the S4 and S5.

It is impossible to have a screen protector that looks decent. Even protectors with curved edges just aren't the same.:(

Apple doesn't believe in screen protectors... That's why they invest in fancy sapphire screens.

You insult Johnny Ives. He goes bald, your phone should too!

The whole point of quartzglass and gorilla Glass are to make screen protectors obsolete. My iPhone 5 hasn´t had a screen protector and it doesnt have a scratch after numerous drops and attempted scratches by keys in my pockets.

With the quality of current display panels there is no need anymore for screen protectors.

I'm split.. My 3GS has the same screen protector on it from 3.5 years ago. And I use it just fine. I tore the protector off my iPad 2 after two months and it's been two more years. I like the feel of the screen without the protector.. But I keep the Apple Smart Cover on my iPad at all times and the iPad inside a zipper sleeve, so the surface is covered unless I'm touching it. The phone gets tossed all manner of places with keys and coins.

Oh I thought the 3.5" screen was the perfect size Steve Jobs?

Oh that's right you're dead.

Steve would have never allowed this.

Can't wait for these new phones!

Dude Steve is dead and stop thinking as he died is nonsense... The life continue and technology also.... Maybe Siri allows you to do everything using one finger on 10" screen size...

If you not happy then please stick to the past with a 4S and voila... Every time there is a change people complains, then get used to it and finally cannot immagine how it was before...

Like iPhone 5 and ligthning connector... Omg need to change everything... It will not fit my expensive docking...

Finally what? All got a 5 or 5S and those who don't will probably go for a iPhone 6...

So please let Steve rest in his glorious era but world has evolved as the technologies so will you get on the technology train or stay in your past century???

Looking forward to once again owning an iPhone with comfortable, rounded edges. It's been too long for me—the trusty 3GS.

As for the size comparison, I'm really thinking the 4.7" is the size for me. Looks perfect for my hands. But people like my wife refuse to upgrade to something bigger. She gets angry any time I mention the iPhone 6 being larger. Honestly she even misses the 3.5" form factor. Hopefully Apple keeps around a 4" plastic model that uses year old tech for $99. So next year there would be a 6C with an A8 but 4" screen. My wife doesn't care much about specs—she just wants it to keep working with the new software. She's also more of a 3-4 year upgrade kinda gal. Considering the iPhone at 4" is one of the best selling phones of all time, I hope that Apple keeps that size around in some form.

I really never understood why people spend all this money on a gorgeous phone only to spend more money covering it up and life proofing it with crappy plastics. Why?.

Exactly! People buy a phone, put it in a case, then take it out of the case when it's time to upgrade, maybe commenting on how nice it still looks.

I'd rather have a phone that had a few bumps and bruises when it was time to get a new one - that way your new one looks even nicer, and you've had time to really enjoy the design that Apple put a lot of thought into.

But as long as they have an oleophobic coating you'll still see the scratches from the coating, hence the need for a screen protector.

You can just wipe on a new coat, if that really bothers you. Amazon has a kit for $25 that should be good for four re-coats.

Agreed!!

Nice to see the 4.7 inch version is only marginally larger than the 5s.
There was a group of us that TRIED to tell people that when these 4.7" rumors first started, but people didn't want to hear it. "Ohhhh, I'llll never buy a phone that big." "That thing won't fit in my pocket."

Bezel still too big

Well, this looks better than some of the earlier mock-ups. But, I still reckon the bezel is too big. As the phone size increases the home button is looking increasingly like a design flaw to me. Even when the tech would allow for a much smaller bezel (and therefore a smaller handset for a given screen size), the home button mandates a wide strip at the bottom and (for symmetry) a wide strip at the top. That is a lot of real estate wasted on one physical button.

But, that is never gonna change so it is what it is I guess...

When my left hand is busy with bags, how can i dial or answer a call??

This is just speculation, but I wonder if apple will alter the phone answer screen in ios 8 to accommodate the larger screen(s). It would make sense if they had the button extend across the whole bottom of the screen and if the phone was locked maybe a flick up gesture that is actionable from either side of the screen.

Maybe, but there really is no need for anything like that. Look, we're talking about 4.7 or 5.5 INCHES, not feet. The difference in display width between the current 4" and the rumored 5.5" is ~0.7". That's just over half an inch, and that is only if you would need to stretch out to the far side of the screen, which you don't. You only need to reach about halfway in to the screen to answer a call.

As for making a call, same thing. If you have really small hands and simply can't stretch the extra half an inch or so, just place the Phone app in the middle of the dock and you're all set.

And mind you, this is regarding the "OMG-it's-so-massive-it-won't-fit-any-pocket-or-hands"-5.5 incher. The 4.7" model will be a whopping 0.3" wider.

If they are sapphire, maybe you won't need a screen protector?

True.

However, the curved edges make me wonder if that screen is sapphire.

Carving and polishing such curves is an extra expense and risk of lower yields.

It would also be an incredible waste of material, since that would mean a thicker piece of sapphire just to allow for such edges.

Unless... somehow a thin layer of sapphire is embedded in the middle, and the core and its curved edges are still glass.

Aaaand I sit here with my iPhone 5s that has a couple of hairline scratches on the screen.

These arguments back and forth are silly, it's pretty obvious that yes, some of the screens *do* scratch. I'm interested to see whether the new sapphire design will limit them.

Yes, everyone understands that it is inches and not feet. It will still be a reach for some and if apple is going to release a 5.5 inch iphone then that will certainly be a reach for many people, even without small hands. Google negated the issue of vastly different screen sizes by having the answer button go all the way across the screen. Changing ios to accommodate the problems that might arise operating a large phone is just good design. I'm not saying that everything needs to be usable with one hand, I have been clamoring for larger iPhones for a while and it's specifically why I left ios and went with the LG nexus, but I can see the importance of doing some things, like answering calls, with one hand.
