if this iphone was a prototype or not, hope the next iphones comes in wifi or wifi+3G like the ipad so that the iphone will be global. My country doesn't support 3G yet so the iphone is still illegal and need to be unlocked !

Never going to happen.

Oh, come on! As if Apple would release a completely redesigned iPhone without a press conference.

you never know, this last month has been a roller coaster ride with apple, from the release of the iPad, to the sneak peak of iPhone OS4, to the release of i5/i7 MBP's, and the day after tomorrow is Apple's announcement for Q2 results or whatever they call it

The iPhone design team must have gone lazy, :p. Anyway, a question occurred to me. What if this is a controlled leak from Apple, to get an opinion from us about what we think about the new design?

interesting thought, maybe that way they'll keep dropping prototype iPhones in Cafes in California, until they reach the perfect design... :D
I'm in the mood of some latte from a local cafe *wink* who's with me?

My vision of the 4G :D

So lets get this straight, practically the whole line up up apple products now adopts some form of unibody construction but this picture, supposedly of one of its flagship products, shows it with loads of unsmooth lines and plastic panels. i dont believe this for a second it looks like a sony erricson i had back on 2005! put it this way, can you imagine Steve Jobs using this thing?

I actually also owned a Sony Ericsson in 2005, and was going to suggest that the phone in the pictures is a fake that was built partially from pieces of an old Sony Ericsson phone. The sides especially really seem to come from an old Sony Ericsson phone.

It's been verified by others on Twitter. Remote wiped devices, just by common sense, should be able to be turned on so, if possible and desired, they could be tracked.

The fact that it doesn't turn on and that Engadget is reporting what looks like an updated OS based on what these people said really makes me believe it's fake. If it's real they should post pictures of it turned on.

Not sure if this has been quoted yet as I haven't gotten through the whole thread yet...but from Apple's website:

Mobile Device Management
Deploying and managing large iPhone fleets will be even easier with iPhone OS 4. New Mobile Device Management APIs can be integrated with third-party solutions to wirelessly configure and update settings, monitor compliance with corporate policies, and even wipe or lock managed iPhone devices.

My vision of the 4G :D

:eek::eek::eek: That would be grand.

Personally, I don't believe the story for a second. As others have mentioned it seems highly unlikely that Apple would entrust an item such as the new iPhone in the hands of someone who is not even responsible enough to not leave it at a bar. Someones had a few too many drinks I think..

Something personal

Let me tell you something personal, THERE IS NO WAY APPLE LETS YOU HANDLE A PROTOTYPE, I've been there and all of them are screwed in to a special table, with special plastic security that will beep as soon as you past the door. And trust me, before you get to play with the prototype, you have to past the security 4 times, and in the room with you is at least two more people. therefore, I think this is a phone that wants to mimick Apple. :D

1) This design has surfaced twice from two independent sources. There is a small design change between the two.

The conclusion that this not a photoshop but an actual phone design that is being developed.

2) The layout of the phone is fundamentally the iPhone layout.

The conclusion is either a genuine Apple design, or a clone wanting to mirror Apple's layout.

3) There are some distinctly un-Apple like design-queues in this design. Relating particularly to the aluminum side. Panel-lines and so on.

Conclusion - Apple wants to go in this direction ...or...
This simply isn't the completed device. This is just a utilitarian engineering prototype for field testing. ...or...
Or it is just a naked chassis. The complete phone will ship with a rubberized "bumper" which will protect the phone from dropping and once fitted, restore the traditional iPhone shape.

How many "phone designs" do we have in Asia who don't mind putting the Apple logo on it? Dozens? Hundreds?

Engadget should know that very well for some time now. But they always need to sound important.

It's a possibility...

But very few clone makers use the Apple dock connector.

Very few clone makers make a glass screen with a circular button cut-out.
But more significantly....

*All* clone makers make products that are direct copies of existing Apple lines. They sell because people can pass them off as iPhones.

No one clones an iPhone and then significantly changes the design.

The clone theory does not hold a ton of water.
