Why? Just leave the battery alone. They finally made it good and now they're undoing it.
It’s important to point out other changes like the new Qualcomm X55, but I suspect it is a combination of these factors along with the new SoC process node, as well as further possible software tweaks. The SoC itself uses very little energy in terms of the whole iPhone package. So I doubt it has to do with 5nm.
For iPhone Pro that is kind of expected to have less space if they included the mmWave Antenna. I am not sure why they have lower battery size for 12. May have to do with OLED being efficient so they decided with a smaller one.
I am partly guessing the 14nm Intel Modem are so inefficient, using 7nm Qualcomm Modem actually brings more benefits.
Nobody knows if this is a matter of thinness or some new component taking place. Remember, it's rumored that we're getting a Lidar sensor and bigger lens of the cameras. This is one of those trends I will never understand. Most people value battery life over thinness, Apple.

Some people are in the upgrade program, others just wish to upgrade to the latest offering.
Oh no. I want good battery life. Android phones wipe the floor with iPhones when it comes to battery life.
Probably saves them 20 cent or some BS

This so much. They're not going to release a phone that has worse battery life than last years model. Just speculation but this might mean the new iPhone won't get millimeter wave 5G because from my understanding it's a battery hog. Either way IDC because 5G is no where near where I go.I'm assuming the battery life will be comparable to the previous generation they just improve software performance and component efficiencies
As stated in reply, it is likely a space thing not a cost thing. Going up or down 280mah (a few %) likely costs far far less than 20 cents.
5G "stuff" takes more room. Some of that is out of Apple's control dealing with Qualcomm for the time being until they get their own modems out
Franky, I dont care, as long as real world battery life is as good. Most people wont be on 5G all the time, the coverage isnt there yet anyway. I dont personally get the 5G hype. I never thought current 4G was slow.
Or Apple may say its normal battery life not on 5G is the same as the 11 series, but on 5G its x hours. That would be my guess and since most wont be on 5G all of the time it will be better than advertised.
But its all speculation. And we dont know if they are using x55 or rumored x60 and what those power differences are.
In the opposite world sure. Nearly ever real world battery test out there shows the 11 Max ahead of bigger battery Android devices.
You need to hit the weights. It's just a phone. At least there's a chance that they will get a bit lighter and/or thinner. The 11 Pro Max is a heavy boy.
I think the smaller phone will attract people to occasionally use their phone for calls, texts, and maybe an Instagram post. If you're not watching movies or on your phone for hours the smaller size is niceUnpopular opinion here but I'll be getting the 5.4in 12, and I'd rather a thinner/lighter device over the extended battery capacity. I previously had an XR and it was so damn thick and heavy. Then again I'm not one to be on my phone for many hours all day so I certainly see the merits for those that do. But this is welcome news to me.
And for someone like me who doesn't want to carry around a man purse just for a smartphone. I am still using the 1st Gen iPhone SE as anything else is just way too big. But for me the smaller size isn't defined by the thickness of a phone. It's the footprint that matters as it needs to fit comfortably in my pockets. In my opinion it can be even thicker than the iPhone 11 Pro, as long as it can do GPS navigation for a few hours, play my music and audiobooks to the AirPods Pro or to my Airplay devices and lets me stay connected to the internet via 4G and to my Apple Watch. I want more than just barely a day of battery life without much usage of GPS and internet. Right now I don't even reach half a day when I go hiking with GPS turned on. But that is of course with the tiny battery of the SE.I think the smaller phone will attract people to occasionally use their phone for calls, texts, and maybe an Instagram post. If you're not watching movies or on your phone for hours the smaller size is nice
It's a pity us consumers can't reap the benifits, too.Apple is reaping the benefits of the 5 nm process node.
This bodes well for A14 series chip performance. Bring on the new Arm Macs!
