i don't like the hard edges and it looks too thick to fit inside a 3g casing as stated it was found in.

Agreed. The story reads like an April Fools Joke. I don't believe a word of it, and the non functioning phone in the photo could be anything.

Ugh...

Why do all these 'leaked' photos have to look like they were taken in some dank dungeon, with no light, and motion blur?? It's a phone! It's just sitting there! Hold still and click.

Photo quality aside, I'm not sure if I hate this yet, but I bet I'll know by the time I'm done with breakfast. I do highly doubt the amazing backstory...:p

If the Chinese can make and release shi* like this -

The second of these use the Apple adaptor...

Then they can definitley make fake prototypes like the one on page 1 of this thread. Fake

I would much rather use my N97 than those clones.

There's no way that the device in those photos has had anything to do with Jonathon Ive.

Looks like another iPhone knock off to me.

K, so I found the SIM card slot finally, its on the side now, you can barely see it.

I think the pics are real. For all those thinking the side looks too thick or fake, I'll tell you it looks exactly like my iPad from the side.

But what concerns me is that the phone seems to have a miniSIM card, not the old sim card size. This also is like ipad 3g This is bad for many reasons including rendering old jail broken iphones running mywi useless if you get the new iPhone (can't just pop the new sim into the old phone when you want to tether). and maybe att asked apple for this as they will be the only one coming with these new sims so unlocking is thwarted mechanically.

Can anyone confirm that the sim seems smaller?

lol @ any self-proclaimed apple die-hard not realizing that that is a genuine prototype. What is wrong with some of you? Geeeeeeeez

I'll echo what a lot of people here have said...no chance in heck that this is the 4g/HD. That doesn't look like an Apple product at all.

I've also heard some people mentioning it could be a ploy from Apple to get a poll of thoughts on the design. Even if it was, they have no time to change the design now!

Not an iPhone

Come on people, get for real - this is NOT an Apple iPhone prototype much less an early 3GS? or 4G early production model for two essential reasons:

1) Apple's industrial security is infamous the tightest on the planet. Things like this are never allowed to exit the lab and there is no way in you know where that it made it to a barroom floor in San Jose.

2) As has been stated, the design is hideous and there is no way Apple would even make a prototype that looked this bad with its ugly seams thoroughly unApple buttons. It simply makes no sense that Apple would ever have something like this even as an early original iPhone prototype. This is a clumsy forgery, perhaps a knock-off attempt, perhaps purely a red herring but nothing more.

It it was real

If the pictures were real
I doubt that it is the final production. Apple may have a generic case system (iPhone Mold) for testing the equipment, making sure that the electronics can be installed in the form factor (when it goes into the assembly line). Also for beta testing the phone see what reception it gets and how it performs and fixes any bugs or glitches. Chances are the final version will not look like that. Unless Apple got tired of Unibody design and is going for more of a steam punk look to it.

Cracks in the shell

How many of you have had cracks in their case around the buttons on the side of the iPhone?

Would not be surprised if Apple had to come up with a solution, as this might eventually affect every iPhone they make.

It's great the iPad is all aluminum, but because of reception that's a no-go on the phone..

So maybe that's why the sides are now aluminum? And probably after the prototype phase it will all be baby smooth...

Hard to believe though that Apple would abandon the sleek rounded edges.... They must be able to come up with something better!

Fake or early prototype of an older gen iphone... Either way i don't think this has anything to do with the 4th gen iphone... Well, i hope not anyway, it's hideous! Just my opinion ;)

Mac made a lot of bad decisions lately: iPod XL, Flash hypocrisis, poor MBP update...

But switching from great design to poor/bad taste design is not one of them.

Leaking so easily prototypes of their most important upcoming product neither.

Damn, someone said the exact same thing as I did. This means it's sheer good sense that this thing is a fake why even argue ?

My $.02: Apple (or maybe just Ive) is currently into cuving the back up to meet the front -- but only on their mobile devices (iPhone and iPad). I think the idea is that the curve makes the device more comfortable to hold. Since the iPad has adopted that look, I would find it strange for Apple to suddenly abandon it and square everything off. I don't think they would do that for just a prototype, because that would completely change how the internals fit together.

Exactly. This is most likely a knock-off.

I'm not buying this (the pictures I mean). There's a very small chance what's inside could indeed be the new iPhone innards and the casing is just something concocted to throw people off, or this could be a prototype of sorts. But 80GB sounds like a HDD to me and that phone looks really thick, like an oversized Sony-Ericcson.

Why would an iPhone need 80GB?

I barely fill 8. And with Apple cloud coming soon, music and video will stream anyway, so less space needed.

Apps? 80GB? Cmon.
